Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I suppose one of the issues with any BRUCE box is the simple fact that many of the films in it have been widely available and easily accessible for decades — they literally never went away because they were ‘easy’ pickings for every sub-par bargain bin label from VHS though to Blu-ray. I have no doubt Severin will blow all of the prior versions out of the water, and I’m confident that Djeng’s “very interesting” commentary will probably be subtitled and include two or more of the three Bruces in THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE, all of whom I’m pretty sure are still alive (as is the fourth one in that film, I think). In fact, I doubt this set would’ve been as big a priority if those dudes couldn’t have been persuaded to participate in some fashion.

But that said, I’m not surprised that at least one other company has announced a Blu release of one of the films. I suspect there will be more, including from the usual dodgy PD sources.

For those hesitant about what they might be in for with a set like this at the inevitably high Severin price point, I highly recommend searching ‘Bruce Lee’ at Tubi, where you’ll get around 60+ clone movies to skim for free, including a scruffy copy of CLONES. Like I said, they’ve never gone away even though they’ve mostly existed on the home video fringes for decades, and they might also be an acquired taste, like the Godfrey Ho schlock movies that are gradually being reissued over here.

I think is the listing for the Bayshore edition:
Amazon Amazon

The artwork is a pastiche that includes, at the bottom, the ‘Bruce punching out of the ground’ painting commonly associated with BRUCE LEE FIGHTS BACK FROM THE GRAVE (a Korean film shot in L.A.), so I’m kinda curious if this release contains more than one film.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I agree with your point for the most part. But those are all pubic domain releases. There will be more care put into this and improved scans. I like the idea of a curated set with the documentary (which is very good in its own right) that gives you context. Yes, the price point will be higher, so will have to just wait for an annual sale.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Oh I’ll definitely supporting Severin, and I have no doubt that they’ll do justice to these movies (more than they probably deserve in some cases!), but my main point was that they’re up against the very existence of a lot of these titles in the public domain (legally or otherwise) for anyone else to take a crack at. Admittedly the best way to counter that — at least for collectors and martial arts / HK fans— is to put out the most comprehensive box set ever. But unlike with, say, the Emanuelle films or their excellent Steckler and Adamson boxes, the Bruce movies are much more easily accessed by other entities who definitely won’t have Severin’s level of commitment, but will see an opportunity to steal their thunder. I kinda feel like that Bayshore is doing that? Severin probably got the original negatives or something close to them, while I wouldn’t be surprised if Bayshore just cleaned up a good print with no bonus features, so I know where my money will go in the long run. Severin’s box is supposedly Volume 1, though, and at the rate it’s taken to get it done, they might find themselves undercut on subsequent volumes by smaller companies doing passable treatments of the same clone films because of their status. Happy to be wrong down the road!

It kinda reminds me of how Gold Ninja Video up here “discontinued” their THRILLING BLOODY SWORD special edition when, reportedly, Error 4444 got on their case because the title is on their slate for . . . whenever, but Gold Ninja didn’t really drop the title. They just changed the artwork and moved it into a two-pack with REVENGEFUL SWORDSWOMAN. I’ve heard that both GN versions of it sold/sell ok, and I suspect its dodgy provenance has allowed Gold Ninja to keep undercutting Error 4444’s potential sales the longer they take. And to be fair, Gold Ninja’s edition is quite decent (albeit overpriced, not surprisingly), with a 2K scan of the surviving print, ok supplements and a bonus film. And because the film has been available in PD for so long (it’s even on YouTube in what looks like the same print), Error 4444 probably has little recourse other than to make a better version since they can’t really stop anyone else from legally distributing the title, I suspect. Severin could be in the same boat with future Bruce boxes, not that that will keep me from buying them regardless.

