Does size of tv matter?
Hey guys. I'm a noob when it comes to Blu ray. I have a Sony Bravia 37in HDTV. Ive read more than one article saying that a change from DVD to Blu isn't really discernible until its presented on a 42 in tv. Is that true? Or should I still upgrade for my 37 in? Thanks!

On that size set, I believe it's the difference between 720p and 1080p that is not discernible and normal viewing distances.
But for Blu-ray vs DVD the difference is definitely noticeable even on a 37 inch set. My LCD is a 37 incher, and the jump in picture quality could not be more evident.

The jump from 480i/p to 720p is definitely dicernable on a 37" set. 1080p, on the other hand, is pointless below 50".
Also note that seating distance with also have a great bearing on the perceived improvement. Use this tool as a guide: http://www.carltonbale.com/home-thea...er-calculator/ With it you can calculae screen size, aspect ratio, and resolution, relative to seating distance. It also accomodates for calculating rooms with projectors and required brightness, etc. It's a great tool to use.

I keep on telling some of my co-workers who are looking at buying an HDTV, that for around 40 inches, they won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, and they keep on looking at me like I'm crazy ...

I had a difficult time telling upconverted DVD from blu-ray on my 42-in Panasonic plasma. Once I went to a front projection set-up, with a 100-in screen, the difference was night and day - even with a 720p projector.

It really depends. Some people claim to see the difference between 720p and 1080p at 32" while others claim to see no difference between 480i and 1080p at 50". In my opinion (according to my eyes), on a 1080p 37" HDTV:
* You should easily see a difference between 480i and 720p.
* You may see a difference between upconverted DVD (480p->720p) and 720p.
* You probably won't see a difference between 720p and 1080p.
* You should easily see a difference between 480i and 720p.

I've had limited experience with this, but I think the bigger the display the easier it is to notice a difference in picture quality. SD DVDs still look pretty good on more normal size units, but on my 114" projection screen there's a noticeable dip in clarity. So the HD picture makes quite a bit of difference in that instance.
