Film comments:
Spoiler:

October 01
01. Deep Blood (1989)* Blu-ray 4/10
Thoroughly mediocre shark movie about teenagers hunting a Great White that killed one of their friends. Visually the shark action is OK but is let down, as is most of the film, by a lackluster, dreamy score that doesn't generate any tension at all. John Williams we need you! On the other hand, there are so many bizarre touches, instances of poorly delivered and lame dialog, and unintentional laughs that this was quite entertaining. A poor start for a horror challenge though.
02. Terrifier (2016)* Prime 5/10
A seemingly impossible to destroy killer clown takes out several people in an abandoned building. Art the Clown looks really creepy and the way he moves and his clown shtick add to that feeling. The setting creates an eerie atmosphere and the gore is plentiful and well done. There were a couple of scenes that made me cringe. But after a while the brutal comeuppance suffered by the victims after a series of very questionable decisions gets tiresome if not tedious. The characters are just there to get hacked up or to make surprising recoveries just to get even more hacked up. So Art is decent but I didn't care for the movie that much.
03. House of the Wolf Man (2009)* The Original Creature Features on Roku 5/10
An old dark house story turns into a monster melee at the end. A homage to the Universal monster movies of the mid 1940's starring Ron Chaney, the grandson of Lon Chaney Jr. I've been curious about this ever since I saw Ron Chaney talking about it at a convention. It kind of works. Some of the acting is bad and the rest is fair. The characters and dialog wouldn't really fit in classic Universal. The sets were OK and there was just a touch of Universal atmosphere in the outdoor scenes. After a slow, awkward start the story got interesting but the conclusion was a bit muddled. Despite the flaws I enjoyed watching this.
04. Amityville: Dollhouse (1996)* (Amityville The Cursed Collection) Blu-ray 6.5/10
Trouble follows when a little girl gets a dollhouse which is exactly like the old Amityville house. Seems like a silly premise but it actually works with some clever little bits linking the doll house to the real house. The cast is good and we get to know the characters more than in some films of this type. What happens is standard fare with no surprises but some cool looking creatures at the end made this an enjoyable watch. This may be my favorite of the Amityville object movies.

October 02
05. Final Destination (2000) (Final Destination 5 Film Collection) Blu-ray 5/10 Teenage survivors of a plane explosion find themselves marked for death. I saw this when it first came out and I didn't care for it much then. I like it more mow but still think that some of the deaths are just too elaborate, boarding on comical (Rube Goldberg possessed by the devil). The basic concept is interesting and creepy and I like the little touches that indicate that something strange is about to occur. The pacing is good and the cast is fine.
06. One Cut of the Dead (2017)* Shudder 7.5/10
Japanese film about a movie crew making a low budget zombie film who are attacked by real zombies. Then things get more interesting and very funny. It's been a while since I've laughed so much while watching a movie.
07. The Black Phone (2021)* Prime 6/10
A boy is held captive by a mask wearing serial killer but the prisoner begins to get advice from calls on a disconnected telephone. Engrossing movie with a good cast and interesting characters. The plot has some very clever aspects including the way the ultimate resolution is pieced together. There are some good suspenseful moments as the boy tries various escape plans.

October 03
08. We Might Hurt Each Other aka Pensive (2022)* Screambox 6.5/10
A graduation party turns into a nightmare after some of the students destroy strange wooden statues in this Lithuanian killer-in-the-woods movie. A long (but not boring) setup establishes some stock high school characters but the relationships don't play out in the expected ways. Some of the outdoor scenes have a nice foggy atmosphere. There is more emphasis on the characters than in many slashers and some unexpected development makes this feel fresher than other movies of this type. Although more time is spent on characters than bloody mayhem, there is enough of that. The end is a bit of a shocker.
09. Lake Bodom aka Bodom (2016)* Shudder 6/10
Finnish movie about four teenagers who go to the remote location where four campers were murdered in 1960 in order to test a theory about who might have done it. Standard setup goes in unexpected directions although there might be one twist too many. Good cinematography makes the forest setting very eerie and sinister at times. The intensity keeps growing as does the suspense but the story doesn't entirely hold up once the movie is over. Still a grim, tense ride.
10. The Evil Dead (1981) 7.5/10
A classic and there's still a lot to like: killer trees, spooky, foggy forest scenes, ground level monster cam, the pacing, the cabin ambiance, and above all Bruce Campbell's performance. The makeup holds up very well even if some of the effects are dated. The enthusiasm of the entire crew still shines through.
11. Evil Dead (2013)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
Better than I thought it would be. It kept the essence while adding some new twists. I thought the backstory for both the characters and the book were unnecessary but once the action started I was won over. Some of the characters seemed kind of dull and some of what happened seemed like cheating but overall pretty good.

October 04
12. House of Forbidden Secrets (2013)* Blu-ray 4/10
A small office building becomes the center of an undead attack after a seance goes wrong. Or maybe it's ghosts or maybe it would have happened even without the seance. A vague plot, community theater level acting, and gore effects that aren't always the best don't help the film. Still, it's not unwatchable and despite all that I kind of liked it. I have a pretty high tolerance for low budget cheese and I've seen worse. There is more information about what's going on in the IMDB summery than I got from watching the film. Maybe I should have seen the rough cut extended edition.
13. Edge of the Axe (1987)* Blu-ray 5/10
A masked axe murdered stars hacking women up in a small northern California town. The police are baffled. Feels like a cross between a slasher and a giallo. Nothing special here. For some reason while watching this I was sometimes confused although nothing going on was very complicated. It was more a matter of "Whose head is that?" The identity of the killer is reasonably well set up.
14. Martin (1977)* Blu-ray 7/10
A young man who may be a vampire goes to live with relatives in Pennsylvania. Very interesting film, almost belongs in an arthouse with a fresh take on the subject. Well made with a great wistful score - everything works so well together. I especially liked the outdoor urban scenes - really evocative of the time.
15. Chopping Mall (1986) Screambox 6/10
Security robots run amok and attack attack teens who are just trying to party in the mall after it closes. Fast and fun. Good way to close out a day's viewing.

