Safe Lists
The following lists are Automatic Safe lists. They are not definitive and there might be exceptions therein, especially concerning Distributors. Generally, the presence of those on the lists in an actual creative capacity (that is, more than just a cameo or bit part. For instance, Bruce Campbell appearing in Spider-Man does not make Spider-Man safe) is enough to make a film safe. Got more? Post them and I'll update the list. Obviously, films not including these participants are safe, too. Update: I added several new names to the actors list. Some of these actors appeared in actual big budget Hollywood fare, but most of their career was in B-Movies, then obviously discard the Big Hollywood movies and just watch the B's (For example, William Shatner. Ignore Star Trek movies but anything else is fair game. Or Patrick Swazye. Ghost is probably not right, but most of his other films were B-Movies).

Re: List Thread 14th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2023

My previous Drive-in Challenge lists:

This Year's List:
Spoiler:
3/31/23

1) Slime City (1988) [tubi] - A thirty-something year old college student moves into an apartment in a building where an alchemist and his cult had killed themselves several years earlier. His odd new neighbors invite him over for supper where he dines on a small bowl of bright green "Himalayan yogurt," which he washes down with a champagne flute full of a strange, magical elixir. Soon his skin starts melting into sticky, orange slime and he starts killing people now and then.

1/1/23

2) Wonder World of Science: What's the Biggest Living Thing? (1987) - While visiting a zoo, Wonder Cat, the animated star of this Coronet series, asks the titular question, which the narrator proceeds to answer in his usual, convoluted fashion. / Wonder World of Science: What's the Brightest Star in the Sky? (1986) - The inquisitive cat asks another question, and receives another pedantic answer. / Wonder World of Science: Where Does the Rain Go After It Falls? (1987) - Yet another question answered. Lots of great time lapse photography in this one, plus it has that lyrically evocative title. / Wonder World of Science: Can I Sit on a Cloud? (1987) - Hey, all the cat's questions can't be winners. A lot of the information presented in this short was also covered in Where Does the Rain Go After It Falls?, but it also has some cool time lapse sequences, so it wasn't too bad. / Wonder World of Science: Where Do Lost Balloons Go? (1986) - While strolling through a park, the cartoon cat's balloon floats away. / Wonder World of Science: Why Do Spiders Spin Webs? - Wonder Cat sees a spider spinning a web, and does what he does. I had seen most of these before. / VD: Name Your Contacts (1968) - This Coronet short explains the importance of naming your sexual contacts to health authorities if you catch gonorrhea, while explaining that such information is kept confidential.
3) Kilink İstanbul'da (Killing in Istanbul) (1967) [Internet Archive] - A gang of evildoers resurrects Kilink, a super villain in a skeleton costume, who then kills a scientist for his secret formula, which Kilink plans to use to create a super weapon and take over the world. Later, an old wizard in a kilt appears before the dead scientist's son, and gives him the ability to transform into a masked, costumed superhero (generically called "Superhero" in the subtitles on this copy, but called Superman elsewhere) whenever he says a magic word, so he can get his vengeance and save the world from Kilink.
4) The Cavalier (1978) - An old man and his granddaughter show up in town offering the girl as a wife to any man who can beat her in a kung fu fight. After she defeats several opponents, a fugitive who happens by, unaware of the prize, fights her and wins, only to run off, with the authorities - and the old man and the girl - in pursuit.
5) Ghost Town Law (1942) [tubi] - In this Monogram "Rough Riders" western, Buck Jones and Tim McCoy bust up an outlaw gang who are using the old mining tunnels under a ghost town for a hideout. There are a few more films from this series on tubi, but I couldn't really get into this one, so I don't think I'll bother watching any more.
6) Gator (1976) [Pluto TV] - In this sequel to White Lightning, Gator McKlusky (Burt Reynolds) is recruited by the Feds to help bring down an old friend, crime boss Jerry Reed, to aid the Governor's chances in the upcoming Presidential election.
7) Probability Zero (Probabilità zero) (1969) [tubi] - After the Nazis recover a crashed Allied plane carrying an experimental radar system, Henry Silva leads a few misfits and criminals behind enemy lines to destroy it. Written by Dario Argento.

4/2/23

8) Major Rock (1999) [B-Movie TV] - When a helicopter carrying five centerfold models is shot down in Nicaragua, the government sends in Major Rock and his team to rescue them.
9) 200 Motels (1971) - Frank Zappa's mystifying musical comedy midnight movie, ostensibly about a rock band's peculiar experiences while on tour.
10) The Jackie Robinson Story (1950) - Jackie Robinson plays Jackie Robinson in The Jackie Robinson Story, a biographical film about baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Wow, this movie was way better than I expected it to be.
11) Viva Knievel! (1977) - Evel Knievel plays Evel Knievel in Viva Knievel!, a cash grab banking on the insane popularity of motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel. This one isn't a biography. It takes place in a hyper-stylized reality where Evel, friend and hero to orphans and nuns (and pretty much everyone else), is tricked by an old friend, and fellow motorcycle stuntman, Marjoe Gortner, into working for drug lord Leslie Nielsen (who really just wants to use Evel's fancy personalized trailer to haul a shitload of drugs out of Mexico), while Evel's geriatric, alcoholic, best friend and mechanic (Gene Kelly), who was also once a motorcycle stuntman, becomes reacquainted with his estranged preadolescent son. I had seen this one before (on cable, back in the '70s).

4/3/23

12) The Baron (1977) - An actor trying to direct his first movie finds out that his main investor took the $300,000 he invested from a gangster (Richard Lynch) who wants his money back, so now the director has to decide between making his movie or returning the money. His situation becomes more pressing when the investor dies, and the gangster comes to him looking for the cash. Not to be confused with Hollywood Man, released the previous year.
13) The Lost Day (Chronology) (2016) [OtherWorlds TV] - Byron, Shelley, Polidori, et al. are sitting around telling tales during a thunderstorm... then the actual movie starts. Two guys switch minds, six years apart, and try to convince their friends that they are no longer themselves.
14) Alien Domicile 2: Lot 24 (2018) [OtherWorlds TV] - A young woman takes her four friends to spend a weekend in her missing ufologist uncle's camper in an otherwise empty campground.
15) Wonder Walks: What Do They Eat? (1971) - Oddball Encyclopedia Britannica nature short has no narration, just a jaunty soundtrack playing over footage of various animals eating stuff. / Community Helpers: School Workers (1980) - Centron short giving short descriptions of the jobs of various school employees. / If You Knew How I Feel: Brad's Learning Disability (1982) - Unusual Centron short that seems to be aimed at making smart kids more accepting of learning disabled kids. / It's Up to Laurie (1979) - Laurie's parents don't want her going steady with Jimmy, so they tell her she has to stop seeing him. Well, of course, they start sneaking around, seeing each other anyway. Laurie invites him over while she babysits, things happen, and she ends up pregnant. When her parents find out, there's a big argument. Cut to earlier scene. This time the parents don't yell at her or forbid her from seeing him. Soon Laurie starts taking "the pill." Eventually the two kids break up. Cut to earlier scene again. Mom calmly talks to Laurie about Jimmy. This time around Laurie decides to wait until she's older to have sex because she doesn't want to get pregnant but she doesn't want to take "the pill" either. / Noontime Nonsense (1955) - Driver's Ed. short aims to teach teens not to go "joyriding" in the school parking lot.
16) Deadly Target (1994) [B-Movie TV] - In this silly, over-the-top '90s action flick, a kung fu cop (Gary Daniels) travels to Los Angeles to arrest an Asian drug lord and transport him back to Hong Kong.

