Blu-ray's viral marketing video campaign (was: I can't stand this kind of crap)

I'm all for high def, and once bluray has the kinks worked out of the profiles I'm sure it will be a good format, but the BDA's marketing makes me throw up in my mouth. Is this kind of mudslinging needed?

i agree. it's extremely obnoxious. and it's not helping the BDA shake the stereotype that Blu-ray is a format for PS3 teenage gamers.

Actually I had planned on buying a Blu-ray player in the not to distant future,
going neutral, but I may rethink my decision after seeing/reading those ads...

So much for winning based on merits.
I can't wait 'til combo players become the norm so this issue will be as moot as DVD-R vs. DVD+R.

"Did you know Blu-ray outsells HD DVD two-to-one?"
"That's why I bought it."
I've never been a fan of the bandwagon sell, although this forum has shown that there are plenty of people who are obsessed with sales figures and consider that a benchmark of quality.
The spots are pretty thoroughly lame, but they're not really any worse than what we saw in the video game market a little over fifteen years ago with the TurboDuo's embittered multipage ads in gaming rags and the whole "Genesis does what Nintendon't" routine. I guess the big difference there is that those ads said something, and these two videos are pretty vapid by comparison, but the tone is similar.
Blu-ray has enough going for it that the camp has things they can tout instead of just saying "HD DVD sucks! Buy Blu-ray!" and letting that be that. Hell, if you want to plug the product and trash the other format, why not just list the higher profile titles coming out in December? HD DVD's anemic release slate mocks itself.
Wearing the moderator hat for a moment, feel free to criticize the ads themselves, but don't turn this into a "pile on the format" or "defend Blu-ray at all costs!" argument. The post upthread reading "Desperate times call for desperate measures" is something I think is just going to spark another argument. Because other 'propaganda marketing' posts have been removed in the past, this one may be axed too, but I'll leave that to one of the other mods.

Two words: ******* lame.
I love my Blu-Ray's, and I love my HD DVD's. This crap is unnecessary and demeans the format.
If the BDA is responsible for these, they should be ashamed of themselves. Both formats should try and win the war on technical merits, not scare tactics.

Why did the guy from the 1st spot buy "the new Blu-Ray player" if he already had a PS3? Maybe he didn't like the HD-DVD's, because he watching burnt-sDVDs on them... this thing is so full of holes

big fucking deal... if i haven't read this thread, i won't even know there are tasteless BD commercials out there. P.S. i didn't even bother to watch the commercials, obnoxious or not, who cares (because the general public don't know this and chances are they don't really care).
Hell, i find the Sopranos hd-dvd commercial is full of it too...
I'm with Adam T, thanks for the info and move on...

It seems that of all the companies, Disney is the best. Above all the other studios, they push their BD product just as hard as the DVD counterpart. They treat their releases with care and dignity.
Shame they are "associated" with this kind of drivel.

They're pretty lame, but I'm having a hard time seeing how someone could get so offended by them it would change their purchasing decision. Isn't this what companies always do?

I agree that most consumers won't be so offended by them to a point where their purchasing decision is changed. I know I'm still buying a Blu-ray player once it becomes more affordable to me (I already own Blu-ray movies in anticipation of my hardware purchase).

I find the video very funny (junk closet) the guy is putting a reel to reel, 8-track player, LD player, and beta machine are all Sony's old stuff. I bet we will see the PS3 in there in no time. Why didn't they put a minidisc player in there? Before I get bitched at...I have a PS3 and an HD DVD player.