October 05
16. Blood Tide (1982)* Blu-ray 6/10
(21st Century Film Corporation - Tom Ward and Art Schweitzer version) A couple goes to a remote Greek island searching for the man's sister and run into hostility and an ancient legend. Standard creature features stuff with great scenery. Good cast especially James Earl Jones and Jose Ferrer. Slow burn but the island and the inhabitants have a sinister feel that holds interest. The finale falls a little flat. The monster is cheesy but is used sparingly so that doesn't detract very much.
17. The Tall Man (1986)* Prime 7/10
Almost twenty children are missing from a dirt poor town in northern Washington and the locals believe it's being done by someone they call The Tall Man. Very unusual horror movie but very engrossing. For me it was edge of your seat stuff for much of the film, although some might think it winds down too much in the last half hour. Good acting and an intelligent script. Go into this not knowing anything more about it and it should pay off. (Stephen McHattie checkmark).
18. The Catman of Paris (1946)* Blu-ray 5/10
(Republic) A series of murders in Paris seem to have been committed by a giant cat. Average B-movie but with some of that Republic shine. Not much atmosphere but there's a good fist fight and a carriage chase to liven things up.

October 06
19. Curse of the Black Widow (1977)* Prime 5.5/10
A PI discovers that a murder case he is on is related to other killings since all the victims were killed in the same way and all were covered in what appeared to be spider silk. Could ancient native American legends be true? Very by-the-book story with no surprises but a good cast of mostly TV actors. The last 20 minutes are exciting and the creature looks pretty good for a TV movie (ABC) of this era.
20. Evil Little Things (2020)* Prime 5/10
Two long stories and one shorter one as part of the wraparound segments, all about dolls. The first, about leprechauns is fair and is too long. The second, about a women who collects dolls is better. The wraparound story is about a boy who is afraid of the dark and has a satisfying conclusion.
21. Lavender (2016)* Prime 6/10
A women who gets amnesia after an auto accident returns to her newly discovered childhood home and begins having strange experiences. Low key and is slow to get going but the story is good and the cast is decent. It's never boring but it's never very scary or exciting either.

October 07
22. Death Magic (1992)* Blu-ray 5.5/10
(Courthouse - actually a court-martial) Five young students of the occult resurrect a brutal 19th century cavalry office burning for revenge on those who condemned him. What could go wrong? Surprisingly entertaining very low budget shot on video effort is cheap in every way but also has decent, cheesy gore, lots of nudity, and a villain with a great maniacal laugh. Often slowed down by too much magical babble and with some of the poorest acting for police officers every, it's still fun to watch.
23. Magic (1978) 8/10
(Nightclub) A struggling stage magician becomes successful after adding ventriloquism and a dummy to his act. Great acting and an intelligent script with events getting more and more creepy as the story progresses. Is it madness or magic? For once I like the ambiguity. I haven't seen this since it was originally in theaters. I liked it then and I still like it now.
24. Bio-Zombie (1998)* Blu-ray 7/10
(Mall) Two tough talking petty crooks who run a pirate VCD store in a Hong Kong mall have to fight off zombies created by a biological weapon. Lots of fun with a great cast of characters. Starts out straight, quickly turns to comedy and then becomes more and more serious as the action picks up. I got a few laughs and never felt that the funny stuff got too stupid The zombie scenes were very well done.
25. The Prophecy (1995)* 4.5/10
(Church) A police detective, who once studied for the priesthood, investigates a series of killings involving burnt corpses which seems to relate to a vision he once had. There's nothing really wrong with this movie but for some reason I just didn't care for it that much. I enjoy this kind of story but even Christopher Walken, who I usually really like, didn't help. I guess the basic concept just seemed kind of silly and that tainted my overall experience.

October 08
26. The Vampire and the Ballerina (1960)* Blu-ray 6/10
The locals say that a vampire haunts the woods near a villa where a ballet troop is rehearsing their new show. Very good atmosphere especially in the outdoor scenes but also in a ruined castle and lots of lovely ladies. The vampires are a little different from the Universal version and look a fake in full vamp mode but the conclusion is well done. There are a couple of dance numbers which are fine but look more like modern dance than ballet.
27. The Blancheville Monster aka Horror (1963)* (Arrow Gothic Fantastico) Blu-ray 6.5/10
A woman returns to her ancestral home just before her twenty-first birthday and discovered that many things have changed and not in good ways. Some creepy outdoor shots but here it's more about the inside of the home with lots of staircases including an eerie one leading to an empty tower room. There's also a huge burned out abbey. Some of the makeup is a little cheesy again but it's a well made movie with a good mystery and resolution.
28. The Monster of the Opera (1964)* (Severin Danza Macabra) Blu-ray 4.5/10
Not an opera really, just some guy who wants to put on a show and rents a dilapidated theater with a history of strange disappearances. This is a weird movie. The monster in questions is a very different breed of vampire who we hardly see in the first half of the film. This half could be described as a screwball showbiz romantic comedy. Things do get more horrific in the last half, including touches of sadism, along with a lot of running around. There's not much spooky atmosphere in the sets although the crumbling building does have it's points. Not what I was expecting so the score could go up with further viewings.
29. The Vampire Doll (1964)* (Arrow The Bloodthirsty Trilogy) Blu-ray 6/10
A couple goes looking for the woman's missing brother who went to see his girlfriend. Japanese film with a strong western gothic feel. The vampire is more like a Japanese ghost and there is a bit of pseudo-science thrown in. Not super creepy but there are some good touches.