4/4/23

17) Deadly Drifter (1982) - A surreal fever dream masquerading as a film. Peter Coyote is recruited by an oddball terrorist group (who get their orders from bowls of alphabet soup) to do... something. We watch him as he travels from New York to California, having nonsensical conversations with the people he encounters along the way.
18) Shen jian dong shan he (Thrilling Bloody Sword) (1981) [Internet Archive] - Wow. This was something else. Just as a queen is about to give birth to a child, a ball of flame from space flies into her, and she delivers a pulsating, bloody, flesh egg thing. The king takes one look at it and decides to get rid of it, so they place it into a basket and drop it in a river. The basket floats downstream, where it is found by seven dwarves who live in the forest. After a short discussion, the dwarves decide to eat it, so one of them cuts it open, only to discover a female baby inside, which they decide to raise as their child. Then things really start to get weird. A great and terrible mix of wuxia, fairy tales, sword & sorcery, and Three Stooges style slapstick comedy, flavored with amusingly bad special effects and "Engrish" subtitles.
19) The 2nd Best Secret Agent in the Whole Wide World (Licensed to Kill) (1965) - James Bond is busy elsewhere, so nondescript secret agent Charles Vine gets assigned to be a bodyguard, and London tour guide, for a visiting scientist in this low budget Bondsploitation flick.
20) Seven from Texas (Hour of Death, Antes llega la muerte) (1964) [Fawesome] - When a woman needs to travel to Laredo for life-saving surgery, her husband sells everything they own to pay for the surgery, and hires a disparate group of desperadoes to accompany them on the trip and protect them from hostile Indians. Unfortunately the plan goes awry when some of the "bodyguards" decide they want the money and some of them want the woman.
21) Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam'ın Oğlu (The Son of the Man who Saved the World, Turks in Space) (2006) [Internet Archive] - In this sequel to Turkish Star Wars, the son of the hero of the first film is an incompetent spaceship captain searching for a crew member he lost eight years earlier, while his evil twin brother (who was kidnapped and raised by the bad guy from the first film) is flying around in space, doing bad guy stuff.

4/5/23

22) UFO's Are Real (Flying Saucers Are Real!) (1979) [Roku Channel] - Exceedingly credulous documentary about Unidentified Flying Objects, with lots of UFO pictures and film footage, plus a few interviews. Basically it's I Want to Believe: The Movie. My Roku kept suggesting this or Faces of Death, and while I feel like I had seen this before, it wasn't checked on icheckmovies (maybe I'm thinking of a different UFO documentary), so I figured sure, why not?
23) The Force Beyond (1978) [Roku Channel] - A sort of catch-all "documentary" for just about every fringe belief popular in the '70s (e.g., UFOs, UFO abductions, bigfoot, Atlantis, psychic phenomena, and the Bermuda Triangle).
24) The Devastator (1986) - After a Vietnam vet is killed by a gang of violent pot growers, a few of his old comrades show up, and kill a bunch of people and blow up some shit. Directed by Cirio Santiago.
25) The Cat That Walked by Himself (1982) - A British animated adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling story. / Problems of Conservation: Soil (1969) - An Encyclopedia Britannica short about dirt. It was about as interesting as that description makes it sound. / How to Conduct a Meeting second edition 1979 (1979) - Illustrates what the title says. I believe I saw the first version of this fairly recently. The major differences were; this one is in color, the participants are dressed more casually (I think they wore suits in the original), it has a female narrator and a woman is running the meeting rather than men in those two roles. / Divorce (1981) - A maudlin, "soap opera-y" short about an estranged couple with three children. / Our Changing Way of Life: The Dairy Farmer (1965) - This Encyclopedia Britannica short explores modern "push button" dairy farming. I've seen a few dairy farming shorts, and they all seem to be pretty much the same (that, or I had seen this one before).

27) Demir Yumruk: Devler geliyor (Iron Fist: The Giants Are Coming) (1970) - Two villains, Zagof (a bald guy with a scar) and Fumancu (a transvestite in a wheelchair), are both after a dagger which is inscribed with the location of a lost uranium mine. Finally, near the movie's halfway point (almost as an afterthought), a masked hero (Iron Fist, I guess) shows up and doesn't do much (other than get caught and unmasked by one of the bad guys) before disappearing from the film altogether.
28) Der Teufel in Miss Jonas (The Devil in Miss Jonas) (1974) - A naked woman being whipped in front of three masked judges is sentenced to death and strapped to a guillotine. Then she goes to hell, where the devil tells her she isn't due until the next day, so he sends her back to earth for one last night. Directed by Erwin C. Dietrich.
29) Surfer Girls (1978) - An uneventful porn flick about two young women who go to the beach a couple of times. There is also a little bit of random surfing footage, if you're into that.

32) The Tobacco Problem: What Do You Think? (1972) - Encyclopedia Britannica short about smoking. Be prepared for a gross scene showing some nasty tumors growing on the backs of a few laboratory mice, some open heart surgery footage, and another scene with a scientist "deli slicing" a human lung for examination. On the plus side, there was a large theater marquee advertising Shaft behind one of the interviewees early in the short. / Daughters of Darkness (1975) - A writer moves to San Francisco and rents a room in a boarding house where all the other occupants are members of a satanic cult. Edited version with the hardcore scenes cut. / Instant Orgy (1967) - A group of women are having some sort of meeting, and someone spikes the punch bowl with the contents of a bottle labeled "Instant Orgy." He ends up working at Fred Williamson's high class security firm, and uses their studio connections to "borrow" wardrobe and familiar vehicles to aid with a murder investigation.
34) Incoming Freshmen (1979) - Innocent small town girl Jane begins her freshman year in a "big city" college. For a low-budget regional flick, they sure found a lot of women who didn't mind getting naked in front of the cameras. This is another movie I had seen before, around forty years ago.

4/8/23

So a wizard/astronomer sends his daughter to protect Jimmy from magical goofball, Mr. Fig, and to accompany him on a quest through a park in Florida to the end of the world (well, Coral Castle, at least), where he can restart time. Directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis.

45) 5ive Must Die (2017) [OtherWorlds TV] - Four archeology students and their professor are trapped in the basement of an abandoned building during a blizzard.
46) Alien Beasts (1991) - Well, that was decidedly different. Something about "enemy agents" and "an invasion from outer space by extra-dimensional beings." It was bad, yet somehow hard not to watch due to morbid curiosity.

4/11/23

47) Unashamed: A Romance (Unashamed) (1938) - A pretty, gold digger secretary has her sights set on her hypochondriac boss, so she convinces a "doctor" friend to prescribe a vacation at a nudist camp to cure the boss's imagined ills. Kilink gets his super weapon, and only the Flying Man (née Superhero) stands between him and world domination. Unfortunately, the final reel for this film is lost, but someone "reconstructed" it with stills and narration (plus a scene from the beginning of the next film in the series), so you aren't left hanging.
53) Pornography in Hollywood (1972) - Ostensibly a documentary about pornography, but really just an excuse to show naked people.

(You Must Be Joking) (1975) - A rapid-fire series of dirty joke skits (plus a couple of big musical numbers!), some funny, and some not so much (as one would expect). With Uschi Digard and a couple of other familiar faces. I noticed that Uschi Digard was listed twice in the end credits (which, I suppose, could've been intentional).

