Re: Address MOD Questions....?
On a personal note, and probably showing me in the minority, I would actually prefer a return to the days of the profanity filter. I believe that some of the turns of phrase we now see within the forums themselves can make the place seem a little threatening, maybe a bit more like the locker room, and could foster a less respectful (or at least a more ambiguous) atmosphere which in turn can lead to arguments, hurt feelings etc. etc.
Just my two pennies!

On a serious note, I think that we need to fix those old ass rules that may be useless or just worded bad. In that I believe that members and mods must come to an agreement on the rules to develop and evolve the culture that was there.
We primarily deal with art here. The rules set now don't properly appropriate the respect for it. I think some rules placed now need to be changed in posting to the ones related to cinema. I'd go in greater detail but it'd be a while.
Also I do agree we need new mods. Fresh blood. People who actually make this site a home for them. There are a shit ton of what appears to near in active mods. How can you moderate a culture if you don't fucking partake in it?
As crazy as it may sound. I'd fucking be interested in being a mod. I mean I'm here all the goddamn time. Probably way too damn much. Damn you all for making me act all serious and shit.

About a week later, I was suspended with no explanation. I think it might have been for that, I cannot think of anything else I posted that would cause a suspension .. but I really do not know. I emailed 3 mods and got no reply, since I was suspended, I obviously could not post to ask.

I'll throw my 2 cents in.
Banned/suspended members thrive on the drama. Not all, but some. Mods will never win if they allow any open discussion for the community to give their opinions. So, I don't ever expect that. What I think is fair is, as someone else suggested, a locked public thread that indicates:
Who just got suspended. How long the suspension is, and a single sentence explaining the infraction. Ie:
SomethingMore. Suspended until June 15th. Wouldn't shut up about his new job at Del Monte.
If the suspension is a sensitive topic, then I'm not sure of the best explanation, but that's for the mods to decide anyway.

Meh. I still think the best way to go about it is to just ensure that all the mods are on the same page in regards to actually notifying the suspended/banned person, and allowing a dialogue to take place if the person is at least level-headed and respectful. We really don't need a public suspended/banned wall.

The rule that we can't discuss banned members makes sense to me, because it certainly would tempt them to return, and because they are unable to defend themselves. A wall of shame would be a bad idea.

I think the rule makes sense with regards to forum members discussing or poking fun at a suspended or banned member after the fact, but I don't see the harm in an explanation from a moderator as to what happened, or someone on the forum asking for clarification regarding the member.
For instance, jabs at SomethingMore about how he deserves the suspension because Del Monte sucks anyway and Dole is better shouldn't be allowed since he can't respond to it, but if someone asked in Feedback "Why was SomethingMore suspended? What's wrong with Del Monte?" the moderator could provide additional reasoning.

I didn't think it'd take that long.
That would be a welcome clarification, as there have been multiple instances of this over the years where this was definitely not the case.

4. One person mentioned that mods shouldn't post in threads so as to not appear biased if they have to take administrative action in said thread. I don't agree with this. Mods were originally posters here. We started posting here because we enjoy this place. If I couldn't post in a lot of threads, I don't see why I would even want to visit this site anymore. The mod pay is tempting, but not really. ![Wink](/images/smilies/wink.gif)

If I'm Party A, I'm likely very upset that Mod watched it all happen quietly until some specific turn of phrase triggered some kind of automatic suspension clause while Party B moves on to whatever highly charged thread comes next.
So it isn't that I suggested Mods not participate in the forum; merely that they recuse themselves from a specific thread if they've been a participant. Any disciplinary action taken could be interpreted as indifference to the role of the un-disciplined party, which is tantamount to an unspoken endorsement of Party B. That's what I proposed, and why.

That was me, but that wasn't what I said. I said that I felt mods shouldn't issue disciplinary actions for threads in which they are participants. I feel my reasoning on that is sound: Parties A and B are in a dispute that escalates. Mod issues disciplinary action against Party A, which may or may not be deserved but Mod was an active member of the thread throughout the escalation and allowed it to get to the point where Party A said the magic word in frustration.

How about that treatment for the OP of this thread, who was suspended for posting an obnoxious and threatening PM? And other than the second PM telling him he was being suspended for posting that PM, he has received no other notification re length of suspension nor any opportunity to plead his case.

I just want to make sure everyone is familiar with this page:
List of Mods and Admins
So you know how to get in touch with us.
There is a link to this page on the main forum page http://forum.dvdtalk.com/index.php called View Forum Leaders.
I actually forgot this page was out there.

That said, I don't recognize a number of those names and think that reflects what we were saying about some mods not being very active around her any more (they could be monitoring and not posting, I realize).

Re: Address MOD Questions....?
VinVega, is that in response to my post? Because the OP is understandably wary of contacting anyone, lest it be viewed as "further" harassment.

A number of folks have already mentioned that we need new mods and it's also been mentioned that the mod team is looking to move on that as we speak.

I sent IBBobi a PM about this issue, since I'm a former IB employee with some insight that most don't have. I want to see if he acts like everyone else from that god damn company and not read or respond to it.

He's replied to my private messages about this. I might not agree with some of the words and actions, but he's been responsive to me which I can appreciate.