October 09
30. A Blade in the Dark (1983)* Blu-ray 6/10
A film composer moves into a huge villa to work on music for a horror movie but almost immediately strange things begin happening all of which seem related to the previous occupant, a mysterious woman named Linda. The real villa used provides lots of opportunities for creepy scenes although the few furnishings make the look sterile. The stalking scenes are suspenseful and the killings long and bloody. The pacing is okay but seems a little slow at times maybe because I watched the extended version.
31. Delirium (1972)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
Police and a local scientist investigate a series of murders of young, attractive women all of whom had the same kind of wounds. Not a typical giallo since you know who the killer is right away but when a second killer turns up this things get crazy. This is a bizarre, bloody, sexy, nasty, and sleazy film. Even the second killer isn't much of a mystery and the plot is a jumble but it just doesn't matter. The is the third film in two days I've seen by director Renato Polselli. By chance I watched them in chronological order and they get more and more off the wall.
32. The Brute Man (1946) 6/10
A collage football star is deformed by a chemistry experiment gone bad and seeks vengeance on those he considers responsible and anyone else who gets in his way. Above average B-movie stars Rondo Hatton who was afflicted with acromegaly. This film was produced by Universal who had Hatton under contract but was released by PRC after Hatton's death. This explains why this looks so much better than the typical PRC effort.

October 10
33. Mandy (2018)* Shudder 7/10
A brutal attack by a religious cult lead to a blood soaked trail of revenge. A standard story told with lots of style, almost too much at times. The word "excess" popped into my head more than once while watching this very strange film but despite the fact that sometimes the visual touches took me out of the story they more often worked and resulted in a very absorbing, surreal experience which wasn't totally satisfying in the end. Still any movie which is basically a quest in a very dark fantasy world with demonic bikers and chainsaw fights has something going for it.
34. Saw (2004)* Prime 8/10
Two men wake up chained up in a dingy, filthy room with a corpse in the middle and no memory of how they got there. I thought this series was all about torture so I stayed away but that isn't the case. Instead it's full of tension with some very gruesome scenes and more than one mystery to solve. There are revelations and clever twists throughout the story making this a great edge of the seat experience.
35. Vicious Fun (2020)* Shudder 6/10
A geeky critic for a horror film magazine accidentally ends up in some kind of group therapy session for serial killers. Sounds kind of dumb but worked pretty well. Each killer is a sendup of a different type of classic murderer and the comedy isn't stupid at all. There are some interesting kills and several exciting parts as the killers chase the hero.
36. Munger Road (2011)* Prime 3/10
Police in a small town get a report that a killer who livered there has escaped. Meanwhile four teenagers out for stupid fun seem to have disappeared. OK for a while with some good suspenseful scenes as the police search dark tunnels and the teens grow anxious due to car trouble. BUT, there is no end. The film just stops after a typical plot twist and we get a quick "To Be Continued"! It never was. So OK but nothing special for the journey but the destination never arrives.

October 11
37. The Burning (1981) 7/10
Top notch slasher in the summer camp film with a good backstory, likable kids, bloody kills, good stalking scenes, and a satisfying finish.
38. Ebola Syndrome (1996)* Blu-ray 6/10
A brutal small time crook becomes a super spreader for the ebola virus. Bloody, icky, and really, really gross at times with a lot of nudity and some unfortunate animal violence. Kudos to star Anthony Wong for bringing to life one of the most disgusting and despicable characters I've ever seen. There are spots of very dark humor which fit right in to this over the top story.
39. Evil Bong 666 (2017)* Freevee 2/10
fI'm not really sure what the plot was in this awful, stupid movie or even if there was one. I could see someone liking this more if their sense of humor was very different from mine. Also there seem to be some characters from previous films that I didn't recognize and weren't really explained (I've only seen the first two in the series). I recognized the Gingerdead Man but none of the human characters. Theres also a lot of swearing which doesn't usually put me off but got really tiresome here. The only reason this scores so high is that it's short (66 min.) and it gives three marks in the checklist.

October 12
40. The Company of Wolves (1984)* Shudder 7.5/10
Very interesting take on the Little Red Riding Hood story, framed as a dream by a young girl. Most of the story takes place in a wonderfully executed fairy tale forest and provides a well done backstory for Red. Angela Lansbury is great as a slightly eerie grandmother and the whole cast provides good performances. There are a few scenes set in the real world which I'm not sure were totally necessary and I didn't quite get the very end. Still an enchanting movie. I liked the main character who is a very self reliant, fearless girl. The werewolf aspect is there but in a very nontraditional way. There are a couple of stories told within the main story.
41. Dementia aka Daughter of Horror (1955)* Screambox 6/10
A nightmare on film. A woman wakes up in a dingy hotel room, finds a large switchblade and goes out for a series of sleazy urban adventures which get more and more horrific. No actual dialog but a good jazzy score punctuated by a female voice singing an eerie, wordless tune. All in all pretty mesmerizing. I've been curious about this for quite a while and am glad I finally had a chance to see it.
42. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) Blu-ray 6.5/10
A young woman learns much about her past and present when actors and missionaries come to her small town. There are some excellent images throughout this film which I enjoyed although the plot is a little slippery. I thought I kind of had a handle on it until the end when nothing really made sense. Maybe that's the point. I'm not good with symbolism so I could have missed a lot. The music and the visuals did keep me engrossed though.