Kilink travels back to Turkey and kills one of the members of the other gang, and takes his place. The film continues in this vein, with Kilink battling the two gangs (while seducing the ladies). No superheroes in this one, but it does have a fun little jazzy Dragnet rip-off theme song playing over the opening credits.

104) Mutant Massacre (1991) [OtherWorlds TV] - More crap about "aliens" and "enemy agents" from the guy who made Alien Beasts (1991), which I watched earlier this month. Much of this appears to have been shot at the same time as that film (actually, I believe most of it is the same footage used in the other one), and it has the same irritatingly repetitious, "Tommy Two Times" narration. It may as well be the same movie. Okay, according to one of the reviews on Letterboxd, "both this and Mutant Massacre 2 are just recuts of Alien Beasts," so it is basically the same movie.

Gordon Murray), a vaquero returns home for his father's funeral only to find that the body has disappeared from the coffin. Meanwhile, a fishman in a nearby swamp attacks a couple of guys. The first one is killed, but the second one (the comic relief sidekick of the cowboy detective hero) escapes. Then the cowboy detective and his sidekick investigate to try to figure out what's going on.
117) Pray for Death (1985) - A man and his family move to America to open a restaurant. Unfortunately, gangsters have been using the old building he bought to hide stolen goods. When a crooked cop makes off with a stolen necklace, the crime boss sends his men to harass the restaurateur, unaware that he's actually a ninja.
118) The Spy in Black (1939) [The Monster Channel] - A U-Boat captain (Conrad Veidt) plots with a German spy to destroy the British fleet during WWI.

4/30/23

119) The Movie Orgy (1968) [Internet Archive] - A monumental potpourri of clips from old B-movies, TV shows, commercials, newsreels, educational and instructional films, cartoons, etc., usually juxtaposed for comedic effect. Edited by Joe Dante.
120) The Harlem Globetrotters (1951) [Youube] - A college kid quits school and joins the Harlem Globetrotters.

DVD unless otherwise noted

First half list
Spoiler:

March 31
01. The Devastator (1986)* BluRay
It's Vietnam vets versus evil, vicious pot growers with the fate of a small town at stake. Short, sweet, and action packed. 6/10
02. Dune Warriors (1991)* BluRay
Typical post apocalyptic stuff has a bunch of nasty guys with vehicles and guns wiping out small peaceful towns. Has a Seven Samurai vibe with a little too much plot at times. Some good action though. 5/10

April 01
03. Wild Guitar (1962)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A naive singer goes to Hollywood and hooks up with a cheating promoter who almost ruins his life. Good movie. Lead Arch Hall Jr. is very likable and I thought the songs were good. Low budget but mainstream since director Steckler wasn't able to change the script as much as he would have liked. 6/10
04. Mantis in Lace aka Lila (1968)*
An exotic dancer discovers that she really likes making love while tripping on LSD but she also freaks out and hacks her lovers to pieces. The tripping scenes are fun as are the two clueless police detectives but there is A LOT of topless dancing which is OK at first but really starts slowing things down. I get that showing boobs was the whole point of the movie but enough already. 4/10

April 02
05. Extras for Wild Guitar*
Interview with Arch Hall Jr. (36 min.), The Incredibly Strange Film Show S:1 E:2 with Ray Dennis Steckler (40 min.), and interview with Ray Dennis Steckler (45 min.). All were very interesting, especially Arch Hall Jr. who talked about his career and his father who was an actor and a B-movie maker.
06. The Choppers (1961)* Prime
Five teenagers strip cars that run out of gas on deserted roads to sell the parts to a junk dealer. Standard low budget JD story but the carnage at the end kicks it up a notch. 6/10
07. Eegah (1961)* Prime
A teenage girl almost hits a caveman while driving in the desert and later becomes the object of his lust. Pretty slow moving most of the time but there are few decent tunes. Not much else though. Reportedly made as a second feature to play with The Choppers. 3/10

April 03
08. Sweet Baby Charlie aka The Sadist (1963)* BluRay
A brutal psychotic and his child like girlfriend keep three school teachers captive in a junk yard. A good, tense movie with much of the credit going to future Oscar winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond although the directing is also decent and Arch Hall Jr. does a nice job as the lead. 7/10
09. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? (1964) (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A teen slacker is hypnotized by an evil gypsy fortune teller and is forced to commit murders. The first film Steckler directed his way - just making things up as he went along. It is entertaining though, in a low budget way, and the mix of Vegas and lounge style musical numbers with a teenage story line just kind of works. 6/10

April 04
10. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? commentary with Ray Dennis Steckler
OK commentary has plenty of info about the cast, crew, and locations but there is too much description of what we are seeing or are about to see.
11. Future Fear (1997)*
Maria Ford plays a soldier chasing a quirky and annoying scientist who wants to use animal/human fetuses he created to save the world from a terrible plague. Maria wants to let the fetuses come to term and not save the world. Meanwhile the crazed general who started the plague talks to nobody in particular. Maria Ford is the best part of this incoherent, unexciting mess but can't really save it. 3.5/10

April 05
12. Women's Prison Massacre (1983)*
Reporter Emmanuel is framed for drug dealing by a crooked DA and put into a women's prison where she suffers the typical indignities but it doesn't matter because the prison is taken over by four escaped male psycho-killers who make things even worse. Not your typical WIP movie. Full of bad decisions and poor planning by the authorities, a few moments are laugh out loud silly. 5.5/10
13. Caged Women aka Violence in a Women's Prison (1982)* On Women's Prison Massacre Set
The two wardens of a joint male/female prison begin to suspect that one of the women inmates is a crusading reporter. Made back to back with Women's Prison Massacre, they share most of the same cast, crew, sets and costumes. This is a slightly more traditional WIP movie with more nudity and sexual violence but also a bit more story than the other film. 5/10

April 06
14. Tomorrow's Children (1934)* BluRay
A doctor tries to help a young couple when the court orders the woman sterilized because the rest of her family are alcoholics or mentally or physically deformed. Pretty good. At first seems like a sober, balanced presentation of both sides of an issue but it's really on the pro-eugenics side. Even the doctor thinks it's fine in many situations and the resolution is not one that would apply to many cases. 5/10
15. Child Bride (1938)* BluRay
A school teacher tries to put an end to the practice of child marriage in an isolated back woods community. If you can get past the sensitive subject matter (an old guy lusting after a 12 year old girl) this is a top notch exploitation movie. Some of the acting is poor but the director and cinematographer did a good job especially in the midnight attempt to tar and feather the teacher. There is even a heroic little person moonshiner (Angelo Rossitto) who saves the day twice. 6.5/10
16. Love After Death aka Unsatisfied Love (1968)* BluRay
A virgin returns from the grave and peeps a lot until he finally gets laid after which he goes for revenge on the people who buried him alive. South American film very poorly dubbed by producer Charles Abrams who also added a lot of strip tease music. More nudity than plot which mostly doesn't make sense anyway. The nude scenes are decent but there is a lot of undressing going on. 5/10

