Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

About as good (or bad?) as the BLOOD ISLAND films. To me, it's a good kind of bad. And the supplements look to be as helpful as those in the first box.

In descending order for me:

BLOOD DRINKERS : pretty kooky, but fairly stylish.

CURSE: less gory, more story, but still good for its time/country

TORTURE CHAMBER (aka CASTLE OF THE WALKING DEAD): actually a German picture presumably picked up by Sherman's company. Curious to see the quality on this one as there are a lot of garbage versions out there. Good DVD Savant review here.

BRAIN OF BLOOD: It's an Al Adamson picture, so it's pretty awful. Not his worst, but that's not saying much. Sam Sherman's commentary is quite good, though.

Not sure about THE BLACK CAT. I'm assuming it's the regional cheapie U.S. film from 1966, but Severin's details are a bit lacking.

I'm sure most of these are available (in crappy version) on YouTube or wherever for folks who'd prefer to sample first.

This was included in their email:

HEMISPHERE BOX OF HORRORS: Limited, Numbered Edition Available For Pre-Order Now
No word on how "limited" this will be. I'd think they might print less than the BLOOD ISLAND set since these are lesser-known films, but who knows. People did get caught short on that set.

.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I don't remember where I read it, probably FB or bluray dot com, but I believe this set is limited to 3500 copies just like the Blood Island set. Just like that set I've already decided not to purchase as I have previous releases of 3 of the 4 films. Enjoy to those who do purchase though, looks like Severin is pulling out all the stops once again!

Any chance they'll do another limited release of the Blood Island set for those of us who missed it? Seems like the set is still in demand..

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Quick followup on the HEMISPHERE BOX. Apparently it's been selling fast, and is down to 400 copies at their site. Presumably stock at other sites will vary. Even though I got in on the Family Video deal for the first set, I decided to pre-order this one at Amazon just to be safe. Hopefully a better deal pops up before it streets and I can cancel, but we'll see. This set has (arguably) inferior movies, but looks like it will sell out faster than the first volume.

EMANUELLE AND FRANCOISE

NOTE: THIS EDITION IS ALSO AVAILABLE IN OUR SLEAZE IS RISEN BUNDLE AND THE SEVERIN FILMS APRIL BUNDLE.

On the heels of the ‘official’ Sylvia Kristel sequel EMMANUELLE II and a year before his own first Laura Gemser/EMANUELLE film, EuroFilth maestro Joe D’Amato (BEYOND THE DARKNESS) took the entire formula to new depths of depravity: When a cold-hearted stud (George Eastman of ANTHROPOPHAGUS infamy) drives her sister to suicide, Emanuelle (Rosemarie Lindt of SALON KITTY and WHO SAW HER DIE?) plots a seduction that includes sodomy, torture, J&B, lesbianism, cannibalism, meat cleavers and a super-groovy ‘70s soundtrack. Maria Rosaria Riuzzi (IMAGES IN A CONVENT) and Massimo Vanni (ZOMBIE 3 & 4) co-star in this still-extreme sex sickie – also known as EMANUELLE’S REVENGE, DEMON RAGE and BLOOD VENGEANCE – co-written by D’Amato with fellow filth maven Bruno Mattei (SHOCKING DARK) and now featuring a 2k scan from the original negative.

Special Features:

- Three Women and a Mirror: Interview With Actress Maria Rosaria Riuzzi
- The Other Side of the Mirror: Interview With Actor George Eastman

ESCAPE FROM WOMEN’S PRISON

From legendary exploitation producer Dick Randall – whose credits include classics like THE WILD, WILD WORLD OF JAYNE MANSFIELD, THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE and PIECES – comes one of the most strangely depraved EuroSleaze sagas of the ‘70s: When four hardened female convicts escape and take a women’s tennis team hostage, they’ll force the girls into a nightmare of lesbianism, Marxism and murder. Supermodel-turned-porn-queen Lilli Carati (Joe D’Amato’s THE ALCOVE) and Zora Kerova (ANTHROPOPHAGUS, CANNIBAL FEROX) star in this politically charged filth-fest – also known as JAILBIRDS and WOMEN AGAINST WOMEN: A STORY OF SEX AND VIOLENCE – from writer/director ‘Conrad Brueghel’ (aka Italian actor Giovanni Brusadori of EMANUELLE, QUEEN OF THE DESERT), now featuring a new 4k scan of a dupe negative seized from notorious NYC distributor 21st Century Film Corp.