October 13
43. Psycho Goreman (2020)* Shudder 3/10
A little brat and her put upon brother stumble upon the destroyer of the universe and manage to gain control of it. Just awful. The lead is mildly amusing for a few minutes but quickly becomes really annoying and is also directly responsible for the deaths of several sentient beings, including a human, but nobody seems to notice. I don't know if this is supposed to be a parody, a kid's movie, a parody of a kid's movie, a parody of a Troma film, or what. It's clearly not supposed to be taken seriously but none of it is funny. The effects and creature design are mostly OK but it's painful to watch.
44. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) 5.5/10
Jason returns from the grave due to stupidity and a storm. Bloodshed follows. It's been a while since I've watched one of these and it was good to get back into the world. This one struck me asl pretty average although I liked the beginning scenes in the graveyard. Some good Alice Cooper songs too.
45. Bats (1999)* Prime 7/10
Bats (some are really big) mutated by a scientist to improve on evolution become a threat to humans in a town in southern Texas. Really by the numbers with a few welcome exceptions. I tend to like these kind of movies and I was in the mood for this. The bats look really good especially in closeups with their nasty little faces and big teeth. The action is predictable but well done and the cast is just fine.

October 14
46. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) Blu-ray 7/10
Very good version of the story. John Barrymore is solid as both Jekyll and Hyde. In the last part of the film there are a couple of scenes where the makeup and his acting make Hyde a truly horrifying creature.
47. The Final Wish (2018)* Prime 5/10
A man returns home to help his mother after the death of his father. He meets hostility from her and some of his childhood friends until his luck takes a turn for the good. The setup was better than the resolution for me. I liked that you only gradually realized something was going on but I couldn't really follow the movie logic of how things worked out.
48. Alone in the Dark (1982)* Blu-ray 6/10
After a power failure, four dangerous psychopaths escape from a new-age institution and go after a new doctor and his family. Some familiar stars do a good job but I never felt a whole lot of tension during the action. There should have been more Jack Palance and Martin Landau also seemed to disappear too often but this quirky movie is still fun to watch.
49. Machine Girl (2008)* 5.5/10
A teenage girl loses her left arm while seeking vengeance on a gang who killed her younger brother but gets two attachments to help her, a machine gun and a chainsaw. Very bloody with ridiculous violence approaching comic book levels at times. The constant barrage of creative bloodshed makes you wonder what outrageous over the top gore is coming next and strong strains of dark humor help keep things entertaining.

October 15
50. The Lawnmower Man (1992)* Prime 5.5/10
The Director's Cut. A scientist using virtual reality to enhance human intelligence starts experimenting on his low IQ gardener. OK, nothing really new in the science runs amok genre. The performances are good but the special effects are really starting to show their age. Some seem to be animation and the virtual reality stuff can be a little cheesy. I was never bored but the movie feels long, especially for the very predictable payoff at the end. Maybe the theatrical version is tighter.
51. Come True (2020)* Shudder 6/10
A homeless teenager who needs a place to sleep and has started having strange dreams signs up for a sleep study project at a university. I thought the central concept of the story was eerie and interesting. Most of the film had a dreamlike quality and was very intriguing but two things kept pulling me out. First the chapter titles, which i generally find unnecessary in a film, were particularly annoying here and sometimes the back ground music became even more annoying which destroyed any mood they were trying to create. The lead up to the end was a mix of kind of stupid and very creepy. If the end is taken at face value I didn't like it - negating most of the ideas previously shown. It would however explain much of what happened (like the shadowy dream figures) and also some inconsistencies that appeared (like the crap security at the hospital) even though it open up new ones.
52. Paranormal Activity:The Marked Ones (2014)* (Paranormal Activity 6 Movie Collection) Blu-ray 5/10
Soon after his 18th birthday a young man begins to experience strange occurrences. There is a change in the location to a poor Hispanic neighborhood with mostly new characters. The flow of the story is competently done with an exciting and creepy finale but once the movie is over you realize you've seen this all before.
53. Hand of Death (1962) 4.5/10
John Agar has a lab accident and turns into The Thing except he's black instead of orange and he has hair which looks very weird. And he also kills anyone he comes in direct contact with. Very basic plot - lab accident, killings, police search, resolution and it only runs an hour so there's not much elaboration. Not one of Agar's best.

October 16
54. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) Blu-ray 8/10
Great version of the story with a cast of thousands (probably) and excellent sets. Lon Chaney is perfect as Quasimodo. While he can be tender at times he always looks fierce and when he gets pissed off he is truly horrifying. Nice subplot concerning a rebellious thieve's guild and the king's cruelty.
55. The Amazing Mr. X (1948)* Blu-ray 6/10
Just after she accepts a marriage proposal a woman begins to hear the voice of her deceased husband and she turns to a handsome mystic who she has just met for help. Decent thriller with supernatural touches. Turhan Bey as the mystic is very good and it's always fun to see Richard Carlson, one of my favorite B-movie actors. The rest of the cast is fine. There's a good twist or two which I didn't see coming.
56. Torso (1973)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
In order to escape from the pressures of classes and news of brutal murders in Rome, a group of college students go to an isolated hilltop villa. Lots of nudity and some very grisly killings with some of the gore taking place off screen. There's good tension built up as the killer hacks up some bodies for disposal. Although there are lots of suspects the killer's identity isn't particularly a surprise.
57. Ringu (1998) Blu-ray 7/10
This film gets creepy rather quickly and maintains that feeling as a reporter investigates a series of student deaths which may be linked to a strange video tape. I really like plots where the answer to what is going on is gradually revealed through character efforts and this has that in spades. The "how" of what's happening isn't addressed but in this case it didn't bother me.