April 07
17. The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful (1970)* (On Love After Death disc) BluRay
A politician almost certain to be elected to the Senate must face revelations about himself and other members of his household. Also produced by Charles Abrams this has a far more interesting plot and fewer but steamier sex scenes. There is also a rising level of kinkiness that helps make this an entertaining watch. 6/10
18. The Thrill Killers (1965)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A wandering serial killer and three other killers escaped from a mental institution terrorize Southern California. Well done for what it is. The acting is OK for the most part and there is some nice tension when the escapees first appear. There are a couple of longish chases at the end but they are always exciting and well filmed. 6.5/10

April 08
19. The Thrill Killers commentary with author Christopher Wayne Curry
OK commentary with some new info but not as much as I had hoped for. This was Curry's first commentary and it shows in spots. He's a little awkward or tentative at times and a lot of what he talks about I had already found out from other features and the liner notes. Still some interesting stuff especially about the Hypno-Vision gimmick added to the recut re-release.
20. The Laramie Kid (1935)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 10)
Tom Tyler plays a cowboy with a gambling problem who returns to his sweetheart but finds himself accused of a bank robbery which he didn't commit. More plot than action until the end which is pretty good. One of the most feisty and competent female leads I've seen in a B-western. 5.5/10
21. The Range Busters (1940)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 10)
Three cowboys go to a ranch to help out a friend only to find that he has been murdered by the mysterious Phantom. First of the Range Busters series staring "Crash" Corrigan, John King, and Max Terhune. Above average B-western has a real serial feel to it with a ghostly figure killing people, an abandoned mine used by the bad guys, and lot of good action. 6.5/10
22. Aligator (1980) BluRay
A baby alligator flushed down the toilet survives on carcasses pumped full of experimental hormone and grows really, really big. I saw this in the theater when it was first released and liked it a lot and I think it still holds up. Standard story with a good cast, OK effects for the most part including various bloody body parts, and well-paced directing. 7/10

April 09
23. Philo Vance's Gamble (1947)* YouTube
PI Vance investigates the murder of a shady gem dealer which was committed before his eyes. Good mystery with a solid B-movie cast in this PRC cheapie. 6/10
24. Top Cop (1990)* (Mill Creek Explosive Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
A slovenly cop from Little Rock who doesn't do things by the book takes on a drug czar who had his partner murdered. This is an awful movie. The plot is full of cliches, the dialog is often laughable, the acting is poor, and the action is mediocre. BUT this movie is hilarious and at least never boring. This really is so bad it's good which is why it gets a 4/10.
25. The Silencer (1992)* (Mill Creek Explosive Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
A female assassin comes out of retirement to take out key members of child pornography and slave ring. A creepy guy magically sees whatever she is doing on a video game console. Is he friend or foe? Who cares? Technically a better movie than Top Cop, this is just plain stupid. It's like a series of music videos strung together with interludes of a lame video game. It may be trying to be arty but it's boring and tedious. I couldn't wait for this to be over. 2/10
26. Savage (1996)* B-Movie TV
After two years, a man wakes up from a coma and develops extraordinary physical abilities along with a raging anger toward the owner of a virtual reality company. Actually pretty good. There has an interesting, if sometimes muddled, science fiction theme and the action, which predominates, is done well enough. 5/10

April 10
27. King Boxer aka Five Fingers of Death (1972) (Shawscope Volume One) BluRay
Classic Shaw Brothers' film about a young fighter who is sent away to get additional training so he cam compete in an important upcoming tournament and is opposed by a rival martial arts school. Good story and characters and excellent, sometimes bloody fights. 7.5/10

April 11
28. Bloodfist 2050 (2005)*
In order to find the murderer of his brother a man becomes a fighter in The Pit in a post apocalyptic Los Angeles. The final Bloodfist movie replaces the personable Don "The Dragon" Wilson with a likable Matt "The Champ" Mullins, also a martial arts champion. The story alternates pole dancing (which gets sleazier as the movie goes on) and fights with bits of plot thrown in occasionally. Directed by Cirio Santiago, the film starts with a clip from his film Dune Warriors which I saw earlier in the challenge. 5/10
29. The Bloody Escape (1974)*
Shaw Brothers movie about a bandit who doesn't like the more brutal approach of the new leader so he frees a captive and flees from the group. More plot and drama and a little less action than became typical but interesting in the fish-out-of-water feeling as the bandit tries to go straight. Also some interesting class distinctions crop up between the male and female leads. 6/10

April 12
30. Rat Pfink a boo boo (1966)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
Three thugs kidnap a rock musician's girlfriend and hold her for ransom. Two costumed do-gooders pursue the crooks. Starts out fairly serious and then halfway through switches to a Batman TV show spoof. There are rock and roll songs throughout the film. Having seen the film once before I dreaded the long, silly chase and fights in the second half. They didn't seem to drag on as much as I remembered, probably because the movie runs just over an hour. Knowing what was coming also made them more tolerable but not much fun. 3.5/10
31. Rat Pfink a boo boo commentary with film studies professor Aaron AuBuchon
Good commentary with some nice insights into Steckler and interesting info about star Ron Haydock and his friendship with Steckler. (This is also discussed in an interview with film maker Don Glut who knew both men.) The commentary sometimes has a very academic tone such as comparing Steckler's work with the French New Wave about which I know very little so hey, it could be.
32. Judgement of an Assassin (1977)*
A clan is accused of a sneak attack on another clan which killed many people. A trial is scheduled which will include representatives from other clans and be administered by a retired fighter but subterfuge is afoot. Very good Shaw brothers movie about the martial world with good fights and an interesting story that isn't too confusing once you get the clan loyalties figured out. Really enjoyed this one. 7/10

April 13
33. The Lemon Grove Kids! (1968)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
Three short kid friendly films which are tributes to The Bowery Boys. Better than I expected. Silly but not stupid. Not super funny but a pleasant watch. I thought the first two were much better than the third with the second one (involving an invasion from outer space) my favorite. 5/10
34. Bowery Buckeroos (1947)* (Warner Archive Collection The Bowery Boys Volume 2)
The boys head out west to find a lost goldmine and clear their pal Louie of a murder charge. I liked this better than the other two Bowery Boys' movies I've seen. The cowboy setting seemed to provide more variety in the comedy situations (avoided the one joke feeling I got from the other films) and even Leo Gorcey's malapropisms struck me as more clever. Still not laugh out loud funny but I did get a few chuckles out of this. 5.5/10
35. Alien from the Deep (1989)* (Sinister Cinema)
Antonio Margheriti directed movie about two environmentalists who sneak onto a corporate owned island where nuclear waste is supposed to be treated before disposal. Actually it's just being dumped into an active volcano! What could go wrong? Not what you expect when something from space crashes into a lake and spawns a bio-mechanical monster. The plot is a bit convoluted and doesn't always make sense but this is a fun movie. Charles Napier does his usual fine job as the crusty, ex-military head of security. 5/10

April 14
36. Scorpion (1986)* (Mill Creek Explosive Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
A US spy tries to unravel the intrigue behind an attack on a terrorist who is scheduled to testify before a government committee. Good action movie with a couple nice twists, standard characters, some exotic locations, and variable acting. 5.5/10
37. Tiger Claws II (1996)* (Tiger Claws 1-3) BluRay
Marks of the Tiger Claws technique are once again found on victims in New York and San Francisco so the cops that cracked the original case team up again. Once again Cynthia Rothrock is woefully underused. She only really gets into the action near the end of the story but it is worth the wait. Bolo Yeung has a more interesting role in this one which also has a touch of martial arts mysticism in the plot. 5.5/10
38. Do or Die (1991)* (Bullets, Bombs and Babes: The Films of Andy Sidaris)
US agents Donna and Nicole are targeted by a Japanese crime lord who sends a series of six teams of assassins to kill them. A slightly different plot but otherwise typical Andy Sidaris babes, gunplay, and explosions. There are quite a number of different types of vehicles and locations used along the way. 5/10

