'Freedom: 2' Bound for HD DVD this September
Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 07:55 AM ET
Tags: Disc Announcements, High-Def Anime, Bandai Visual (all tags)
Bandai Visual has announced it will bring the second volume in its popular anime series 'Freedom' to high-def this fall as a HD DVD/DVD twin-format release.
Due on September 25, 'Freedom: 2' will mirror the "twin format" configuration of 'Freedom: 1,' which Bandai first released stateside back in June. Not to be confused with double-sided HD DVD/DVD combo discs, twin-format discs can contain up to three layers of recorded content on a single-sided disc. Like 'Freedom: 1,' 'Freedom: 2' will use two of those layers -- a 15GB HD DVD layer, and a 4.6GB standard-def DVD layer.
Tech specs for 'Freedom: 2' include a 1080p/VC-1 encoded transfer at 1.78:1 widescreen, and Japanese tracks in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM 2.0 Stereo (optional English subtitles are also provided).
Bandai Visual has not yet announced whether any supplemental features will be included on 'Freedom: 2.' However, since the first volume featured a groundbreaking set of exclusive extras, we can hope for more goodies on this follow-up.
Bandai has set a list price of $39.98.

I chose the blind buy to begin with because word of mouth was strong, and Netflix has been treating me like shit recently.

From Michael Bay's official blog comes some news about some of the extras the DVDs will have. As I predicted, there will be two edition, a regular and a special edition issue.
From the blog:
The Transformers DVD...when does it come out you ask. What's it gonna have? What I can tell you is this: there will be 2 versions:
1- A regular version with no extras (just a director commentary).
2.- A multi-disc version with the movie w/ director's commentary and additional disc(s) with tons of extra stuff.
Transformers will also be available on HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats.

Regarding some of Warner's re-releases of their previous combo discs, I find it a bit strange that we get an announcement for a non-combo Superman Returns HD DVD with the same TrueHD track before a BD version with TrueHD and/or PCM tracks. I'm still hopeful it will be available outside of a Pioneer BD player box.

Warner Home Video has announced it will bring the classic Charleton Heston thriller 'The Omega Man' to Blu-ray and HD DVD this fall.
Timed to support the December theatrical debut of the Will Smith remake 'I Am Legend,' Warner will unleash the original 'The Omega Man' on both next-gen formats November 27.
Specs are bare bones, with only a 1080p transfer and the film's original English Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono audio. Mirroring the standard-def DVD version released back in 1999, there won't be a single supplement included.
Warner has set a $28.99 list price for the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions.

Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics Blu-Ray/HD-DVD -> 10/20
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...ay,_HD_DVD/867
HD guru Joe Kane is readying the successor to his popular 'Digital Video Essentials' calibration tool with the release of 'DVE: HD Basics' on Blu-ray and HD DVD this fall.
'HD Basics' follows 'Digital Video Essentials,' which after a lengthy series of street date delays finally hit HD DVD this past April to much acclaim. 'HD Basics' will not only mark the first calibration disc from Kane tailored specifically for the high-def market, but also his first to be released on Blu-ray.
Designed to benefit HDTV novices as well as experienced early adopters alike, 'HD Basics' provides comprehensive and easy-to-use calibration tests and setup instructions for getting the most out of your high-definition home theater set-up.
"My goal with 'HD Basics' is to help make display device setup easier plus describe what I think consumers should expect from high definition,' said Kane. "This new disc allows users to choose the depth at which they want to learn about high-definition -- or simply begin with calibrating their set. While this is not a watered-down version of 'Digital Video Essentials,' I do feel that entry-level support is just as important as providing details for the more experienced users."
For Kane's full comments and further details on the features of 'HD Basics,' you can read the press release in full here.
DVD International has set a October 30 street date for 'HD Basics,' with a suggested list price of $29.98. The company says registered owners of the previously-released HD DVD edition of DVE will be offered a special upgrade price on 'HD Basics.'

The Polar Express Blu-Ray -> 10/30

'The Polar Express' Rolls Onto Blu-ray
August 16, 2007
Warner Home Video has announced plans to release 'The Polar Express' October 30 on Blu-ray Disc.
The Tom Hanks-heavy CGI tale made its high definition debut last holiday season on HD DVD. The Blu-ray version will be presented in an identical widescreen 1080p video and Dolby Digital 5.1 lossy audio, proof Warner does not intend to go the extra mile and add lossless audio on the handful of expected Blu-ray releases already available on HD DVD. Other notable titles already available on HD DVD and awaiting Blu treatment are 'Batman Begins' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.'
'The Polar Express' on Blu-ray Disc will carry an SRP of $28.99. Check back regularly for high resolution cover art.