HOT SPUR (1968)
Having struck gold with shockumentaries like ECCO and MONDO BIZARRO, producer Bob Cresse and writer/director Lee Frost applied their distinctive sleaze aesthetic to a revenge western they advertised as “91 minutes of Freudian fury!” It would soon redefine the ‘roughie,’ be named one of the Top Ten Movies of 1969 by conservative publication National Review, and become one of the most notorious exploitation films in history. Joseph Mascolo (DAYS OF OUR LIVES), Virginia Gordon (THE ANIMAL) and John Alderman (TRADER HORNEE) star in this infamous Olympic International hit now scanned uncut in 4K from the recently rediscovered negative, with Special Features from the Something Weird archive that include the 1963 Frost/Cresse stripper epic HOLLYWOOD’S WORLD OF FLESH and the 1968 nudie-cutie short THE CASTING DIRECTOR starring Bob Cresse and directed by David F. Friedman.

THE SCAVENGERS (1969)
One year after HOT SPUR forever changed exploitation cinema, writer/producer Bob Cresse and director Lee Frost fused their sex and violence template with the cultural chaos of 1969, then defiled it all in a raw orgy of nihilistic brutality: When a renegade Confederate detachment invades a frontier town, they’ll spark a rampage of sadism, racism, violation and vengeance that still has the power to shock audiences more than half a century later. John Bliss (THE THING WITH TWO HEADS), Maria Lease (LOVE CAMP 7), Bruce Kimball (DRIVE-IN MASSACRE) and Uschi Digard (SUPERVIXENS) star in the final unforgettable Cresse/Frost collaboration, now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative recently discovered in a Paris lab and presented in both its Unrated and R-Rated Release Versions.

LOLA (2022)
It wowed audiences at Locarno, Edinburgh and FrightFest, and won top prizes at Trieste and Sitges. It’s been hailed as “magnetic” (Los Angeles Times), “masterful” (Indiewire) and “deeply disturbing” (Horror Cult Films). Now this “one-of-a-kind gem” (Cinemacy) can be discovered by genre fans everywhere: The year is 1941, and brilliant UK sisters Thomasina (Emma Appleton of THE KILLING KIND) and Martha (Stefanie Martini of PRIME SUSPECT 1973) have created a device that intercepts broadcasts from the future. Besides revealing the coming glories of rock & roll, the invention – which they call ‘Lola’ – also allows them to alter the course of World War II. But will their unmaking of history provoke a lifetime of shocking consequences? Rory Fleck Byrne (THIS IS GOING TO HURT) co-stars in the ingenious debut feature from director/co-writer Andrew Legge that Horror Buzz calls “a bracing sci-fi mind-bender that reminds you why you like movies.”

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

They’ve also got another one called SPIDER LABYRINTH:
https://severinfilms.com/en-ca/colle...yrinth-blu-ray

For more than three decades, the remarkable debut feature – and sole horror film – by award-winning director Gianfranco Giagni has been one of the most elusive Italian horror titles in home video history…until now: When an American professor is sent to Budapest to complete a mysterious research project, he’ll become ensnared in a mind-bending web of sexual provocation, occult carnage and arachnidian havoc. Roland Wybenga, William Berger (FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON) and Stéphane Audran (FACELESS) star in this “invaluable contribution to ‘80s Italian Horror” (Screen Rant) featuring unnerving special effects bySergio Stivaletti (CEMETERY MAN) and an outstanding score by Franco Piersanti (TERRAFERMA), now scanned in 4K from the original vault negative at Cinecittà with a remastered soundtrack and over 4 hours of new Special Features for the first time ever.Special Features:

Disc 1: Blu-ray (Feature + Special Features)
  • Audio Commentary With Dr. Will Dodson, Professor Of Rhetoric And Media Studies, And Ryan Verrill, Host Of The Disc Connected
  • Caught In A Web – Interview With Director Gianfranco Giagni
  • Arachne – Interview With Screenwriter Gianfranco Manfredi
  • All The Colors Of A Spider – Interview With Cinematographer Nino Celeste
  • Smile Of The Spider Woman – Interview With Actress Paola Rinaldi
  • Death In Stop Motion – Interview With Special FX Artist Sergio Stivaletti
  • Web Of The Weird – Placing SPIDER LABYRINTH In The Weird Genre With Dr. Will Dodson, Ryan Verrill And Erica Shultz, Author Of The Sweetest Taboo: An Unapologetic Guide To Child Kills In Film

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Info finally starting to come out...