April 15
39. Tumbling Tumbleweeds (1935)* (Gene Autry Collection 7)
After an argument with his father causes Gene to leave home he returns five years later to find that his father has been murdered and Gene's former best friend on the run and accused of the crime. Above average B-western marks Gene Autry's first staring role in a feature film. Lots of action, a great cast, and good songs. There is no mystery for the viewer about who the really did it but that doesn't matter. 6/10
40. Tarzan's Magic Fountain (1949)* (Warner Archive The Tarzan Collection Starring Lex Barker)
Tarzan tries to protect the secret location of a lost city which has a fountain of youth. Lex's first Tarzan movie and he often looks puzzled as Jane and Cheeta do some of the mental heavy lifting. With Boy gone, Jane becomes the stubborn troublemaking catalyst that moves the plot along. The story is pretty good with fewer stock jungle shots than was usual and there are a couple of effective matte shots on the way to the city. 5.5/10
41. Santos vs Evil Brain (1961) (Enter Santo) BluRay
Santo and his black masked partner help the police battle a criminal scientist who is able to turn people into obedient robots. I'd seen this once before so I knew that Santo has a very different role here than in most of his later movies so I could just enjoy this for what it is - a solid mad scientist story with a crude but effective lab set and some good fights. 6/10
42. The Brain Eaters (1958) BluRay
Ultra cheap AIP flick about parasites that attach themselves to humans and control everything they do. Despite all the low budge issues (effects, score, script, acting) I still enjoy this movie. It's mostly played straight and does produce a sense of paranoia and menace. 5/10

April 16
43. London by Night (1937)* YouTube
An American newspaper man and his dog (the brains of the outfit) help a Scotland Yard inspector (a nice role for George Zucco) track down a serial killer. Good mystery even if I figured out the gist pretty early on and eventually the who. At least the police and the reporter are on friendly terms as opposed to the usual antagonism. 6/10
44. The Tough Ones (1976)* BluRay
A police detective who doesn't like to play by the rules is out to break up a crime syndicate. You're thrown into an ongoing investigation so it takes a while (for me at least) to get up to speed. There's enough story to tie the action scenes together which is all you need here. The action can be pretty violent at times and it's exciting and very entertaining. 7/10
45. Master of the World (1983)* BluRay
Italian caveman movie about two tribes who fight each other, some different folks, and some bears and wolves. Some parts are cool and some are rather gory but there are slow stretches with artistic shots of scenery or cave-people sitting around grunting at each other. The majority of dialog is grunting with a few made up words thrown in. It took me quite a while to figure out who was who and I don't think I ever got the whole story figured out. 4.5/10
46. Goodbye, 20th Century (1998)* BluRay
Macedonian (once part of Yugoslavia) film split into two main parts with a brief section in between. Part one is a typical post apocalyptic setup which gets very strange as it ends. The middle section is about a wedding ceremony in 1900 which goes bad. The third is set on New Year's Eve 1999 and is about a wake that also goes poorly. There is little direct connection between the parts except for one character and a few themes in common. Even though I really didn't get it all this movie was still engrossing. 6/10

April 17
47. Body Fever (1969)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A PI gets is hired to find a woman who, unbeknown to him, stole a shipment of heroin meant for a big time crime boss. Standard crime story with some Steckler touches. Nothing outrageous here but nothing outstanding either. 5/10
48. The Corpse Grinders (1971)*
Ted V. Mikels film about a cat food company adding ground up human corpse to its product resulting in house cats becoming people eaters. I was surprised that this was played so straight given the silly premise. A really bad business plan, off the wall characters, and low level acting don't hurt all that much. Some good looking women and the cool but cheesy grinding machine help make this very watchable. 5/10

April 18
49. The Proud Youth (1978)*
Shaw Brothers' movie about the relations between five virtuous mountain clans and some evil clans but things are not as clear cut as they seem. Very interesting story with a strong martial arts fantasy feel and many fast and furious fights some of which are excellent. The characters are all interesting, there are some good twists to the plot, and some of the settings are quite different from what we usually see. 8/10
50. Wild Ones on Wheels (1962)* Tubi
A gang (no motorcycles rather Jeeps and sports cars!) kidnap a newly released convict because they think he knows where $240,000 is located in the desert. Entertaining low budget crime drama with Francine York and Ray Dennis Steckler who was also cinematographer. Familiar plot (with a few little plot holes) but fairly well done with a great location for the finale at some kind of abandoned mine. Shot mostly in the desert. 5.5/10
51. Gun Girls (1957)* Tubi
Three teenage girls, at least one of which is on parole, buy some guns and try for a big score. Cautionary film about female JDs is slow moving. The girls are dim and dull, there are a couple of incoherent and dull lectures by a parole officer, and there is dull and unmoving death scene at the end. The best part of the movie is the sleazy, womanizing fence (played by Timothy Farrell) who the girls have to deal with. 4/10

April 19
52. Queen Kong (1976)* (Retromedia The Kong Collection)
The plot of King Kong with a different ending and the genders of most of the characters switched. A satire (I guess) of women's lib, Hollywood, and gender roles in the mid 1970's. Heavy handed at times and too many of the jokes are not funny and just plain stupid or silly I shouldn't have liked this but overall I thought it was amusing a lot of the time and tolerable all of the time. 5/10

April 20
53. Reefer Madness (1936) BluRay
The lives of a wholesome teenaged couple are ruined by exposure to the devil weed. I forgot how much fun this wildly insane movie is. 6.5/10
54. She Should'a Said No! (1949) BluRay
A hardworking young woman who is putting her younger brother through college falls under the influence of a uncaring drug pusher after her first reefer. Full of familiar B-move faces this isn't nearly as crazy or entertaining as Reefer Madness and is kind of slow moving and plodding at times. There is a nifty theremin tune they play when the weed kicks in. 4/10
55. The Cool and the Crazy (1958)* Tubi
A new student just out of reform school, gets a gang of JDs hooked on marijuana. Things go bad when his supply is cut off because he is also a user. Some silly stuff here like the amazing marijuana hangover the gang suffers the next day but the movie moves at a good pace. Directed by action ace William Witney. 5/10

April 21
56. Kill Squad (1982)* B-Movie TV
A Vietnam vet and business. paralyzed after a murder attempt, calls his old army squad together to try to find out what was behind the attack. The kind of movie where almost everyone knows martial arts but not a HonG Kong flick. Fights crop up every few minutes as the team tracks down an endless series of clues but for the most part are bland and unexciting. There are some hilarious scenes along with bad acting and poor writing. There is a nice funky score though. Despite all the flaws this wasn't a chore to watch. 4/10

