Any need to debate whether Groundhog Day should be counted as a snub in 1994? Although being in the often overlooked comedy genre, I think it's an almost flawless film (once you wince through the misogyny, which could be considered a necessity in the film because Phil starts out as a d!ck) and should have at least garnered a script nomination, if not one for directing. And who doesn't love the Weatherman song??

As far as snubs are concerned, personal opinion is all. you need. I would have voted for Groundhog Day for best screenplay. I'm not sure who I'd boot from that director list though.

No no! I don't think it is necessary. Just thought we could have a little fun with it.

You definitely can't remove Spielberg, Campion or Altman (I still watch Short Cuts every few years.) That leaves Sheridan or Ivory, neither of who's film won any of their multiple nominations. Hard to remove either as well, so you may have stumped me, but I'll say replace Sheridan because I remember it the least. As for writing, replace In the Line of Fire or Sleepless in Seattle. I love that Dave got a nomination though. I'm going to watch that now that I've been reminded of it! LOL

Watched Barry Lyndon, for the third time in my life, projected on a large screen, resulting in my best viewing experience of it so far. I find the last half, between Redmond and Lord Bullington to be riveting. I like this movie a lot.

Got a chuckle when I went on Youtube and find a clip of it winning Best Costume Design. The nominees are presented with cringe-worthy dance routines, the winner has an incredibly awkward trophy acceptance. This is also the first Oscar for multi-nominee/winner Milena Canonero, who over the years has gotten her husband Marshal Bell more Oscar airtime than any character actor I can think of.

After a whirlwind weekend of attending all three theatrical presentations of the nominated short films, I have to say there are some amazing offerings this year! ALL of the documentaries are great and I would be hard pressed to pick a winner (perhaps The Last Repair Shop). The animated shorts were perhaps the weakest batch. There I would pick 95 Senses. The two filler shorts they showed to pad out the run time were as good as the 5 nominees, I'd say. The live action set was pretty heavy and depressing (but very effective), and ended with a return to form Wes Andersen short to add a little levity. I'm going to pick Knight of Fortune, since it was able to add some lightheartedness to its heavy subject matter. I thought watching the docs and the live actions films all in one day was going to be difficult but they were so good, the 4+ hours really flew by.

I don't know why I go through this every couple years but whenever I watch Seven Samurai for this challenge, I go to the Oscar Database to search for the film's nominations and I get nothing. It takes me a few minutes to remember that the database has it under the title The Magnificent Seven.

Anyway, I too enjoyed The Last Repair Shopand it will probably win. I can also say I wouldn't be mad if The ABCs of Book Banning wins because it was a unique way to handle the issue. Instead of talking heads, you had actual kids discussing the books and pondering what is wrong with the adults who want to ban books. That was fun.

I love Dave! It is a very tight script. My wife and I still watch it every few years. Give it another chance, popcorn. It may be a little naive given the current state of American politics but it's a well told story.
