Safe Lists
The following lists are Automatic Safe lists. They are not definitive and there might be exceptions therein, especially concerning Distributors. Generally, the presence of those on the lists in an actual creative capacity (that is, more than just a cameo or bit part. For instance, Bruce Campbell appearing in Spider-Man does not make Spider-Man safe) is enough to make a film safe. Got more? Post them and I'll update the list. Obviously, films not including these participants are safe, too. Update: I added several new names to the actors list. Some of these actors appeared in actual big budget Hollywood fare, but most of their career was in B-Movies, then obviously discard the Big Hollywood movies and just watch the B's (For example, William Shatner. Ignore Star Trek movies but anything else is fair game. Or Patrick Swazye. Ghost is probably not right, but most of his other films were B-Movies).

Re: 15th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2024

I've avoided this challenge for several years because B-movies are my primary area of interest here, and it can be a little hard to figure out what qualifies as a B-movie after the end of the studio system (I consider at least one viewing in a prior challenge kind of embarrassing in this respect). Almost all non-US movies have had B-movie (or less) budgets by US standards throughout film history. However, I have enough that I want to watch now that qualifies, so I'll figure it out.

Sorry for your loss caligulathegod. I don't see the few people that I know who have a similar film interest to mine that often since Covid, but sharing this with my now adult children is important to me, so I get it.

Thank you.

After 15 years, I really don't have the energy to dispute any film. My attitude toward B-Movies is if you understand the concept then have at it. There's no specific line. "Brian Taves estimates that half of the films produced by the eight majors in the 1930s were B movies. Calculating in the three hundred or so films made annually by the many Poverty Row firms, approximately 75 percent of Hollywood movies from the decade, more than four thousand pictures, are classifiable as Bs"

I downloaded and watched and was wondering why there were no women outside the creepy old lady in the mansion... then the shower scene happened... and it was just your average soft core soapy scene, except the young sorority sister was replaced by a chiseled, fraternety jock. I paused the movie and looked it up, and thats when I learned about1313 films. I finished the film, more so cause it still had a creepy element, and not to mention how many times ive seen the reverse, and my gay friends never complained to me. Doing my research, I did see that that film which was 1313: night of the widow, isn't as obvious as others... just seeing a trailer of guys walking around in tighty whities for other films would probably of had me realize sooner.
I've never watched an entire 1313 movie. I stumbled onto one (I think it was Haunted Frat) over a decade ago while trying to find a queer horror movie and made it through 20ish perplexing minutes before moving on to something else. They feel like a throwback to a time before porn was readily available.

My challenge started off rocky. I watched Xanadu and Nudist Life on Sunday night. The former is a fever dream of a movie that kinda bored me. I understand why it's undergoing a reappraisal and I can see myself watching some of the musical numbers, but the main character and the slapdash story kept me from fully engaging. The latter is the worst of the the nudist movies I've watched. I suspect that the filmmakers didn't have enough footage to hit the runtime they wanted so the padded things out with stock footage and a rambling narrative "thesis".

Last night I was watching Kiss Kiss...Bang Bang (1966), the first movie with that title, I think, when, during the caper sequence, one of the television screens in the guard room showed a few seconds of an animation. I knew I had seen it or at least heard of it. I kinda confabulated it Lemonade Joe (1964) initially, so I searched for Czech animated films first, then went, duh, Italian movie and found Bozzetto's West and Soda (1965) shortly. As far as I can tell one of the companies that produced Kiss Kiss...Bang Bang distributed West and Soda. An early example of "corporate synergy"...

Think I'll revisit West and Soda for the Animation Challenge.

My investigations for my previous post have led me to an 80's comedy/fantasy I haven't seen or heard of and there are so few good 80's comedy/fantasies that I haven't seen.. So, I've indulged (bit of a splurge, really). The movie poster practically bashes you in the head with its Eighty-ness.

I watched Back Home (2023), a Chinese film staffing a K-pop singer so heavily 'influenced' by other films it was awful and amazing at the same time. Plots twists made sense only because they were ripped off from other better films but it ended up playing out like a surreal dark comedy (almost a most serious version of Scary Movie with obvious riffs on other films).

To prepare for First Omen I dug up Chuck Norris' Hellbound; now no matter what FO won't be the most awful talky demonic film Ive seen this week (but I have high hopes based on the epic FO trailer). Prosatanos says "welcome to hell.'

I just watched Sextette, Mae West's final film made when she was 84, and what a bizarre spectacle it is! West plays Marlo Manners, the worldf's #1 screen siren, who is assigned to seduce her Russian ex-husband, played by Tony Curtis, for the US government. Sextette falls squarely in the So Bad It's Good category. The cast includes Dom DeLuise and Timothy Dalton, with cameos by Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Keith Moon, George Hamilton, and, of course, a bevy of bodybuilders. You have to wonder how any of these performers agreed to be in this bizarre piece of hagsploitation.

Every time I see modern day Madonna, it makes me think of this. She's definitely at the Sextette time of her career.

Re: 15th Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30, 2024

While channel surfing this afternoon, I found a movie that I never would see on regular tv. Maybe because it was on MGM+ Drive In, but Battle Royale was on this afternoon. I’ve long been a fan of the Japanese gore sub genre, and was familiar with this movie through print. First having seen it listed in a Japanese movie catalog I once ordered, but had never seen it before. I can definitely say that that was a bucket list movie now checked off.