Djeng also said:
I’m not trying to hard sell this, but Severin’s upcoming Bruceploitation sets (2 volumes. Volume 1 first, Volume 2 later this year) will be their equivalent of the Arrow Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest set, filled to the brim with amazing extras and audio commentary on almost all of the films, plus a great group commentary on our documentary Enter The Clones of Bruce, and the usual Severin snags (hint: Nunchucks). I would strongly advise that you preorder it as soon as it’s available.

And a BIG announcement is coming soon as part of the set’s promotion. Stay tuned!

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Looking forward to these, but sure, he’s not trying to hard sell it yet “strongly” advises you buy it the moment it goes live!!!!!! Surely no vested interest there.

I certainly want these, but while I appreciate their clever marketing tactics, Severin swag is just so much junk-drawer stuff. In one way, they’ve actually helped me consider this set (in a standalone version, if there is one) by releasing nothing I wanted in the last year or so except CEMETERY MAN, which still seems to be in good supply. So if they’re forcing fans to buy the Bruce sets because of strictly limited quantities, I might have to bite. Otherwise I’ll play the waiting game, despite the inevitable temptation once they reveal the extras.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Looks solid. I did notice this bit in their email:

the website exclusive bonus disc of THE BLACK DRAGON VS. THE YELLOW TIGER (1974)
So I’m assuming retailer versions will be 13-film sets instead of 14-film sets, and I’m sure the Severin team will go to great lengths to remind us of that. I’m tempted to hold out for a sale (fingers crossed) but knowing that any versions sold by, say, Grindhouse Video or Oldies won’t be complete is definitely going to be limiting. And the $135 early price isn’t entirely unjustifiable to this HK junkie, considering I waited ages for the Ray Dennis Steckler set to drop to a slightly-lower $110 at a different site. Decisions, decisions.

Great to see that this will include the long difficult-to-see BIG BOSS PART II. The listing says it has burned-in English and Chinese subs, though (unlike all of the others), so I assume they must’ve used the only existing print.

It’s interesting to look at that impressive roster of original personnel that they interviewed for the documentary . . .

• Working At Shaw Brothers – Outtakes With With Godfrey Ho, David Chiang, Yasuaki Kurata, Lee Chiu, Lo Meng, Mars And Phillip Ko

• Bruce Lee And I – Outtakes With Sammo Hung, Phillip Ko, Yasuaki Kurata, Mars, Angela Mao, Andre Morgan, Lee Tso Nam And More

• The Lost World Of Kung Fu Film Negatives– Outtakes With Godfrey Ho, Joseph Lai, Angela Mao, Lee Tso Nam And FIlm Preservationists
. . . and then seeing how few of them participate on the discs for the movies themselves. . Many of them are indeed seniors now, and perhaps there are only so many details they can remember about specific films as opposed to an overall era of their careers better suited to a doc. The discs seem a little too weighted with ‘experts’, but context is context, I guess.

I’ve seen at least seven of the films in the box, most so long ago, and in such inferior presentations (going back to the cheap-o full-frame VHS days), as to be negligible at this point, so it will be nice to see them tidied up, despite their flaws.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

The best price would be what...50% off MSRP? And that wouldn't be for a bit... So $35 difference... not bad for day 1 price + free shipping.

I've only seen a handful of these Bruce clone movies. Are they actually watchable or c-grade martial arts fodder for the most part?

I’d lean toward the latter, but they can be watchable in small doses, spaced apart. Best bet is to test some out on Tubi or YouTube, etc., even in their compromised versions. I think with the context this set seems to have, they could be more enjoyable, but I can’t see many being repeat views. They are what they are, and representative of a unique ‘bubble’ in world cinema.