October 17
58. Scream and Scream Again (1970) Blu-ray 5/10
While police in London search for a serial killer, an official in a small dictatorship starts taking over and a man in a hospital is having his limbs removed, one by one. All of this eventually cones together in this spy, horror, science fiction mash-up. Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Vincent Price get top billing but all only have small roles with Cushing being particularly underused. Disappointing but an OK film.
59. Terror at Tenkiller (1986) Blu-ray 4/10
Two women go to a lakeside cabin to spend the summer away from an abusive boyfriend one of them is trying to dump. Meanwhile people are being killed in the small town but no one seems to notice. I've seen this before and I remember thinking it was a bad movie mostly consisting of two women having inane conversations while on vacation and very few kills. Luckily, there are more kills than I recalled and less time on dull conversations but it's still not a very good film. The killer is revealed very early in the story and the acting is poor and the excitement level is very low. It is watchable though and comparable to many other low budget regional horror films I've seen.
60. Saw II (2005)* Prime 7/10
Eight people are trapped in a room and have two hours to live having been exposed to a deadly nerve gas. The challenge is to find the antidotes. I liked this a little bit less than the first one. With eight people there is more gore but also less time to spend on the unique games for each person - so this was bloodier but less clever. The ending was very smartly done though and keeps this above average.

October 18
61. V/H/S/2 (2013)* Prime 6/10
Anthology film with four stories plus the framing story about a PI and his assistant who are hired to find a missing collage student and discover a pile of very strange VHS tapes in his apartment. The tapes viewed deal with an artificial eye, a zombie attack, an Indonesian cult, and a slumber party gone bad. I liked this a little more than the first one. All the stories are decent or better, my favorite being the one about the cult, followed by the artificial eye tale. I'm still tired of shaky cam and video static but at last the plots were interesting here.
62. Dream Home (2010)* 6.5/10
A young woman living in Hong Kong is obsessed with buying a flat with a view in a particular building and is willing to go to extreme and bloody measures to get it. It took me quite a while to see how the gory mayhem was going to help achieve the goal but I eventually got it. At least, unlike many slasher films, there was an understandable goal. The story jumped between several points in the woman's life to give context to her actions as well as showing the state of her current life. And yeah, there is some social commentary here but it is well done within an engaging story.
63. Curtains (1983) 6/10
An intense and slimy director summons six actress to a mansion to audition for the lead in his next movie. One never arrives and the other five soon start disappearing. Good slasher with a nice dose of creepiness added by the hag mask that the killer wears and a disturbing doll that is a prop in some of the murders. The kills aren't that bloody (at least compared to some stuff I've been watching lately) but the stalking scenes are usually suspenseful, especially a long one near the end of the film.

64. The Wraith (1986)* Prime 6/10
A mysterious driver in a cool looking car starts killing members of a drag racing gang who have no qualms about stealing cars or killing people. Pretty good stuff. A classic JD movie with supernatural elements. The racing scenes are exciting but do get samey after a while, there are several good explosions, and unusually the sheriff isn't a total dick.
65. Encounter of the Spooky Time (1980)* Blu-ray 7.5/10
Sammo Hung stars in and directed this story about a daring villager who is targeted by a priest who has been hired to kill him. The vampire and ghost makeup is excellent, the comedy works well in the story, and once the action really gets going it is all you could want.
66. The Seventh Grave (1965)* (Severin Danza Macabra) Blu-ray 4/10
Several people are summoned to a gloomy castle for the reading of a will but strange and deadly things begin to happen before the reading takes place. Kind of blah really. There are some of the elements of gothic horror but there is hardly any atmosphere. There is a seance which helps a little but it doesn't matter for the rest of the story. An escaped leper doesn't provide any chills and there is an old lab that isn't very impressive.

October 20
67. The Ape Man (1943) Prime 6/10
Lugosi plays a scientist who is half man and half ape and losing his humanity more each day - the result of an experiment that worked too well. Only spinal fluid taken from a living human being can slow the process. A standard setup but a lot happens in a short time in this Poverty Row gem. The usual characters but a pretty good cast and Bela does a nice job moving like an ape and flying into rages. There is one pointless, annoying character that provides unfunny relief (I guess that was the point) and provides a very stupid joke at the end.
68. Possession (1981)* Shudder 7/10
Watched on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. A government agent returns home after being away for a long time and finds his wife cold and hostile. Starts out like an intense arthouse relationship drama but gets very strange and terrifying. There is emotional violence along with bloodshed. A great cast brings challenging characters, who go through serious changes, to life very well. I'm glad I had Joe Bob along to help me appreciate things during the film.
69. House of Terrors (1965)* Blu-ray 6/10
A widow, whose husband died in an asylum, discovers that she is the co-owner with her father-in-law of a remote mansion which her husband bought without telling anyone. Japanese film strongly influenced by western ghost stories and gothic chills. There is a western style mansion, fog, a graveyard, a creepy statue, and a hunchback caretaker. As more people arrive at the mansion the body count starts to go up and unsavory secrets are revealed.

