DVDTalk's Fourth Quadrennial Leap Day Challenge, 2/27/2024 to 3/2/2024

DVDTalk’s Fourth Quadrennial Leap Day Challenge

Why? - Another Challenge? Are you kidding me? No, sadly, I'm serious. I've always had a fascination with Leap Day and time travel, and the theme segues well into the Action/Adventure Challenge held each March.

What? - Any film or TV episode or short that deals with Leap Day or Time Travel in any way is allowed. Even not really time travel things like Groundhog Day and Sliders can count if you want them too. We’re pretty liberal in this one. Commentaries or alternate versions are allowed, but otherwise each specific item can only be counted once.

When? - We start at dusk, February 27th 2024, and run until dawn on March 2nd 2024. This now expanded time period encompasses the actual Leap Day, the day of either side which sort of substitute for Leap Day for birthdays and anniversaries on non-leap years, and our normal dusk/sunset and dawn/sunrise bonus hours. Anything you complete during these eighty or so hours can be counted. Obviously, there is potential double Challenge credit with our February Romance/Musical Challenge during the most of our time frame here, or on March 1st/2nd with the Action/Adventure Challenge, and during this entire Challenge with the Academy Award Challenge. Obviously lots of potential for triple Challenge credit, and possibly even quadruple credit.

Quadruple credit during our fourth Quadrennial Challenge?! Someone needs to make this happen.

How? - Watch the items on TV, computer screens, in theaters, on your phones, or through direct neural transmission if you are participating from the future. Everything counts as one. No wild cards. No need for a separate list thread. Just create a post in here for your list. Feel free to spoiler it if it’s big.

Where? - Don't you mean, "when?" Discuss the Challenge and your viewings in this, the Discussion Thread. Let's just include our lists in this thread. I imagine we'll only have a handful of participants, so a few lists mixed into this thread shouldn't be a problem. Please keep them spoilered if they get too long to reduce clutter.

Who? - Anyone and everyone is invited. In fact, anyone on this planet that watches a Time Travel related item during this time frame, has participated in the Challenge whether they know of our existence or not. However, one is only eligible for prizes if they post a list in this thread.

In the past we've used the discussion thread as the list thread. It's only ~3 days so lists will be relatively short as will be the thread. I'd say do whichever suits your fancy... I like having the list in a single post so my list post will follow this one...

Re: DVDTalk's Fourth Quadrennial Leap Day Challenge, 2/27/2024 to 3/2/2024

I was going to try to be fancy and update the thread and pictures and maybe even rules tweaks from previous years, but forgot to pre-schedule vacation and will basically miss this Challenge, so lost most of my motivation.

But I am going to try to find something for our quadruple Challenge credit window the night of the 29th.

Here's a 2016 post from coyoteblue that could be handy:

It includes a nice list of time travel movies on the sidebar on the right side of the page.
And an "advance search" at IMDB on "Time Travel" keywords:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?k...=time%20travel

And they've completely redone that search page - it's now horrible and one of those "expanding" pieces of junk - pagination is a far superior method (plus that new page is ugly).

Re: DVDTalk's Fourth Quadrennial Leap Day Challenge, 2/27/2024 to 3/2/2024

Ready for some Time Tunnel and a few movies I found on Prime.

omike's Fourth Quadrennial Leap Day Challenge List

Previous Challenges:
2012
2016
2020
Spoiler:

February 28
01. The Time Tunnel (1966): Devil's Island E:9 (The Time Tunnel Volume One)]Tony and Doug are mistaken for prisoners in 1895 and are taken to the famous prison.
02. The Time Tunnel (1966): Reign of Terror E:10 (The Time Tunnel Volume One)
Doug and Tony run into trouble during the French Revolution and help Marie Antoinette.
03. 41 (2012)* Streaming Prime
A college student is shown a way to go one day into the past and he tries to prevent a tragic accident. Not the tightest plotted time travel story. It's sometimes confusing and doesn't make much sense if you think too much about it but it is a little quirky and a little touching and I enjoyed watching it.

February 29
04. The Time Tunnel (1966): Secret Weapon E:11 (The Time Tunnel Volume One)
Doug and Tony land in a communist country in 1956 and discover a time tunnel being tested. I like this show in general and this was one of the better episodes.
05. Idaho Transfer (1973) (Brentwood Space Quest 20 Movie Set)
A group of young people are stranded in a desolate and deserted future when a time travel project is shut down. They wander around a lot. Very slow and boring. Things happen for no reason at all. The end is stupid.
06. Project Almanac (2015)* Streaming Prime
College students build a time machine based on old plans they discover. It's found footage which I dislike. Tries to explore consequences but that gets lost in teen angst and music video sensibilities. Takes too long to get to the time travel stuff. Maybe not bad but not for me.

March 1
07. The Tomorrow War (2021)* Streaming Prime
Soldiers from the future appear to recruit fighters to battle an alien invasion. I liked this. The characters were appealing, the story was interesting, and the time travel elements worked well. The aliens were typical cgi creatures though, nothing special.
08. Sengoku Jieitai aka G.I. Samurai aka I Want To (1979)
Modern Japanese military forces somehow end up 400 years in the past and team up with a local warlord to conquer feudal Japan. There are some interesting parts and good action but the movie is too long and the plot is very unfocussed. Just OK.

I’ve found at least one quadruple Challenge qualifier, The Sword in the Stone (1963).

A couple more are close, and I didn’t search long, but one is enough to satisfy that quirk for me.

Outlander can count for time travel, romance, and action. No nominations, though.

I might jump ahead in time and start watching stuff now.

I think last time someone did a Rachel McAdams romance/time travel double-count triple feature with About Time, Midnight in Paris, and The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Re: DVDTalk's Fourth Quadrennial Leap Day Challenge, 2/27/2024 to 3/2/2024

While going over possible eligible titles in my mind, particularly double or triple credit items I got to thinking. At first, I was only thinking of the two time travel episodes that I was aware of in Transformers G1. Upon further reflection, the entire series I think could count. The very premise of the show is that the Autobots and Decepticons traveled from Cybertron to Earth 4 million years ago and were only awoken by Mt. St. Helens erupting in 1984.

For double credit with the Romance/Musical Challenge, we’re watching The Muppet Christmas Carol tonight. It’s really a well done adaptation.
