I saw Titanic once in the theater, and it's been one of my most special films ever since. If Cameron, who believes in 3-D only if done right, is truly impressed by the rendering test they've performed, I'm definitely interested, and will be in the theater once again in 2012.
Likewise, I saw Avatar only once in 3-D, and would love to have that experience again, so I would be completely in favor of it returning to the big screen in an extended cut.
Never seen The Abyss, nor have I ever cared to, but given that I'm a fan of most of Cameron's work, I am curious about it now. Don't expect to buy it, would just like to see it. And, like everyone else, I've been waiting on a new True Lies for ages, so I'm excited that work has begun.
Great things on the horizon.

Great work. Great film. The submersible scene and subsequent resuscitation scene were amazing. And the CGI holds up pretty well, considering it was done 21 years ago.
Will very likely buy it. Just hope they keep the extras from the two-disc DVD. Looks like a lot of good stuff there.

Shit part about HBO showing this,even in HD, it that it's presented only as 4x3. Insult to injury...It's going to take Cameron miracle to restore this one and give it a high quality HD presentation.

HBO aired The Abyss this weekend-- the theatrical cut-- so I got a chance to see it. The print looked bad, as if nothing had been done to it for many years, but was serviceable for my first viewing.

Regarding 3D in general, Cameron said: "We've demonstrated that the 3D market is an extremely lucrative market and this is not a fad."
I'll take True Lies, though. Glad I picked up the DVD a couple years ago, but definitely would like a good version.

Purchasing "True Lies" and "The Abyss" on Blu-ray is a *no-brainer* since neither title ever got a proper DVD release ...
(Although, come to think if it, both of these titles still had a better A/V presentation on DVD than the Original Star Wars Trilogy flicks ... )

I'm not so upset about Cameron doing Titanic in 3D.
The terrible job done on these new releases are the results of putting the film through a processing software that does the 3D automatically and takes like 2 weeks or something. Cameron mentions that it yields bad results and to truly convert to 3D and have it look acceptable it could take anywhere from 6-12 months, etc.
He's overseeing his own films in this regard so I'm okay with it. I do, however, echo the comments of posters that this new trend is disturbing. Not every film needs this conversion process... and it should be a case-by-case thing...

Yes, but some of us see it as akin to colorization. It's not the quality of the process that's the real issue; it's that it's being changed into something it wasn't. Yes, sometimes we have double standards when it comes to sound mixes (if they're done right), but usually we want the image not to be altered.
I don't mind if they do it as long as they continue to make the 2D version of the film available. And, that may mean doing a separate transfer instead of the cross-compatible "one image for each eye" approach, as the conversion process could change the image of one or both eyes. I guess that depends on how it's done.

I asked Jeff Kleist at blu-ray.com if we can expect these Cameron films this year. His response: "I would say that the likelyhood of seeing Cameron films in time for Christmas is high."
I cannot wait to get a hold of True Lies. I haven't watched that in years since it's only available on a crummy non-anamorphic dvd.
In addition to The Abyss and True Lies, I imagine Lowry is finished with their restoration of the first Terminator. I'm sure Fox will have that ready by year's end as well.

Glad to see True Lies is coming to BD at some point, but seriously 3D is getting out of hand. Do we really need a re-release of Avatar? No. Do we really need Titanic in 3D? No. Do we really need ANY film that wasn't shot for 3D to be presented in 3D? No. What's the point of releasing 2D movies in 3D? There is no point. It's pointless.