April 22
57. The Devil's Sleep (1949)* BluRay
A judge and the police try to break a narcotics ring that has caused a huge jump in teenage crime. From the lurid painting behind the title to the dry and incoherent lectors about environment influencing criminal behavior and the safe medical use of uppers and downers this is a entertaining exposé. The acting is generally poor but once again Timothy Farrell does a good job as the scum behind the racket. 6/10
58. Sinthia: The Devil's Doll (1970)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A young women with daddy issues who killed her parents when she was a child and found them having sex is being treated by a shrink for nightmares. A bit of a stinker. Lots of bare boobs, naked groping, and general nudity with almost no plot and often incoherent dialogue. At one point it seems to be heading toward a satanic cult plot but no such luck. 3/10
59. Kong Island (1968) (Retromedia The Kong Collection)
Edited US version of Italian movie about a crazed scientist who can control gorillas by radio waves and wants to try it on humans so he can control the world. No Kong or island here but a jungle adventure featuring a lab in a cave, a lovely jungle girl with a faithful chimp companion, stock footage of jungle animals, and savage natives. Not bad. 5/10
60. Fists of Steel (1989)* B-Movie TV
A former boxer and special forces ace is called out of retirement to take down a really bad guy who just happened to brutally murder our hero's father. Former real life boxing champ Carlos Palomino is an appealing lead and the great Henry Silva is fun as the over the top villain. His female assassin assistant sports the most ridiculous Russian accent I ever heard. The end is kind of strange. 6/10

April 23
61. Candles at Nine (1944)* YouTube
A miserly and cranky old man takes an "accidental" tumble down the stairs and when his will is read it leaves all his wealth to someone the man's needy relatives never heard of before. OK but precious little time is actually spent on the mystery which has a vague and unsatisfying resolution. The heroine is a little annoying at times. 4.5/10
62. The Magic Sword (1962) BluRay
An orphaned prince raised by a sorceress challenges a powerful sorcerer to save the woman he loves. Directed by Bert I. Gordon with some of his most accomplished special effects. The story is a little weak at times and the ending is anticlimactic but the nifty sets along the way and good performances by Basil Rathbone and Estelle Winwood keep things interesting. 5/10
63. Son of Samson aka Maciste in the Valley of the Kings (196) BluRay
Maciste helps to free the Egyptians from the evil yoke of the invading Persians. Solid peplum with several good feats of strength and fights with some lions and crocodiles. Nice Egyptian feel and some impressive sets along with an evil queen completes the package. 6/10

April 24
64. Alligator II: The Mutation (1991)* BluRay
Another alligator grows really big in the sewers due to chemical waste and disrupts a carnival set up by a would be real estate baron. Vastly inferior sequel is just full of dumb stuff. The villain is lame with a stupid plan to start his empire. The script is full of cliches and the dialogue is often painful. Richard Lynch and Dee Wallace do their best but can't do much to help. There is some nice miniature work though, some of it from the first film. 4/10
65. Night of the Lepus (1972)
Human error with hormone injections results in hordes of giant, killer bunny rabbits rampaging through the American Southwest. It's been a while since I watched this so I forgot that there is actually some bloody scenes and just how convincing the giant rabbits look. There are way too many scenes of rabbits loping through miniature sets but otherwise a decent monster movie. 6/10
66. Gammera the Invincible (1966) BluRay
A giant, flying turtle terrorizes the world. US version of the first Gamera movie with some added scenes featuring only American actors, most of who do a pretty poor job. The scenes don't change the plot at all. Still fun to watch. 5/10
67. Blue Monkey aka Insect (1987)* BluRay
A small private hospital has to deal with an unknown fast spreading virus and two giant insects which are beginning to reproduce. This film is full of annoying things - overly cute children, an adorable alcoholic oldster, characters who have no point in the story, and many plot points that make no sense even within the logic of the film. Also while one of the giant bugs looks pretty cool, the one we see the most of is kind of crappy. 3.5/10

April 25
68. Picture Mommy Dead (1966)* BluRay
A teenage girl released from an institution three years after seeing her mother burned to death becomes a pawn for her parents and other adults trying to get a cut of her deceased mother's fortune. Well made thriller by Bert I. Gordon with a creepy finish shows he can do more than giant bugs and tiny people. His daughter Susan works well as the lead. 6.5/10
69. The Chooper aka Blood Shack (1971)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A retired horror actress inherits a ranch that has an old run down shack supposedly haunted by a deadly Indian spirit known as The Chooper. This is the longer version padded with rodeo footage made for theatrical release. Not a bad idea for a story but a pathetically low budget produces a bit of a snoozer. It still has some of the Steckler "charm" (The Chooper itself) but the opening credits are the best part. 4.5/10
70. The Chooper commentary with author Joe Bob Briggs
Amusing with some info on the various stars and of course a lot of the Joe Bob takes on what we're seeing.
71. Joshua (1976)* (Fred Williamson Signature Collection Vol. #3) BluRay
A cowboy pursues the men who murdered his mother and picks them off one by one. Fred Williamson looks great as a cowboy and some of the story takes place in snowy mountains which gives a different feel but the movie is slow moving and the very repetitive soundtrack gets really annoying at times. 4.5/10
72. Mr Mean (1977)* (Fred Williamson Signature Collection Vol. #3) BluRay
Fred stars as a mercenary who is hired by a Mafia don to kill another don who has embarrassed the organization. A little hard to follow at first due to some print damage and later due to a muddled script. Entertaining enough with some nice shots of Rome. 5/10

April 26
73. Van Nuys Blvd. (1979) (Mill Creek Explosive Cinema 12 Movie Collection)
A snall town teen gets fed up with his boring life (despite the naked girlfriend waiting in his trailer) and points his souped up van to Los Angeles so he can cruise on Van Nuys Blvd. where he finds nookie, friends and love. Pleasant teen comedy with some nudity and a lead who is a little bit of a dick at times. 5/10
74. The Cheerleaders (1973)* BluRay
A bunch of hot-to-trot high school cheerleaders will do anything to help the football team win the big game or for any other reason at all. OK, with a huge amount of nudity. The acting is poor and it does drag a little in spots but wait, there's more T and A just around the corner. 4.5/10
75. Rad (1986)* BluRay
A loval boy who is a fan of BMX racing has a chance to participate in a big race being held in his own town but has to contend with evil businessmen as well as corporate sponsored riders. VERY familiar plot with some seriously sappy parts but the bike tricks are amazing and I had a lot of fun watching this. 7/10
76. Surf II (1983)* BluRay
Surfers who want to compete in the big surfing contest must contend with zombies created by a brilliant nerdy science student who hates all surfers. An incredibly stupid movie (intentional) that gave me a few laughs and wasn't a chore to watch. 5/10

April 27
77. The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher (1979)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A strangler and a slasher are attracted to each other but no good comes of it. Some great shots of sleazy Hollywood street life at the time and Pierre Agostino is OK as the strangler. The basic idea was a good one but the execution is lacking with the same thing happening over and over again just with different victims. Mostly narration with little (dubbed) dialogue which also goes over the same stuff over and over. 4/10
78. A Smell of Honey, a Swallow of Brine (1966)* (SWV David F. Friedman Triple Feature)
Sandy may be the ultimate tease - she eggs her lovers on until she is down to just panties then backs off and accuses them of rape. This of course ruins several lives. Sandy is a nasty piece of business well played by star Stacey Walker. Lots of nudity of course and quite an ending. 5.5/10
79. A Sweet Sickness (1968)* (SWV David F. Friedman Triple Feature)
A young woman tries to become an actress in Hollywood without resorting the the casting couch but ultimately fails. Lots of nudity and several bizarre situations but slow moving and ultimately tiresome. 4/10
80. The Brick Dollhouse (1967)* (SWV David F. Friedman Triple Feature)
A detective investigate the murder of a young woman and has to listen to stories of the recent sexual exploits of the female roommates. Lots and lots of nudity and this time in living color! I was totally boobed out at this point and just didn't care. Perhaps the longest 55 minutes of my life. Just awful. 2/10
81. King Dinosaur (1955) (VCI 50's Sci-Fi Double Feature)
A new planet enters our solar system and a spaceship is quickly built so the US can claim the prize. Bert I. Gordon's first theatrical feature. The movie is kind of dumb (the new planet looks exactly like Earth for the most part), the effects are crude, and the characters, all scientists, are dim but I still kind of like this one. 4/10.

