If combos don't cost more, then howcome Blood Diamond (non-combo released in July) sells for $19.99 and 300 (combo released in July) sells for $27.95 at Amazon?

Because:
1) 300 was released several months prior to HP5 -- back when WB did indeed price combos with a higher MSRP.
2) Blood Diamond was released on HD DVD two or three months after its SD release, apparently qualifying it as a catalogue title, thus reducing the MSRP.

I'm not sure why you are comparing the price to a Blu-Ray to say that they don't cost more. When we say we don't like combos because they cost more, we mean because they cost more than a non-combo title from the same studio.

AVS Insider David Vaughn said again today that the decision to back one format would be made on the corporate level of Time Warner. It WILL NOT be made on the studio level. I believe this guy. So any denials from studio execs should be disregarded. Of course, he failed to mention when this would happen, although a few weeks ago, he did say it could certainly happen at CES, which is this weekend.

I fear the decision may have already been made. Well, for now it is pure speculation, but my pre-order for the Blu-Ray version of Assassination of Jesse James was just canceled by the online company cduniverse.com. Not only was it cancelled, but also removed from their site. When I emailed them inquiring as the reason behind it, they replied stating the release is no longer on the studio's release schedule and no longer had a release date. I hope there is another reason behind the delay. I don't mean to assume or fuel any rumors, but as a Blu-Ray supporter, this unexpected cancellation today has me fearing the worst.

Amazon and DVD Empire doesn't have any versions available for pre-order.

anyone pre order from any of the above sites? Anyone ever see a BR listing before?

Could take a day or two to get a reply, but I've sent off an e-mail asking Best Buy why it isn't available on BR. Might not be of any help, but I'm curious.

There was a pre-order page for Amazon a few days ago. I didn't pre-order because the discount wasn't showing up. The page is now gone. HDD still has a link in their pre-orders page.
Amazon did however just put up a pre-order page for the Invasion BD. The HD DVD page was there for a week or two already. The No Reservations page is still there as well.
In the case off TAOJJBTCRF (how's that for an acronym), it seems now that this sku was removed by multiple vendors based on some information from the studio. Maybe the UPC is changing?
I would be surprised if WB would telegraph their exclusivity news by pulling pre-orders now, but stranger things have happened.

Could be a problem on the production line for the title or something. And it would be strange for them to, as you said, "telegraph their exclusvity".

I saw Grubert posted this over on HD Digest. Take a look at the comments from the Time Warner companies. Complete 180 from before. Change in strategy might just be coming one way or the other.
Bob Chapek, Disney
"Our year-end numbers show that studios, retailers, manufacturers and consumers are committed to Blu-ray Disc and its superior technological advancements."
Mike Dunn, Fox
"Every indicator [is] favoring Blu-ray's inevitable success."
"Some of the blowout pricing seen by the other format appears to have been counterproductive, as software sales showed no dramatic increase."
"Blu-ray is 'future proof' technology with the capacity to grow and evolve, rather than the one that faces near-term obsolescence."
"In some parts of the world the software sales ratios are as high as 10-to-1 in favor of Blu-ray."
Steve Beeks, Lionsgate
"We are very confident that 2008 will be, if not a breakout year, then a solid year for Blu-ray."
Steve Einhorn, New Line
"Dueling formats have restrained our ability to launch large-scale, industry wide marketing initiatives"
Kelley Avery, Paramount
"HD DVD has done a nice job of creating an attractive and affordable value proposition and makes a lot of sense for our audience."
David Bishop, Sony
"The installed base is expected to more than double [in 2008]."
"As the format war dissipates, consumer interest in Blu-ray will be spurred to coincide with the increased demand for high-definition entertainment."
"Even in the weeks with the most compelling HD DVD offerings, Blu-ray has continued to win the software battle between the competing formats, going back to December 2006. This continuing 2-to-1 sales ratio leaves little doubt that Blu-ray will win the war in the end."
Craig Kornblau, Universal
"Pricing is critical, which HD DVD is achieving with sub-$199 players."
"HD DVD is cheaper to make, offers a combo disc option for consumers and has fewer compatibility issues than other formats."
"The HD DVD companies continue to stand behind our value proposition, which offers consumers a compelling and consistent high-def experience at the most affordable price."
Ron Sanders, Warner
"Unfortunately, the dueling formats created an information logjam in what should have been our conversation with consumers."