October 21
70. Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor (1990)* 6/10
A scientist working at a bio-research company is infected with alien DNA and starts mutating into a horrible creature. The acting is usually poor but funny at times, especially the head of the company, the female scientist, and the teen daughters of one of the early victims. The teenagers, along with a boyfriend, become so annoying that I've rarely wanted any movie characters to die so much. But there are a variety of creatures all of which look good (although the main monster's finally stage is a little bland) and some brief stop-motion scenes which are decently done.
71. Terror in the Midnight Sun (1959) 5/10
Something crashes in the wilds of Lapland so a scientific expedition is sent to check it out. Joint Swedish and US production of a standard 1950's drive-in monster movie, which is not a bad thing at all. Very good buildup with some beautiful and sometimes eerie snowy landscapes. The creature is a little disappointing (looking like a wookie with a really bad hair day) and there's not much mayhem and destruction. Also, the reasons for the object's visit and the creature's actions aren't even hinted at, always disappointing.
72. Sometimes They Come Back (1986)* Prime Rental 6/10
A man returns to his hometown to take a teaching job and begins to have nightmares about the death of his older brother which happened when the man was nine years old. Pretty good. The middle part dragged somewhat, maybe due to adapting a short story to a feature film but the last twenty minutes or so are very good, quite tense and suspenseful.
73. Midnight (1986)* Blu-ray 7/10
While on the way to Florida three teenagers run into trouble from a back woods satanic cult. An unusual heroine is a plus and there are few minor surprises and a constant feeling of danger and building tension. There are some bloody kills and an actual reason for all the mayhem.

October 22
74. Blades (1989)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
A series of murders in which the bodies are totally sliced up occurs at a golf course which is getting ready to host a big golf tournament for charity. An outrageous parody of Jaws played straight for the most part which is why it worked so well for me.
75. A Cat in the Brain aka Nightmare Concert (1990)* Blu-ray 7/10
(Enzo Sciotti poster) Lucio Fulci plays horror movie director Lucio Fulci who fears he is going mad because scenes from his films, and other terrible images, are starting to invade his personal life. Fulci used scenes from seven other movies for about a third of this one but these are well integrated. This is basically an onslaught of gruesome, gory, and disgusting images which almost overwhelms the viewer but which I found strangely compelling. The rather thin plot is resolved and although no great actor Fulci is more than adequate for the part of a middle aged guy wandering through a series of nightmares.
76. Killer Condoms (1996)* Blu-ray 3.5/10
Police investigate a growing number of cases where men are getting their penises bitten off, presumably by prostitutes but the truth is far more sinister. The creature design is fine as are the effects but there isn't much variety, although I did like the way the little guys moved before they went all killer. The story is dumb although the main characters are OK. The problem for me was that I quickly found the whole thing boring with heavy handed satire and not particularly humorous. It was also way too long and I watched the shorter theatrical version.
77. Wendigo aka Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo (1995) Blu-ray 4.5/10
Drunken hunters stupidly shoot up an isolated cabin killing the owner and freeing an ancient evil known as the Wendigo. Worst thing here is the acting which ranges from barely OK to fairly bad. The story is fine and the creatures which are a mix of puppets, makeup, and stop motion are generally good for a very low budget production. I didn't realize that I had streamed this a few years ago but it did seem familiar in places.

October 23
78. Day of the Dead (1985) Blu-ray 8/10
Scientists and soldiers try to survive and do research in a huge cave complex while zombies roam the surface and animosity grows among the humans. Solid acting, even though some might consider some of the performances as over the top they worked for me, and a good script with some complex characters lay the foundation and excellent makeup and special effects result in a true classic. For once the human stories are as interesting and important as zombie gut munching.
79. World's End: The Legacy of Day of the Dead (2013)* (On Day of the Dead disk) Blu-ray
Very well done retrospective look at the film has interviews with most of the principal cast and crew. Includes the genesis of the movie, the makeup effects, and the reception then and now. Lots of insights and great stories.
80. The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Blu-ray 7/10
An accident in a medical supply warehouse caused the dead to rise from a nearby cemetery. Quite a different tone with broad humor, although some is dark and some is more subtle. The zombies are very different from Romero films lusting for brains and even able to talk. The buildup is just OK partly because the characters are one dimensional but once the zombies get going the film really shines. The effects are good.

October 24
81. Satan's Slaves (2017)* Shudder 7.5/10
(Indonesia) After their mother dies and their father leaves to find work, a group of siblings, all very likable, start to experience very strange events. A superior story of a haunting and a little bit more. The events range from little things to major happenings but all of them are very creepy. The way the story unfolds isn't different from many others but is done much better and there is a twist near the end that I didn't see coming but fit right in the the story logic. The very end of the film is strange and unsettling.
82. Roh aka Soul (2019)* Shudder 6/10
(Malaysia) After being visited by a strange child, frightful things begin to happen to a woman and her two children who live deep int the jungle. Some beautiful and eerie jungle scenes set the atmosphere but there isn't a strong plot and the buildup is slow and deliberate. The family suffers several tragedies of a bloody and horrific nature. I got the overall story of the film but really didn't understand a lot of the details, in particular why certain things happened and the identity of a particular character.
83. Calvaire (2004)* Shudder 6/10
(France) A traveling entertainer makes an unfortunate lodging choice when his van breaks down in a storm. This is a dark, brutal, and depressing picture but I can't deny the high quality of the film making. Very much not for me though.

October 25
84. X (2022)* 5.5/10
A small film crew shooting a porno movie rents part of a farm but runs into trouble with the elderly owners. OK, takes a while to get going and once it does there's nothing special about the kills but some are moderately suspenseful. I get trying for a different take on a slasher movie, giving more personality to everyone involved and going with a more sympathetic take on the killer and more believable motive. Being a senior myself I don't really think all of this could have been done so quickly.
85. Evil Dead Rise (2023)* Blu-ray 7/10
An earthquake exposes the hiding place of an evil, supernatural book which foolish humans accidentally use to unleash a demonic force. Action packed and very, very bloody. It kept me enthralled as the tension kept mounting until the very end when I was feeling just a little numb from it all. I think it ended just in time. Fits very well into the Evil Dead mold.
86. Saw III (2006)* Prime 7.5/10
More of the same but still intense and interesting. Some loose ends are wrapped up from the previous movies and the focus is narrower, with only two victims in the main story. Still grisly, bloody, and at times disgusting. Just about the time you think there's nothing really new here, surprises at the end make you ready for the next one. We get a few hints about Jigsaw's past. I am starting to get a little tired of Jigsaw's arrogance but I guess that's just part of being a serial killer.