April 28
82. The Las Vegas Serial Killer (1986)* (The Incredibly Strange Films of Ray Dennis Steckler) BluRay
A strangler is released from prison due to a favorable psychiatric report and immediately goes on a rampage in Las Vegas. Many similarities to The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher (it's a sequel) but with more variety. Kept my interest better than the original 5/10
83. An American Hippie in Israel (1972)* BluRay
After spending several years in Europe a Vietnam vet goes to Israel looking for people to share his dreams of freedom and peace. Things don't work out too well. Interesting story if a bit predictable. When things go wrong it gets pretty intense. 6.5/10
84. The Cyclops (1957) BluRay
A woman recruits three men to help her search for her fiancee who disappeared in a remote region of Mexico three years ago. Early Bert I. Gordon film is almost a template for the later War of the Colossal Beast. The effects aren't as good but the story is more interesting than I remembered. 6/10
85. Daughter of Dr. Jekyll (1957)
When a young woman and her future husband ask her guardian for his blessing she discovers that she is the daughter of the infamous Dr. Jekyll and may have inherited a madness caused by his experiment. No surprises but director Edgar G. Ulmer is able to make this low budget film more than watchable. 6.5/10

April 29
86. The Boy and the Pirates (1960)* Prime
Bert I Gordon helmed kid's adventure movie about a boy who finds a genie in a bottle and wishes he could sail with pirate - he gets his wish. Ok movie with a bit of Gordon's size effects since the genie is always small enough to fit in the bottle. 5/10
87. Tormented (1960) Prime
More Bert I. Gordon in this ghost story about a jazz pianist who let's his former girlfriend die so she won't interfere with his upcoming marriage into a wealthy family. Supernatural and mundane problems follow. Good story with a few nice effects and one of my favorite B-movie guys, Richard Carlson, in the lead. 6/10
88. Double Face (1969)* BluRay
Klaus Kinski plays a man whose wife is killed in an auto accident but several events and people make him begin to think that she is not really dead. Marketed as both a giallo and a krimi depending on the country this doesn't have a high body count but is a nifty little mystery. 5.5/10
89. The Avenging Eagle (1978)*
Shaw Brothers film about a member of a group of assassins who begins to have second thoughts about his profession. Lots of fights and a straightforward but interesting story with good acting. 6/10
90. The Amazing Colossal Man (1957) VHS
After being caught in a plutonium explosion an army major starts getting very, very big. One of may favorite Bert I. Gordon movies still isn't on disk, at least in this country, as far as I know. 6.5/10

April 30
91. Kung Fu Trailers of Fury (2016)* BluRay
I was hesitant about watching two hours of kung fu trailers but this exceeded my expectations. Almost all of these were Chinese language trailers and almost all of them were great.
92. Necromancy (1972)* Prime 5.5/10
Bert I. Gordon directs and Orson Wells stars in this predictable story of witchcraft. Has the kind of ending that I really dislike but until then it was pretty good. 5.5/10
93. Attack of the Puppet People (1958) BluRay 6/10
94. War of the Colossal Beast (1958) BluRay 6/10
95. Earth vs the Spider aka The Spider (1958) BluRay 6/10

April 08
1. Carry On Don't Lose Your Head (1966)
A solid entry in the lowbrow British comedy series of Carry On films, this time set during the French Revolution.

Re: List Thread 14th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2023

"If it's a good picture, it's a Miracle"
2023

APRIL 1
1) SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (1978) * - Answer: "Kids today don't know the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. And when those who do see our film and hear us doing it, that will be the version they relate to and remember. Unfortunately, the Beatles will be secondary. You see, there is no such thing as the Beatles" - Robin Gibb. Question: What are quotes that did not age well?

2) THE APPLE - Time has been kind to wacky musical Biblical allegory. Ill conceived and embarrassing, but it works for this one.

APRIL 2
3) THE DENTIST * - Corbin Bernsen as titular character driven to madness by cheating wife in Brian Yuzna's campy thriller. SPFX mouths are a highlight.

4) BARBARELLA * - Cool special effects (Jane Fonda doesn't count, although she's cool too) enliven at times lackluster script in Roger Vadim's live action sci fi comic book. Never boring.

APRIL 3
5) COBRA * - Sylvester Stallone takes on nihilistic gang of sadists in very 80s action epic from the glory days of Cannon Films. Fast paced, violent and (unintentionally?) funny. This kind of rocks.

APRIL 4
6) THE LONG RIDERS * - Director Walter Hill goes full Peckinpah in violent story of James/Younger gang.

APRIL 5
7) GAS! OR...IT BECAME NECESSARY TO DESTROY THE WORLD IN ORDER TO SAVE IT * - Roger Corman's bizarre satire of life in America after a military snafu leaves everyone over 25 dead. The humor is pitch black, but astute. Corman's final film for AIP.

APRIL 7
ROMERO FEST
8) NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD - "That's important, isn't it? To be right, everybody else to be wrong."

9) DAWN OF THE DEAD - "It's ours. We took it."

10) DAY OF THE DEAD - "Well, what do you know? We are heroes after all. What a relief."

11) LAND OF THE DEAD - "Looks like God left the phone off the hook, huh baby?"

In an interview, author Tim Lucas had a nice quote when asked about the enduring appeal of George Romero's filmography. "His movies never stop telling us the truth."

APRIL 8
12) NIGHT OF THE LEPUS - Easter theme. Rabbits.

APRIL 9
13) CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD - Easter theme #2. Resurrected dead people.

14) THE DENTIST 2 * - Corbin Bernsen returns as crazed doctor assuming a new identity in a small town and desperately trying to keep it together. "Vertigo" reference is amusing.

15) CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA * - Charles B. Griffith's satirical script makes this Roger Corman quickie worth a look.

APRIL 10
16) BOG * - Amateurish but watchable tale of weird creature awakened from swamp bottom by dynamite fisherman (not that he's cool, he was using dynamite to kill the fish). Monster is barely seen, likely for good reason. Veteran cast seems to be trying but Aldo Ray doesn't wait until the cameras stop rolling to have a drink.

APRIL 11
17) POINT BREAK (1991) * - I love the idea of a surfer gang that robs banks to support their beach bum lifestyle. Too bad Keanu shows up to ruin the fun!

APRIL 12
18) OUR WINNING SEASON * - Good performances and direction from Joseph Rueben save otherwise standard story of teenage angst in the spring of 1967. Excellent for track and field fans.

APRIL 14
19) DEADLY FORCE * - Wings Hauser stars as pariah ex cop on the trail of a brutal, unpredictable serial killer. Although Hauser's Stoney Cooper (great name) can be a bit of an a-hole, even to allies and particularly his wife, he's always fun to watch. Easy to see why this one didn't spawn a franchise.

APRIL 15
20) I BURY THE LIVING * - Intriguing premise undermined by disappointing finale. Well acted and directed with great atmosphere.

21) THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION - Hicksploitation meets monster movie in unforgettable Wisconsin lensed epic.

APRIL 16
22) GAME OF DEATH * - Reworking of Bruce Lee's final unfinished film is surprisingly coherent if not entirely successful.

23) MOONSHINE COUNTY EXPRESS * - Entertaining New World Pictures backwoods potboiler. Great cast.

APRIL 17
24) THE CORPSE VANISHES * - A creepy castle, a dark and stormy night, secret passages, mad scientists, humongous hypodermics and Bela Lugosi make for a fun, if creaky evening.

APRIL 18
25) LISA * - Surprisingly bland story of precocious teen's inadvertent involvement with serial killer rapist. Coming from Gary (Vice Squad) Sherman, I was expecting something edgier and darker. More Lifetime than Ramrod.

APRIL 20
26) STEEL (1979) * - Lee Majors stars as traumatized steel worker brought in as foreman to finish job with impossible deadline and deal with evil types trying to stop him. Lensed at actual skyscraper construction site giving the film a vertigo inducting authenticity. Stuntman A.J. Bakunas died performing a fall when the airbag failed.

APRIL 21
27) THE NORSEMAN * - After leaving Boggy Creek and sundown dreading towns behind, writer/director Charles B. Pierce headed to the past to helm this would be epic tale of Vikings vs Native Americans in 11th century America. Lee Majors heads pretty good cast but low energy and budget make things tough going at times. Oil tanker in background of one scene adds character.

APRIL 22
28) EVIL DEAD RISE * - Uninspired fifth entry in beloved spaltstick series. A laborious setup harbingers vapid story that makes little use of new urban setting and repeats several bits from previous films with much less effectiveness. Bonkers at times, but not bonkers enough.

29) NAKED LUNCH - Probably works better as a David Cronenberg film than adaptation of William Burroughs novel. Trippy and darkly funny. Great performances.

APRIL 23
30) THE LAST CHASE - Cars are illegal in this Canadian dystopian sci-fi action flick. Lee Majors and Chris Makepeace star as rebellious citizens of a totalitarian America, on the run to California in the last car on the road. Fascists bring in retired fighter pilot Burgess Meredith to join the chase.

APRIL 24
31) THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE * - Mad scientist keeps wife's severed head alive while he peruses the local hotties looking for a suitable body. Weird.

APRIL 25
32) DICK TRACY MEETS GRUESOME * - Fourth and final film in RKO Films series. Fast paced and funny, with a great performance by Boris Karloff as Gruesome. Best line: "If I didn't know better I'd swear we were doing business with Boris Karloff!"

APRIL 26
33) THREE IN THE ATTIC * - A college lothario is found out by 3 women who do not take it well and hatch a devilish revenge scheme. They lock him in an attic and punish him with daily sex. Amazingly, it works. Wacky counter culture comedy from AIP.

APRIL 27
34) RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP * - More like peaceful protest on Sunset Strip. Good music but gets bogged down with family melodrama. Mimsy Farmer's freak out is a memorable highlight. And there is no riot!

APRIL 28
35) SPAWN OF THE SLITHIS * - Muck creature stalks Venice, California in eccentric low budget monster fest.

APRIL 29
36) THE LEMON GROVE KIDS MEET THE MONSTERS * - More mugging that a dark ally in Gotham City. At times seems a bit like a glorified home movie. Middle section is watchable.

37) METALSTORM: THE DESTRUCTION OF JARED-SYN IN 3D * - Not as good as director Charles Band's previous 3D epic "Parasite", but this "Road Warrior" riff is still wacky fun. Great 3D with a memorable one armed baddie. Ending seems to be setting up a sequel that never came.

38) COONSKIN *

39) WHISKEY MOUNTAIN * - Not bad "Deliverance" rip off from director William Grefe. Christopher George and Roberta Collins are good as two of the victimized city folk.

APRIL 30
40) THE HAUTING OF JULIA (FULL CIRCLE) - Stylish thriller with Mia Farrow as grieving mother starting a new life following he tragic death of young daughter. She becomes convinced she's being haunted by the ghost of a child, but the specter may not be who she expects. Well directed by Richard Loncraine with a chilling final image. Based on Peter Straub's novel.

41) HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD - The perfect and usual capper.

Re: List Thread 14th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2023

Title in BLACK = From my personal DVD / Blu Ray collection.
Title in RED = Seen on Youtube.
Title in BLUE = Seen at the movies during current theatrical run.
Title in GREEN = Seen on TV during regular broadcasting.
Title in ORANGE = Seen on free streaming channels (Plex, Tubi, etc.)
Title in PURPLE = Seen on HBO Max or Amazon Prime

April 1
1. La Mujer Murciélago (The Batwoman)
(1968) When she wrestles she wears a full bodysuit, but when she fights crime she wears a bikini. Awesome.

ANDY SIDARIS MARATHON!
April 2
3. Hard Ticket to Hawaii
(1987) Playboy Playmates Donna Speir and Hope Marie Carlton are two special agents that... well, the plot is a bit fuzzy. But there's boobs and a killer snake, so I'm satisfied.

April 3
4. Savage Beach
(1989) Donna Speir and Hope Marie Carlton are joined by more gorgeous babes that are topless at least once in the movie. More boobs and violence than in Hard Ticket to Hawaii.
5. Picasso Trigger (1988) Playboy Playmates Donna Speir and Hope Marie Carlton return!
6. Guns (1990) Donna Speir and new sidekick Roberta Vasquez (even though she had appeared as a different character in Picasso Trigger) plus more gorgeous babes go up against Erik Estrada who stars as a mob boss called Jack of Diamonds - I kid you not.

April 4
7. Do or Die
(1991) Donna Speir and Roberta Vasquez go up against mob boss Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi)! Erik Estrada returns but as a different character than in Guns.

April 5
8. Hard Hunted
(1993) Donna Speir and Roberta Vasquez on the trail of a nuclear trigger device hidden inside a jade Buddha, but who cares, the babes are buxom (and nude) and the action is aplenty.

April 6
9. Hard Hunted
(1993) Donna Speir and Roberta Vasquez return one last time in a sort-of sequel to Hard Hunted as it features the same villain - Kane played by R.J. Moore (Roger Moore's son) who in one scene plays homage to his father's 007 movies.

April 7
10. BMX Bandits
(1983) A teen Nicole Kidman is part of a trio of BMX riding kids who go up against some criminals. Lots of BMX bike riding and simple fun. Loved it.

April 8
11. Wonder Woman
(1974) Not the Lynda Carter nor Gal Gadot version of WW but a made for TV movie. A powerless Wonder Woman (as she was in the comics for a short time) goes against Ricardo Montalban. Cathie Lee Crosby plays Wonder Woman with elegance and charm. The movie is low budget to be sure, but taken for what it is it's enjoyable.

April 9
12. The Wind
(1986) The crystalline-eyed Meg Foster stars as an author who goes to the windy coast of Greece, there she encounters a killer. Pretty standard slasher film. Foster's luminous eyes are the star here.

April 10
13. Moonfall
(2022) The dialogue, the stupid story, the deplorable acting, the first movie in this challenge that I have not enjoyed.

April 11
14. Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylonia
(1964) Peter Lupus billed as Rock Stevens stars as Hercules. The gorgeous Helga Liné is the evil antagonist.
