Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

Is this set the definitive set of the original series and worth the money?

My mom bought this for me but I dont get it till sept for my b-day. Sucks having to wait. She picked it up on the $150 sale at Amazon a month or two ago for the whole set. Cant wait to dig into each episode like it was the first time ever watching it.

Maybe you should have waited and bought it yourself so you could watch it faster. Then again knowing you will have it in your hands soon is not bad either.

Right now it is around $172 but I hope it drops since I have it saved in my Amazon cart.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

The ability to watch the show with the original effects or new cgi, both in HD, makes this a more or less definitive presentation. I'm surprised Paramount did it, especially since they didn't attempt it with the first HD DVD set.

I would consider anything below $50 a season to be a good buy on this- considering what you get, and what Paramount has asked in the past for this material. The show is a classic and the chemistry between the leads will forever make the material enjoyable to revisit. But it is episodic TV, and for me the hit to miss ratio of individual episodes across the three seasons is just slightly better than average.
There are a bunch of episodes in the first and third seasons I won't ever waste time watching again.
OTOH, the good episodes make up for the clunkers and are the reason I'll never part with my sets.

It is strange the standard dvd set costs $189.49 at Amazon and the Blu-Ray $172.49

Best Buy had the blu seasons on sale for 39.99 each a month or two ago. First thing I've bought at BB in a long time. The show looks amazing.

True but I wouldnt want to spend that much of my own money when I can get someone else to do it for me...

Im more excited to see the newer fx episodes. I havent seen them yet except for 2 or 3 that were on tv a few years ago. They were usually on at 3am here and just never got around to seeing them. So it should be a treat to revisit the show and see all the new added features and extras.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

I'm watching season 1 right now and on the inside cover it lists the episodes for the first 4 discs. Where's the listing for the other 3 discs or am I suppose to guess what episode is on each disc? Paramount makes millions of dollars in profit every year and that can't put a slip of paper inside their blu-rays with an episode listing-----amazing.

Yep, amazing deal given how much Paramount usually drives up the price of Star Trek.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

$39.99 was insane. I was on the fence about upgrading from the dvd sets it seemed like I had only just bought, when they were being discounted to the low $50's. When they hit $40 I couldn't hit the order button fast enough.
That price was also more than $10 less than I paid for either of the two DVD sets.

if it hit that level once, it will hit it again eventually. Probably take a lot of patience, but there might be another good deal come Q4.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

Apologies for knowing absolutely nothing about Star Trek, but will they be releasing any more of these, or do season 1-3 cover the entire span of the original series?

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

I was able to get this during BB's $40/season sale. At the same time I was able to unload my the remastered DVD set at the same price for as much as I paid for it. The extra $20 was more than worth it.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

One question does the picture fill the screen if you watch it on a 16x9 Widescreen TV?

The series was done in the 60's and I hope there are no black bars on the left and right sides of the screen like you get when you watch a Non-HD program on a HD channel on Directv.

I suspect your tv has a zoom function if you feel the need to remove the top and bottom portion of the films frame.

The show was photographed at a 4:3 aspect ratio. It's presented on Blu-ray in that 4:3 ratio, with pillarbox bars.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

So would it better to just buy the standard dvds since those dvds might fill the screen?

Blu-ray is not really high def if you have pillarbox bars on the sides.

I saw a preview for the Gone With the Wind Blu-ray set and it had the pillarbox bars. Not really worth it to buy blu-ray in that case.

Re: Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1-3 Blu-Ray

Jeff, are you kidding? The image IS HD, it just isn't stretched or having things cropped off of it. Shows originally shot in 4:3 should be seen in 4:3. If you really want it to "fill the screen" why not just zoom in on it, it'll cut off some information, but you won't have to deal with the pillarbox bars. Although I don't know why you would do that.