Special Features:

- Le Evase: Italian cut
- Freedom, Sex & Violence: Interview with Director Giovanni Brusadori

DEATH WARMED UP

Three years before Peter Jackson’s BAD TASTE, a young New Zealand filmmaker sprayed international movie screens with brains, blood and bizarre body fluids for the first splatter movie in Kiwi history: Director David Blyth (WOUND, GHOST BRIDE) launched his genre career with this relentlessly graphic – and still-intense – story of mad doctors, nude teens, psychotic mutants, shotgun murders, power drill lobotomies, explosive action and punk attitude that AXS.com calls “weird, wonky and one hell of a ride that will have gorehounds howling!” Michael Hurst (HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS), Bruno Lawrence (THE QUIET EARTH) and Ian Watkin (DEAD ALIVE) star in this landmark gore thriller from “New Zealand’s master of transgression” (Fangoria).

Special Features:

- BLU-RAY EXCLUSIVE: Original New Zealand 4×3 VHS cut
- Audio Commentary with Director David Blyth and Writer Michael Heath
- I’ll Get You All: Interview with Actor David Letch
- Deleted Scenes with Optional Audio Commentary by Director David Blyth and Writer Michael Heath
- Interview Featurette with David Blyth and Michael Heath
- Theatrical trailer
- VHS trailers
- TV Spot

I never thought I'd see Death Warmed Up on Blu-Ray.

Will probably pick it up when it's released.

Before he became NYC’s favorite ‘80s action auteur with hits like THE EXTERMINATOR, THE PROTECTOR and SHAKEDOWN, as well as executive producer of grindhouse classics that included MANIAC COP, FRANKENHOOKER and BASKET CASE 2 & 3, writer/director James Glickenhaus made his feature debut with this bizarre tale of government skullduggery, satanic killings, zodiacal mayhem and messianic horror. Playboy centerfold Monica Tidwell (NOCTURNA) stars in the “ultra obscure and undeniably fascinating” (Fright.com) thriller – also known as SUICIDE CULT and a one-time U.K. Section 3 ‘Video Nasty’ – based on the acclaimed novel by John Cameron, now featuring a 4k scan from the director’s personal answer print and loaded with all-new Special Features.

Jess’ equally legendary partner/muse Lina Romay – here at her most lusciously uninhibited – stars with Antonio Mayans (CANNIBAL TERROR), Lorna Green (MACUMBA SEXUAL), Albino Graziani (MANSION OF THE LIVING DEAD) and even Jess himself in this “fast-moving and slyly humorous” (El Franconomicon) rarity, now scanned in 4k from the original negative with all-new Special Features.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I've long wondered why other companies haven't ripped off the Criterion Closet. At last I'll wonder no more, as Severin has created the Severin Cellar! They even get to pick from the OOP stuff.

Up first was awesome Richard Stanley :

And today's visitor is the likewise awesome Joe Begos:

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

Good lord . . .

AL ADAMSON:
THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION
MASSIVE BLU-RAY BOX SET DETAILS

32 Films On 14 Discs Includes Award-Winning Documentary
BLOOD & FLESH For Unprecedented Celebration Of Exploitation Icon

Severin Films is proud to present the most comprehensive Blu-ray box set ever dedicated to the works of a single genre filmmaker with Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection, featuring 31 remastered Adamson films on 14 discs, plus trailers, audio commentaries, a 126-page book, the 2019 documentary feature BLOOD & FLESH: THE REEL LIFE & GHASTLY DEATH OF AL ADAMSON and more. Exhaustively compiled for the first time ever, Adamson’s ouvre spans a wild beyond belief world of bloody brains, vicious cowboys, naughty nurses, decrepit actors, sexy stewardesses, mad scientists, brutal bikers, Blaxploitation mayhem, kung fu killers and “scenes so SICK the Movies could never show them before!”

The life and career of B-movie maverick Adamson – known for such low budget classics as SATAN'S SADISTS, DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN and THE NAUGHTY STEWARDESSES (as well as his own grisly 1995 murder) – reveals perhaps the most bizarre career in Hollywood history. “Al Adamson worked best on the fringes of Hollywood,” says Severin president/BLOOD & FLESH director David Gregory. “When considering the golden age of drive-in and grindhouse films, he’s truly in a category all his own. It’s an unprecedented legacy that lends itself to what we believe to be the most absurdly compendious box set not only in genre history and – other than Criterion’s Ingmar Bergman Collection – quite possibly the annals of home video itself.”

Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection is limited to only 2000 units. Exclusive Ghastly Bundles purchased from the Severin website will include signed posters, CARNIVAL MAGIC t-shirts, reproduction DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN fangs, SATAN’S SADISTS patches, an authentic repressing of the 7-inch 45rpm single from the theatrical release of THE FEMALE BUNCH and more.

So I was thinking I might be able to pass on this Al Adamson set since I’ve seen most of the films in it and frankly they can be headache inducing sometimes, but then they go and put out this 7-minute trailer. Bastards!

