Toshiba HD-A2 + 8 Movies for $211 at Amazon

Here's a great deal due to the Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale at Amazon (thanks to poolrad at AVS). Buy the Toshiba HD-A2 Player + 3 HD-DVDs for $210.93 shipped. Plus, you also get the 5 Free HD-DVD mail-in offer.

The player is $238.88 shipped and you get 3 free titles. Pick three eligible $27.95 HD-DVD discs like 300, TMNT and The Departed. It'll take $27.95 off the total.

$238.88 + $27.95 + $27.95 = $210.93

I don't get it.

This seems like an awesome deal and I want to jump on it but I already own the Xbox addon. Is the A2's PQ really that much better to justify the purchase? I have a 42" 1080P LCD and my add-on is getting 1080p through vga connection. Quick advice please. Thanks!

The Bus you get three dvds free right away with purchase and the system is giving you an extra discount off the cost of the player equal to the cost of one of the dvds, so it brings an extra $27.95 off of the A2 price.

Amazon is giving 3 Free HD-DVD discs with purchase of a Toshiba HD-A2 player. They also have a Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale on certain titles. If your 3 Free discs are also eligible B2G1F titles, it'll subtract the price of one disc.

$238.88 + 3 Free $27.95 Discs - B1G1F $27.95 disc = $210.93

Screw it, went ahead and did it. I'll Ebay the add-on and the value of the eight movies makes this a no brainer even if the PQ is the same.

If you've got the 10% discount it brings it down to $202. Damn, this is almost too tempting but the selection of the 3 movies isn't too great.

You don't have to pick the $27.95 HD-DVD movies. Buying the most expensive discs gives you a better discount. But you could get any 3 of the eligible B2G1F HD-DVD discs. If you choose $19.95 discs, then the price would be $218.93 shipped.

Here's the current list of eligible titles:

12 Monkeys
300
40 Year Old Virgin
Adventures of Robin Hood
Backdraft
Batman Begins
Big Lebowski
Blood Diamond
Blue Planet [IMAX]
Bourne Supremacy
Casablanca
Casino
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Corpse Bride
Departed
Doom
Dune
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Fast and the Furious
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

Mummy
Phantom of the Opera
Pitch Black
Road Warrior
Searchers
Serenity
Shaun of the Dead
Superman - The Movie
T3
TMNT combo
Troy
Unforgiven
V For Vendetta
Van Helsing

I wasn't planning on buying the HD-A2, I already had a 360 add on but this was too good to pass up with the rebate for 5 free movies as well. I'll just use this one on my other hdtv.

I just posted last week in one of the format war threads I wasn't ready to jump in until this thing is a little more decided. Couldn't resist this deal, though! I switched Departed for Corpse Bride and paid $8.00 more total ($218).

I'll now have three DVD players in my entertainment system. HD-DVD, Oppo (keeping there to play DVD-A) and Philips 642 (to play DTS .WAV files since Oppo won't do that). Urgh.

I'm very tempted to bite on this and dump my 360 add-on. Anyone know what the going rate for a used add-on is (minus King Kong, ofcourse)?

I saw this posted over on Slickdeals and wound up getting in on the deal last night in the wee hours in the morning, picked up the Big Lebowski, Shaun of the Dead, and 300 as my freebies (had to pay $7 more but they were movies I want -- Though actually I wanted The Departed more than 300 but figured I should have at least 1 features-rich disc :P), mixed w/ the A2 and 5 movie mail-in and this is one of the better deals I've seen this year.

Well that leaves alittle under a month to decide...

The 5 free titles ends on 9/30. Any idea if there will be a new promotion with new choices?

That's my big FEAR. If they roll out the new players AND have a better promotion, I'm going to be a little upset.

This is a sick deal. I too, would jump here, if I didn't already have the 360 add on.

The only thing I can see making it better is adding more desireable titles or dropping the pick 5 but only 1 in of the 5 boxes with 3 choices crap.

All in all, 8 titles and a great player for around 200 bucks is a steal.
Average the titles being 20 bucks and you are only paying 50 dollars for the player!

I've been leaning HD DVD for awhile, and since it's my birthday next month, I might just take the plunge.
