Maybe if you include PC-gamers, but still, public perception (not limited to the age 10-30 bracket) of video games and dedicated game systems such as XBox 360 and PS3 is that they are, in fact, expensive toys. That's one reason why there's such indignation among the general populace about the high price tag, and certainly a reason why the PS3 trails other game systems in sales. The high price of what most people consider to be a "toy".

Further evidence of public perception (or misconception, if you prefer) regarding video game systems as "toys" is the ire that is provoked by video games which include graphic violence, bad language, and/or sex/nudity. People regard these systems -- and cartoons, and comic books -- as toys intended for children. High prices and adult content have challenged that perception, but not enough to overcome it.

Where exactly are you getting this "public perception" from?

From those that I've spoken with (far removed from the gaming community and parents), most consider the X360 and PS3 to be entertainment centers moreso than "expensive toys" as you put it, due to their multimedia capabilities. The Wii on the otherhand, yes, that gets slumped in as a toy.

But alas, I'm curious where you got your "public perception" from, as I generally am when people bring it up. Did you go question a random group of 1000 people from surrounding areas? Are you going off the fact a couple lawyers with nothing better to do are throwing a hissy fit?

The fact that the PS3 and 360 are multimedia entertainment centers probably scared off some people to the Wii which is as you say considered a toy. Very good points.

This is a family friendly movie. It's not a movie that gamers typically are into. I wouldn't be surprised if a 1/3 of the 160 sold were to new owners of BD player.

Having not conducted any formal polls, I suppose I'm merely drawing my information from the interaction I've had with other people, which includes a pretty diverse cross-section of ages and interests, as well as my own awareness (questionable as it may be) of current events and popular culture.

Not to mention those who bought an IR device to use a universal remote. Some may have already had the dongle from the PS2.

BTW, I think we need to bring back the VS thread and/or have a sales figures thread for both formats. There's way too much talk of the other format in each of these "dedicated" threads.

This was hardly just a family movie. It was a mainstream blockbuster action flick and definitely appealed to gamers. You make it sound like it was Underdog or something.

But most movies turned games = shit regardless of the system.

I'm not saying that it didn't appeal to gamers but what I'm saying is the majority of the people were not gamers. This is movie is more family oriented than it is gamer oriented.

I would expect The Simpsons to be more of a PS3 "gamers" movie than POTC3...

Nahh. POTC3 is a great popcorn flick that appeals to everyone.
Simpsons will sell well obviously, I would say somewhere around Superbad numbers. Its just not THAT big of an improvement over the DVD.

Regardless, I'll be using my $5 coupon at Target on the Blu-ray tomorrow!

It is a big improvement over SD in both audio and visual departments.

Yup, I just got through watching the Simpsons on Blu-ray and it is a beauty. The colors really seemed to pop off and it gave it an almost 3d look to it. Definitely demo material in my book.

Animation always looks better than live action since the subtle nuances in color are not there, therefore it is easier to digitize and compress. For example, Homer is the same "yellow" across his entire face, but lighting causes several shades across the face in a picture of a real person.

Thats actually why Im less inclined to upgrade my current DVD animation collection to BD or HD.....their just isnt a huge jump in quality imo. Its more evident in live action movies.

It is also why upconversion works better on animation. The extrapolation of the missing resolution in more "accurate" when the digitization is not as complicated.

I was watching The Simpsons last night and then after about 30 minutes, the audio dropped out. This was the first issue I've had with the Panasonic. But after looking at the disc, I saw the reason. It was covered in finger prints. This was a rental from Blockbuster Online. I am planning on finishing it today. If I get the same issue, at least I have the PS3 to try it out.

Someone on AVS found Man of Fire and Sunshine early.

Man of Fire, a Fox title, has 0 extras while enjoying the normal Fox pricing. Another pass from me Fox. It even used a 50GB disc

That coating on Blu-ray discs may be more resistant to scratching, but it really attracts fingerprints, something with which most Blu-ray players struggle.

And it totally blows that Man on Fire will be without extras. It's ridicurous.

I'm less hesitant to wipe fingerprints off of a Blu-Ray than I am an HD-Dvd. It seems like when I simply blow on an HD-Dvd it gets scratched.

I very much doubt it even warranted a 50GB disc. It would have been just fine on a 25GB disc even with some extras. I still wonder if Fox/Disney are getting the 50GB discs cheaper then 25GB disc at least for the time being.

Regardless, I see extras don't matter in this case, but they do on Harry Potter.
