Saving Private Ryan --> May 4th

Paramount Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the details for Saving Private Ryan: Sapphire Edition, scheduled for release on May 4. This two-disc edition includes over three hours of bonus features that take viewers into the past for a look at the real-life events that inspired the film and behind-the-scenes to explore the challenges of bringing that past to life. The film is presented in 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French, Spanish and Portuguese 5.1 Dolby Digital, along with English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles.

Special features include:

* An Introduction: Director Steven Spielberg discusses his interest in WWII and how it led him to make the film.
* Looking Into the Past: Steven Spielberg explains the research done for the film, the evolution of the screenplay and his intentions.
* Miller and his Platoon: Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and other cast members introduce the different characters and how the actors worked together.
* Boot Camp: Memories from the cast about the intense boot camp they went through with Captain Dale Dye.
* Making Saving Private Ryan: Steven Spielberg and his collaborators discuss the look of the film, the production design, the costumes and the photography.
* Re-creating Omaha Beach: A look at how the filmmakers re-created this historical event.
* Music and Sound: Discussion with the team that edited, scored and brought sound to the film.
* Parting Thoughts: Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks share their final thoughts on the experience of making the film.
* Into the Breach: Saving Private Ryan: A 25-minute documentary with the cast and crew.
* Shooting War: Tom Hanks hosts and narrates this documentary on WWII combat photographers in Europe and the Pacific theater of war.
* Theatrical Trailer (in HD)
* Re-Release Trailer (in HD)
The AQ should be ridiculous.

I've not seen this since the orig DVD was released back in the "20th" Century. Even then, it was essential viewing. Gotta agree with Kenshiro on this one. This should be an amazing disc.

Are they going to be remastering this a'la Minority Report? I thought that was the plan for all the Spielberg movies on BD. In any case, I hope they dont Gladiator the transfer.

I'll wait 'til it goes down to about $10-$12.99 like Gladiator and Braveheart did after a few months.

Re: Saving Private Ryan --> May 4th

This is one of the few titles day one pricing doesn't matter. I'll be watching it that evening. I've already purchased this movie 4 times, this will make 5:

VHS to
Standard DVD to
DTS DVD
"upgraded" to the special box set not realizing I was losing the DTS sound.

Don't own this, and I've never seen it. I guess Blu-ray would be a great way to watch it for the first time.

I got amped up enough about this to watch my SD again. I can finish it in about 45 min. fast-forwarding to my favorite spots.

This will be my 4th time purchasing SPR. The only difference from you was that I didn't have it on VHS. I am surprised that you say you lost the DTS soundtrack when you go the box set. I got the box set because it had DTS. Did they come out with more than one box set? The set I got had some other DVD with it (that I've since got rid of) and a little booklet. SPR itself was in an ammo box type of case. The identical looking case that was sold separately apart from the box set did not have DTS, only Dolby.

Kory it's a must-have IMO and I think every American should watch this movie. Alot a Americans made the ultimate sacrifice for this freedom we have,we should all "earn it" IMO.
I was a little disappointed that it didn't win the Oscar that year but once I watched Shakespeare in Love I could not argue that it was not worthy of the Oscar itself,that was a great movie also.

It had 2 other documentary titles plus the movie. I though the movie was supposed to have DTS but my copy does not.

The World War II Collection set contains Saving Private Ryan with it's DTS track intact.

Well I got screwed then because mine does not have it. There is no DTS logo on the box or the disc and I just double checked the setup menu to make sure I wasn't mistaken and there is no DTS track, just DD 5.1.