October 26
87. The Terror Within II (1990)* Blu-ray 5/10
(Code Red Blu-ray #112)More post plague antics featuring two of the characters from the original. From what I can remember the stories seem similar. In this one we have the not so hidden base, the usual mutants along with a peyote munching voodoo cult and some of the most insipid dialog I've heard in a while. Also most of the characters, even the hero, are pretty dim. These people would have trouble surviving crossing a busy street let alone horny mutants. Still fun in a dumb way.
88. House on the Edge of the Park (1980)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
Home invasion film starts out promising when a psycho nutcase and his low IQ buddy invite themselves to a get together held by some rich a-holes. The middle gets a little frustrating as more and more opportunities to escape are ignored by the rich folk. A twist near the end (almost from left field) saves the day though. David Hess is particularly intense as the psycho nutcase.
89. The Rain Killer (1980)* Blu-ray 5/10
(Scorpion Releasing) Policed and the F.B.I. hunt a serial killer who stabs women but only when it's raining. Just OK. Everything is pretty average. There is kind of a twist near the end and there is a major red herring who so obviously not the killer it's ridiculous. Only very minor horror elements.
90. Empire of the Ants (1977) 7/10
Radioactive waste cause ants to grow really big around part of the Florida coast. I really like Bert I. Gordon movies, especially the giant creature sci-fi ones. This one comes later than most of his films of this type but it is probably his most accomplished work in terms of using miniatures with real critters to make them look big. Yeah, the story is nothing special except for near the end and the large sized prop ants look a little cheesy at times but I had a ton of fun rewatching this.

October 27
91. Night Screams (1987)* Blu-ray 5/10
Two escaped cons hiding in the basement, a bunch of horny teenagers partying upstairs, and a slasher wandering around may be just too much for one movie. In particular, I found the convicts, especially the psycho one prone to long speeches to be a little annoying and distracting although I see how they were used to set up part of the finale. The identity of the slasher wasn't a big surprise but there was a lot of variety in the methods used to kill. This was the theatrical version which was padded by the producers but I don't think that mattered much.
92. FleshEater (1988)* Blu-ray 6/10
(Vanity) While clearing a field, a farmer unearths a coffin which contains the living dead. A bunch of teens picnicking nearby soon feel it's wrath. The acting is poor, there is hardly any plot, and the pacing is off with some parts of the story lasting much too long. Still, I liked this. The zombie munching scenes were OK and there was just something that made this film entertaining. Maybe it was heart - there was one of those, or guts, or maybe even brains. Several tributes to Night of the Living Dead where the creator and star of this film was one of the featured zombies.
93. The Undertaker (1988)* Blu-ray 6/10
An undertaker loves his work way too much and his nephew becomes suspicious of his late night activities. Joe Spinell gives quite a sleazy performance as the main character. The story seems to jump around but isn't incomprehensible and the kills and blood are pretty well done. The ending is abrupt and out of left field which left me a little disappointed.

October 28
94. Love Brides of the Blood Mummy aka Lips of Blood (1973)* Blu-ray 5/10
An occult researcher obtains a 3,000 year old sarcophagus and finds a perfectly preserved and intact body inside which he revives using an electrical device. The mummy needs psychic energy (from torture and sex) and fresh human blood to survive so we get a series of young girls stripped, whipped and raped and their blood drunk. This is repeated too many times and gets tedious. There is also a crudely animated crawling hand and an anticlimactic end. There are some great outdoor location shots and a neat old castle which gives a nice gothic feel.
95. The Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)* Shudder 8/10
In 18th century France, the court sends a naturalist and his Native American companion to investigate reports of a beast terrorizing a distant province. Wow! A mashup of horror, a historical epic, conspiracies, and king-fu movies and also very long. I enjoyed every minute of this. It's beautifully filmed with wonderful outdoor scenes and great indoor sets with lush costumes. The actors do a good job and it's got acton, suspense, and a few really creepy scenes. Good stuff all around.
96. El bosque del lobo aka The Ancines Woods (1970)* (Villages of the Damned: Three Horrors From Spain) Blu-ray 7/10
In 19th century Spain, a traveling peddler and guide who also delivers notes and news between villages suffers murderous fits which endanger any traveling companions. Much of the film takes place in the forest which is nicely photographed. There is sometimes a dreamlike or fairy tale type feeling to the story which plays out like a dark fable. Not ever scary there is a feeling of growing tension as suspicion begins to fall on the peddler. Based on a true historical figured who some considered a werewolf.
97. Spasms (1983)* 5/10
A wealthy hunter who was once nearly killed by the beast has a giant snake, worshipped by some island natives, captured and brought to San Diego. It escapes, mayhem follows. OK. Starts out strong with scenes of the native ceremony but turns into just another monster on the loose story. The effects of the snake bite are well done and the critter looks good in some brief glimpses near the end. Stars Peter Fonda and Oliver Reed.
98. The Boogey Man (1980)* Blu-ray 6/10
A brother and sister are haunted bye a horrible childhood incident when the boy murdered the mother's cruel lover. Starts out like a Halloween clone but takes a slightly different direction with a mirror providing the gateway for a supernatural slasher which is willing to kill any one, any time. Some of the kills are creative but things can get a little silly. Feels a bit like The Exorcist at times and the farmhouse has an Amityville vibe. John Carradine does his usual nice job as a shrink.

