Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 19th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)
I haven't ever watched a Joe Bob special. What does he do? Break in and out on "commercial" breaks and do skits or interviews like Elvira used to do? Or does he just do an intro and outro? Or commentary during the movie?
Just curious. I never have found him to be a very entertaining person in the few commentaries and interviews I have seen, so I haven't tried watching one of his shows or specials. I know people love him but he just never has done anything for me. Maybe I need to give one of his specials a chance. Any certain one you would recommend? I have AMC+ so I am assuming they have his old stuff for streaming as well.

Here's what I posted last year:
I guess as far as format goes he's closer to Elvira, minus the joke-a-minute schtick. I'm also an Elvira fan, but with Joe Bob he delves much deeper into analysis of the film and the people involved while mixing in some off the wall rants and occasional bits. It's almost like getting your own personal film school class each episode.

The Dark and the Wicked damn what a film! Nothing crazy, doesn't change the game, but a simple script with good actors and setting, turn off all the lights, shut down your phone and computer, and get lost in the farm. And it's shocking cause I disliked the other movies this guy has wrote and directed. But this clicked extremely well.

I was feeling a bit run down yesterday, and after Pearl, I just had to crash for the evening. I was planning on doing the Joe Bob thing, but I'll just catch it when it gets posted. Feeling a little less enthusiastic regarding the editing.

For those watching the subset films...One word of warning for The Amazing Mr. X...do not watch the Prime streaming version. It is obviously from an old DVD or even VHS transfer and the print is awful. Lots of scratches, tears, soundtrack hiss throughout, etc. I was disappointed to find that there are a lot better transfers of this out there. I feel like I wasted my time watching this great movie on Prime assuming they would have the best version on their service.

I like Joe Bob and he's one my husband will watch even though he's not a big horror fan. Maybe it's because of Darcy. lol. I don't like the fact that many of his shows are now minus the actual movie (i.e. Joe Bob only). I get that there are limits to the licensing rights on the films they air, but to me it's pointless to have just his commentary without the movie it relates to. I'm planning to watch Halloween when it's available on Amazon/AMC/Shudder. Sucks that the movie is a censored version.
Speaking of Amazon's AMC+/Shudder subscription -- has anyone else noticed that there are quite a few films that are on Shudder, and that appear on Amazon with a "subscribe to Shudder to get this free" banner even if you subscribe to AMC+/Shudder? You have to pay the regular rental fee for them. A few times, I've tried the "subscribe to Shutter" button to watch the film figuring I'd cancel that lone subscription quickly, but Amazon figures that out and immediately unsubscribes you from that Shudder alone if you are already subscribed to AMC+. It's freaking annoying. <rant over>
I've had a spell of decent viewing nights when my husband would sit through one or more movies with me. But tonight's gonna be rough. I have MEN BEHIND THE SUN, TOOLBOX MURDERS, and EBOLA SYNDROME on my watch list for Extreme night. I may be relegated to the bedroom, ya'll.

I hate I keep getting shadows, lights, glare, etc. in the pictures but the way they are set up and with the glass and recessed lighting in the room, it is impossible to take really quality pix.

Those Alex Ross prints are what were used for the Universal Monsters steelbook releases. I snagged a copy of The Mummy one from Big Lots for $5 - and got it solely for the art (something rare for me - and the other 6 never showed up there). I couldn't bring myself to get the others as they cost more than I was willing to pay to own the movies again no matter how much I like the cover art (I have 8 copies of some of them due to various upgrades/releases).

I saw an interesting one on Netflix: El Conde (spanish for The Count). It's a Chilean movie with the premise that the former dictator Pinochet was a vampire, faked his death, and is biding his time in hiding while his loved ones bicker and scheme against him. Parts of it are very striking and artfully done, and the violence is pretty intense at times. Though I'm sure the movie would have a lot more meaning if I was more familiar with Chilean history. I did find the middle third of the movie sagged badly for me (things got very talky). Though I loved how things developed for the end with the reveal of the narrator (major spoiler, but it might be the kind of thing that would get you to watch):

Miranda Veil, about a woman who is killed by a serial killer repeatedly only to discover that she somehow cannot die was a refreshing film - I almost turned it off because it seemed 'too indie' and cliche but glad I didn't because it ends up being a very unusual film that I ended up enjoying much more than I expected. It ends up being a strange sort of aimless buddy comedy that wasn't afraid to be weird; however it's the sort of film I can tell might not strike everyone as being as amusing as it felt to me because of the unusual and weird of it.
It doesn't seem widely available but someone posted it on YouTube:

It is coming.
Movie release order my friend!
Miles better. I wish I had watched that one. It would be good to just take Prime off the list of options entirely for that movie.

The friend who came over last night was having a shitty day, so we decided to focus on comedies. For the theme, we watched Night of the Living Deb. I found it really annoying in the beginning. The comedy seemed way too much, but it sort of won me over by the end. I'm not saying it was great but watchable. I much preferred Spree, which we watched next. Joe Keery gives a great performance as an awkward loser who wants to be a social media influencer. It's not a perfect film, but I really liked it.

Put on Cujo as some background noise as I got a little work done. Not a big fan of the movie (shocked it has not been remade, though) but has a good story and some fun scenes. The kids I am babysitting for the next 6-7 days were on their tablets and then did homework. Middle of the movie they actually all of a sudden started watching and got into it which surprised me. Hopefully a good sign of things to come to turn them onto other movies that they will reach this week. Also love their commentary as they yell at the TV and tell the actors what to do LOL

I love Cujo.
It scared me as a kid when put myself in the kid's place.
Then when I watched it as a parent it scared me even more. I find it a tough watch but only because as it totally freaks me out as a parent. Dee Wallace, that kid and the dog all deserved Oscars for that movie.
Read the book. There is a whole cereal (yes, breakfast cereal) subplot that is almost as scary as the damn dog.

Yeah, those sucked. I mistakenly bought a few DVDs of those during their sales. If I'm not mistaken, they would also edit anything that was unrated, which just meant it wasn't submitted to the MPAA. So something that might have been given a PG-13 could've been edited for content by them.