A couple of cool new visitors to the Severin Cellar:

Sean Baker:
(also a Criterion Closet visitor a few years back). Interesting 'bleeped' hint at a Black Emanuelle boxed set, I think, in this one)

Buddy Giovinazzo:

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

That's one's a must! I assume you mean arriving on Blu-ray here? NoShame put out a decent North American DVD back in the day. That appears to be where most of Severin's extras originate, except the new commentary. Got a pretty penny for it figuring this would pop up sooner or later. Severin's also got a cool looking Mrs. Wardh t-shirt available, for those so inclined.

I'm equally stoked for HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND, too. Pretty racy (if silly) stuff even in the U.S. version, so I'm keen to see the original. . I actually have Satan's Slave on an old BCI 'Eastern Horror' disc that I've yet to watch despite buying it about 85 years ago. I can imagine Severin's disc will be considerably better regardless.

More details about the titles from their e-blast:

On May 26th, Severin Films is releasing a hat trick of seminal international horrors: Italian Giallo maestro Sergio Martino’s masterpiece THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDHwith giallo queen Edwige Fenech, the original Indonesian haunting masterpiece SATAN’S SLAVE, and long thought lost German mind melter HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND are all making their glorious high definition US disc debuts packed with bonus features!

THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH
A year before they stunned the genre with ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK, director Sergio Martino, co-writer Ernesto Gastaldi, and stars Edwige Fenech & George Hilton made their collaborative giallo debut with this “incredible piece of cinema” (Flickering Myth) that is “every bit as thrilling as Argento’s best” (Goomba Stomp): Fenech “at her most luminous” (Digitally Obsessed) stars as an unfaithful diplomat’s wife who finds herself hunted by a razor-wielding sex maniac while simultaneously haunted by her own depraved desires. Alberto de Mendoza (HORROR EXPRESS), Cristina Airoldi (TORSO) and Ivan Rassimov (EATEN ALIVE!) co-star in the “daring shocker that set the pace for years to come” (Mondo Digital) – also known as BLADE OF THE RIPPER and NEXT! – newly scanned in 4k from the internegative and loaded with new & archival Special Features.
Special Features:
  • Of Vice and Virtue - Interview with Director Sergio Martino
  • Cold As Ice - Interview with Screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi
  • Vienna Vice - Interview with Actor George Hilton and Italian Genre Historian Antonio Bruschini
  • Archive Interview with Actress Edwige Fenech
  • Introduction By Actor George Hilton
  • Audio Commentary with Kat Ellinger, Author Of 'All The Colors Of Sergio Martino'
  • Trailer
CD Soundtrack (Limited to 3000 units, Blu-Ray edition only)

Audio: Italian 2.0 w/ English subtitles
English 2.0 w/ closed captions

SATAN'S SLAVE
In 1980, Indonesian exploitation studio Rapi Films and writer/director Sisworo Gautama Putra (PRIMITIVES, THE WARRIOR) unleashed the singular chiller that rocked the Muslim nation, transformed the country’s genre film industry, and remains one of the most influential shockers in Asian horror history: While mourning the death of his mother, a troubled teen discovers a nightmare world of restless spirits, supernatural vengeance and occult terror with “an intense creepiness that stands the test of time” (The Jakarta Post). Ruth Pelupessy (THE SNAKE QUEEN) and W.D. Mochtar (MYSTICS IN BALI) star in this “classic from the Golden Age of Indonesian horror” (Monster!) – whose 2017 Joko Anwar remake became an international festival favorite and one of Indonesia’s biggest hits ever – now scanned from the original negative and packed with all-new Special Features.
SATAN'S SLAVE Special Features:
  • Satan's Box Office - Interview with Producer Gope T. Samtani
  • Indonesian Atmosphere - Interview with Screenwriter Imam Tantowi
  • Satan's Slave Obsession - Audio Interview with Remake Director Joko Anwar
Audio: Indonesian 2.0 w/ English subtitles
English 2.0 w/ closed captions

HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND
Produced in 1960 as BODY IN THE WEB, it became a notorious Adults Only feature throughout Europe(though banned in the UK). Three years later and sheared of its nudity, it was repackaged for American audiences as a brain-melting monster movie filled with stripper catfights, skimpy lingerie and radioactive arachnids. Alexander D’Arcy – whose Hollywood career ranged from Leo McCarey’s THE AWFUL TRUTH to Al Adamson’s BLOOD OF DRACULA’S CASTLE – and ‘The German Jayne Mansfield’ Barbara Valentin (BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ) star in “the ultimate exploitation movie” (PsychotronicReview.com), produced by Wolf C. Hartwig of BLOODY MOON and SCHOOLGIRL REPORT infamy. Severin Films is proud to present both the complete uncensored version – scanned from the Düsseldorf dupe negative – as well as the alternate U.S. release – scanned from a pristine low con print – now together for the first time.
HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND Special Features:
  • Alternate US Release Version - IT'S HOT IN PARADISE
  • The History of Spider Island - With Prof. Dr. Marcus Stiglegger
  • Audio Interview with Actor Alexander D'Arcy by Horror Historian David Del Valle
  • Alternate Clothed Scenes
  • Trailer

God help me but after much hemming and hawing I finally decided to order this set from Severin direct. I’ve seen most of these films and have the majority on DVD already, but there was enough new content and not yet on Blu content that I finally caved. I just know that after 3 or 4 discs of this set that I’m gonna regret it! I’ll never learn!