October 29
99. Sea Fever (2019)* Shudder 7/10
An introverted graduate student in marine biology goes out with a fishing boat and they encounter a strange deep sea life form which infects their fresh water supply with deadly parasites. Good story and acting with lots of suspense and some well done special effects. The creature isn't that impressive but is adequate for the job it needs to do.
100. Willow Creek (2013)* Screambox 4.5/10
A couple heads into the woods to find the spot where a famous Bigfoot movie was shot or maybe even see the big guy himself. Written and directed by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait. Basically a found footage film with a nice long buildup but the payoff just isn't there. There is an interesting, rather long scene where strange sounds from the woods drive the tension and the frequent discussions between the believer (the man) and the sceptic (the woman) do clearly lay out the different positions. The acting is good but the end fails miserably for me. I have no idea what happened to these two. The only clues are a lot of shaky cam and a large woman dressed only in panties we get a very quick look at. Huh? Remember, it's all about the journey.
101. Saw IV (2007)* Prime 6.5/10
Unrated. Director's cut? Still found this absorbing once things got moving but it seems like they can pull any character out of a hat to keep franchise going. I'm also getting tired of how Jigsaw can know so much about everything. We get more on Jigsaw's background including info on his wife, who I don't think we've seen before. I imagine all this was confusing with all the call backs to earlier films when you only saw one per year. I have trouble figuring out who's who sometimes watching one a week.
102. Darker Than Night (1975)* (Mexican Gothic: The Films of Carlos Enrique Taboada) Blu-ray 7/10
After a young woman inherits an old mansion from her aunt, she and her three roommates move in but ignore her aunt's cat who soon dies. Shortly after that the girls start to die in strange ways. A quiet but very well done haunted house/ supernatural revenge story. The deaths are preceded by ghostly apparitions and creepy atmosphere. There's nothing flashy here but the characters are well developed and the house itself is a great classic gothic structure which gets very eerie when the lights go out.

October 30
103. Demons 2 (1986) Shudder 6/10
Watched on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Reporters accidentally revive a demon from the first film which then infects a high rise apartment building. A loose plot but a whole lot of demon action. The makeup is good and there is at least one startling special effect which makes no sense in terms of the rest of the movie - but it is pretty darned cool. Fun to watch but you do have to turn your brain off.
104. Poison for the Fairies (1986)* (Mexican Gothic: The Films of Carlos Enrique Taboada) Blu-ray 7/10
A new student, Flavia, becomes friends with another girl in her class, Veronica, who says that she is a witch. Some things that occur seem to make this claim true. Leisurely paced but never boring the relationship between the two girls soon becomes dominated by Veronica which leads to unexpected results. There is dreamy, fairy tale quality to much of the film due to the cinematography and the score and the tales that Veronica's family tells her. The all leads to a shocking but logical conclusion. Most of the adult faces are never shown except brief shots when dead or for shock value. Very enjoyable after the hyper action of Demons 2.
105. Inferno aka Hell (1979)* Blu-ray 6/10
A young orphan woman, Aki, who was conceived in an adulterous relationship accidentally returns to the town where she was born after a series of unfortunate incidents. Deliberate build up as people become more and more cruel to each other under the influence of Aki's murdered mother. It is a long movie and I did find my attention drifting once in a while until we got to hell. A well made film which I plan to revisit sometime which is not at the end of a challenge.
106. Trick or Treat (1986)* Screambox 6/10
A bullied heavy metal fan is given the last, unreleased album made by his recently deceased rock hero. Chaos follows when he discovers satanic messages on the record when played backwards. This one woke me up with a good soundtrack and some fun satire in between the supernatural hijinks. Well paced until the conclusion which I thought went on too long in several spots. The effects are cheesy but get the job done and the acting is fine for the typical characters.

October 31
107. The Barn (2016)* Screambox 5.5/10
Five teenagers go trick or treating at an old barn they've been warned to stay away from and unleash three demons which want to gather flesh to bring back to hell. Fun story not to be taken too seriously. I like the look of the demons, the boogey man, a killer scarecrow, and a pumpkin man with cool flaming eyes and they have distinctive weapons and ways of killing. The characters are likable and the acting is OK. The is some decent gore but some other effects are on the cheesy side. Takes place in 1989 and does feel like it was made around then.
108. 10/31 (2017)* Screambox 6/10
Five story anthology movie with a Halloween focus. The framing segment is a horror host (Malvolia) showing five monster stories on Halloween night. The first concerns an old hag, the second has a creepy scarecrow, the third involves terror at an after hours party at a roller rink, the fourth has some creepy trick or treaters, and the fifth has a Samhain slasher. Quality varies of course. My favorites were the scarecrow and roller rink stories. I thought the weakest was the old hag. The other two were good but a little unsatisfying in the end.
109. All Hallow's Eve (2013)* Shudder 6.5/10
Watched on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Anthology movie with three stories plus a framing story about a babysitter who watches a video tape that was put into one of her kid's bags while trick or treating. The first is about a woman in a train station who runs into an evil clown, the second a possible alien abduction, and the third is a all out Art the Clown stalker short. The film making is better than the rating since the movie lost points because the first two stories did not have an end - they just sort of stop.
110. The Barn 2 (2022)* Screambox 4.5/10
Halloween is back and a different barn now has a well to hell. There's more of everything, more monsters including zombies, more gore, more kills but some of the charm is gone. I liked the designs of the demons that also appeared in the first film less here than in the original. Not at all bad but a little disappointing.
111. House of Frankenstein (1943) Blu-ray 6/10
A Universal monster mash is always a fine way to end a challenge. I was a little surprised to see that even this late in the game there were still several nice atmospheric shots including an ice cave and a marsh.
