I"m just chugging along. Nothing really is standing out at this point, but I did watch one of the Inner Sanctum movies, Pillow of Death (1945) yesterday. Love that title, and I had a bit of fun with it. I'll be opening that Browning Criterion set this weekend.
I received the Arrow Video Store re-release yesterday, and I may dig into that one.

I checked out John Carpenter's episode of Suburban Screams last night. Competently made, but nothing very interesting. Someone's Watching Me, Eyes of Laura Mars, this, parts of Halloween, his student film, Captain Voyeur...
I would really love to pick his brain in regards to POV, privacy, stalking, et cetera, and why he's drawn to that. It seems like a major interest of his. Does anyone have an interview where he talks about that?

I too have seen a couple episodes of Suburban Screams last week. The first one was a typical haunting, though I enjoy those types anyway. The one about the serial killer didn’t really jump out at me. I was kind of disappointed in the show, since John Carpenter was involved.

Now that I've had a chance to sleep on the events of last night, I wanted to more firmly affirm my recommendation of When Evil Lurks, but I do think I'll end up liking it even more when I'm able to watch a subtitled version. And then I really didn't mention anything about Saw X. It was surprisingly decent, and this is coming from someone who wouldn't consider himself a fan of the series.
After my issue with subtitles last night, I sort of laughed when I saw today's passport theme. You're going to leave me grappling with subtitles again! Having already watched today's subset film, I used the random location generator and got ... Australia. I guess I won't have to worry about those subtitles after all.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 19th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31)
Was in Orlando over the weekend visiting our son in college and got to check out a couple of "horror" live action stuff as well as see a couple of horror movies in the theater.
We saw Malibu Horror Story (2023) and Saw X (2023).
Malibu Horror Story was an interesting and decent found footage movie. I tend to not be a fan of those because they seem pretty played out and they typically are fantastic or are awful...no in-between. This was pretty good. It did a mix of found footage, "ghost hunter" type TV shows and a normal movie narrative. It was worth seeing and very well done for what was probably ultra-low budget. He picked watching that over the new Exorcist movie.
Saw X was pretty good as well. Nice dramatic narrative with some extremely brutal traps mixed in. The less I say about the "bone marrow" trap, the better. Ick!
We also went to a really cool haunted house experience in the area called A Petrified Forest. It had 3 different houses both indoor and outdoor "walking trails." I hardly ever get "jump scared" in movie or real life but they got me twice on these. My wife and son also really enjoyed them. Very well organized and much cheaper and scarier than the "Halloween Horror Nights" at Universal which we did last year.
We did have a bomb of an event though. We went to something called "Orlando Haunts" where basically a guide takes you around several "haunted" areas of downtown Orlando and tells you about the spooky stories behind the places. Our tour guide was a soft-spoken college kid that, while nice, did not have a commanding or dramatic presence needed for such tours. Then toss in all the gross downtown Orlando people...I am talking homeless, drug use, hookers, hootchies, thugs, random weridos, etc. Basically, you name it, and it was there. Much scarier than the tour we paid for! And this soft-spoken kid is trying to tell our small group ghost stories over the blaring, thumping clubs, bars and passing cars playing their music at decibels that would make your ears bleed. It was an hour tour and we left after 20 minutes. Sketchy as fuck and none of us felt comfortable. We live in what is considered a rough town (in regard to statistics) and our downtown is NOTHING like what we experienced in downtown Orlando. And on a Sunday night at that!

Just watched a big head scratcher for me, We're All Going to the World's Fair. I genuinely didn't really understand what the point of the movie was, what the filmmaker was trying to say. Also, I didn't find it to be horror at all. There were directions I thought the movie would go that would have either made it more horror or more clear on intentions, but the movie didn't go any of those routes. In that way, I really give it some credit, but it has left me somewhat undecided on what I really thought about it. I was going to write a lot more, but I think I'm going to let it linger in my head a little longer. I might even give a listen to the audio commentary.
I can at least say I enjoyed watching it more than I did Skinamarink. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

I quite agree with you. It sounded right up my alley but I found it to be one of the most tedious films I have seen, not something I could enjoy at all.

Rewatching Deadstream for the first time since last year. This is a movie that gets better upon rewatch, because you already know the main character is annoying and you're used to him and you already know the twists coming. In a weird way, I am rather enjoying this found footage film.

I finally caught The Dead Don't Die after steering clear due to negative reviews. I sort of dug it, and the impressive cast of Jarmusch players played a big part. Apparently the excessive deadpan humor and uber-slow pacing didn't play so well for audiences at the time with Bill Murray coming back for Zombieland 2 later that same year.
Yup, last week. I was equally impressed with the magnetic reversible slipcover for Bloodsucking Freaks. This company really knows how to feed the collector's addiction.
And watching Rabid Grannies with Mom (1991) was the perfect Saturday afternoon double feature.

Finally found some films thus round that I really liked. I wasn’t sure on the first two movies in Arrow’s Italian gothic set but Third Eye and The Witch were fantastic. Gave me just the right mix of acting, atmosphere, characters, and plot. The Witch seemed the most Italian of the films and I should have probably watched that one in Italian, almost like a fable or dark fairy tale,
in watching Evil Dead Rise for the second time last night, I realized there are intended to be three books of the dead which I didN’t catch before even though it’s mentioned in AOD. Just makes me wish for a film that brings the protagonists from each film together as was mentioned after the 2013 film. Still not my favorite in the franchise but, as often happens, I liked it better on 4K than streaming.

I hit 100 last night. Time to add to the numbers.
Sad news today about Richard Roundtree. I sure thought he had a lot more horror movies on his credits, but the pickings are a little slim. I guess Q: The Winged Serpent it shall be.

I watched Deliver Us (2023) last night. I'd never heard of it but saw the poster on my dashboard in letterboxd. It's for rent on Amazon. If you like religious horror, check it out. There's some gorgeous scenery/cinematography of snowy Euro locations. I liked the story overall. It was a somewhat unique twist on the birth-of-the-anitchrist theme. I feel like they could have done more with religious visions to break up the mundane setting they were in for a good third of the movie. But overall, I enjoyed the watch.
I'm at 96, so I should hit 100 tonight or tomorrow.

When I told her I won the prize pack from Hamilton, she just rolled her eyes asking if I had gotten rid of an equal amount of titles in order to take the new ones in!

LOL I've been getting a bit more pushback this year than usual. I did fix the fence last weekend, but she did mention that 'wasn't good enough'.

I'm at 176; gunning for a personal best over 228. It's been a blast.
Some of my favorites so far this year have been: I Had a Bloody Good Time at House Harker, Miranda Veil, Venus, Frostbitten, Good Dog, History of the Occult
I was disappointed by Cobweb, It Lives Inside, Camp Murder, Benny Loves You, Unhuman, My Boyfriend's Back, Kandisha
[Your mileage may vary]
