I've been wondering that too. So many big announcements have seen some type of chatter leading up to them.

This must have been contained to very few people until the deal was done.

I think combo players will be the rule rather than the exception in the next couple of years. Although, for me, I will never again own another Samsung player after the debacle that was my last one.

Yeah I love my Samsung DLP but I've never been fond of their components.

If Paramount/DW are able to get a boatload of titles out, I may go for the Onkyo player. I'm not too crazy about my A1 or A20 (black level issues), but the Onkyo sounds like a pretty fine player.

Well, does anyone think Bill would go out of his way to announce this until he absolutely has to? It could have meant the difference between a few HD-DVD players sold!...I can't wait to see how he spins this though...and another thing, screw Shrek 3 and The Transformers!...and I don't need one other thing, except my Blu-Ray player and my dog....

After reading about this great news, I went over to my HD-DVD player and gave it a big wet kiss! We are going to be really close friends for a long time now!

Thrice - I didn't mean you in-particular, I meant people in general...sorry if you or anyone else took/read it the wrong way.

I'm totally flabbergasted by the news...we'd heard no rumblings at all about Paramount going exclusive. Sony must have really pissed them off.

This is HUGE news for HD DVD. This is exactly the kind of thing they needed to level out the playing field and turn things around. NOW all they need to do is announce Star Trek (the movies) and Indiana Jones box sets, and the format war should be dead-even again.

"Today’s announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format."

One good bit of news.

At least today's lunch is Teriyaki (my fav), cause I'm seriously bummed...

Actually, that probably just means Paramount isn't going to do any Spielberg releases in the foreseeable future...until HD DVD wins the format war or they're financially forced back to Blu-ray (because it's won the war).

oh yeah, the Digital Bit's HD-DVD naysayers - hahahaha, they already favour BluRay anyway.

I recently sold my HD-A2 (same price I paid for it) as well as all of my HD titles. I had been considering Blu Ray. Now, I am glad I did what I did because who the hell knows who is going to win. And when a winner is chosen, I'll pick up a player on the cheap (again.)

As far as Paramount is concerned, quite the blow to Blu-Ray, without a doubt!

Hope this makes Blockbuster re-consider its move to stock only Blu-Ray discs in its stores.

The whole HDM arena just did, not just Sony.

With this move, both HD formats are doomed to go down in flames like DVD-Audio and SACD. You thought there was consumer confusion before?

Financially, excluding the "rumored" $100 - $150 million payoff, this makes no logical business sense. Why would you throw out the protential to sell an additonal 150 to 200 thousand copies of a monster hit like Transformers? (It's not like this title is going to sell more than 100,000 units on HD DVD as an exclusive...)

Have they not been looking at the sales numbers for major dual format releases? The sales ratio is 2:1 in favor of Blu-ray, not to mention every one of their own titles sells more units on Blu-ray...

I have both formats, and since May I have not bought a single HD DVD since The Matrix, becasue I thought it was time to vote with my pocket book.

I am just dumbfounded by this...

I guess the good thing is that Paramount has not been releasing much on either format, have they even released 40 titles yet? It's not like they're suddenly going to flood the market with product, that has never been their style with new formats.

Having Universal HD-DVD only didn't seem to matter to them.

Who needs Blockbuster? I get my HD-DVD rentals from Netflix with no standing in line!

I thought Blockbuster was part of the Viacom/Paramount family anyway.

This is rotten news. I was all set to spring for a BR player this Xmas, but now with only 50% movie coverage there is just no way. I'll reconsider in Xmas of 2008 if the landscape has changed any. The stupid industry is really shooting themselves in the foot with this whole mess...