Italian writer/director Umberto Lenzi helmed popular peplums, created extremepoliziotteschi, and invented the Italian cannibal phenomenon. Hollywood actress Carroll Baker was the Golden Globe®winning/Academy Award® nominated star of BABY DOLL, GIANT and THE CARPETBAGGERS. Together in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, they made four landmark films that changed the erotic thriller and giallo genres forever. For the first time, experience the complete Lenzi/Baker collaboration on six discs featuring restored uncensored versions, alternate edits, remastered soundtracks, exclusive Special Features and more.

ORGASMO (1969): In their first startling collaboration, Carroll Baker stars as an American widow who arrives at her late husband’s luxurious Italian estate and surrenders to an orgy of ménages à trois, madness, and murder. Writer/director Umberto Lenzi boldly fills the screen with bourgeois depravity, daring sexuality and unnerving twists for the worldwide hit At The Mountain Of Madness calls “so odd, disturbing and well-made, with that delirious giallo feel that’s like a drug.” Lou Castel (A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL), Colette Descombes (MONIKA) and Tino Carraro(THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS) co-star in this landmark psychosexual thriller – released in the U.S. with extra nudity as PARANOIA and also included here – now scanned from the internegative of Lenzi’s Director’s Cut for the first time on Blu-ray.

Disc Specs for Orgasmo:
  • Aspect ratio: 2.35:1
  • Audio: Italian mono on Italian cut, English mono on English cut
  • Subtitles: Subtitles for Italian audio / SDH for English audio
  • Region A
Special Features for Orgasmo:
  • Director’s Cut
  • Audio Commentary with Film Critic, Author & Academic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
  • US X Rated Version + SDH subtitles
  • Audio Commentary with Mondo-Digital’s Nathaniel Thompson & Troy Howarth, Author of ‘So Deadly So Perverse: 50 Years Of Italian Giallo Films’
  • Giallo Fever: Interview with Director Umberto Lenzi
  • US Trailer
  • BONUS CD SOUNDTRACK: Orgasmo Remastered Soundtrack
SO SWEET… SO PERVERSE (1969): Following the international success of ORGASMO, the second Umberto Lenzi/Carroll Baker collaboration is a kinky retelling of DIABOLIQUE featuring lush Paris locations, trippy flashbacks, a swinging score by Riz Ortolani (MONDO CANE, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST) and an all-star EuroCult cast that includes Jean-Louis Trintignant (THE GREAT SILENCE, THE CONFORMIST), Erika Blanc (KILL, BABY…KILL!), Horst Frank (THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS) and Helga Liné(NIGHTMARE CASTLE). Executive produced by Sergio Martino (THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH) from a screenplay by Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK), this “full-blown classic giallo and one of Lenzi’s best” (B-Mania) is now fully restored in a new 2k scan from the original negative.

  • BONUS CD: So Sweet… So Perverse & A Quiet Place To Kill Remastered Soundtracks Plus Bonus Track: Knife Of Ice (Main Title Theme)

Luis Dávila (EAGLES OVER LONDON) co-stars in this 1970 Italian/French/Spanish co-production – released in Italy as PARANOIA, though not to be confused with the 1969 U.S. re-title of ORGASMO – featuring a taut screenplay co-written by Bruno Di Geronimo (WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?) and Marcello Coscia (LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE), plus edgy cinematography by Guglielmo Mancori(WILD BEASTS) with Aristide Massaccesi/Joe D’Amato (ANTHROPOPHAGUS), now scanned from the original camera negative for the first time ever in America.

KNIFE OF ICE (1972): From its opening Edgar Allen Poe quote to the insane climactic twist, this fourth and final collaboration between co-writer/director Umberto Lenzi and Golden Globe winner/Academy Award® nominee Carroll Baker is “something quite unique” (Gore Girl), with Baker as a traumatized mute being stalked through the Spanish countryside by a black-gloved sex maniac who may be a member of a Satanic cult. Evelyn Stewart (THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH), Eduardo Fajardo (NIGHTMARE CITY), George Rigaud (HORROR EXPRESS, EYEBALL) and Silvia Monelli (YESTERDAY, TODAY & TOMORROW) co-star in this “offbeat and fascinating giallo thriller” (All Movie), now scanned in 2K from the original negative with all-new Special Features.

I was actually proud of myself for resisting this set (even though I first posted the news about it), even a little glad that it sold out at Severin which made it that much easier to resist, and moreso when the similarly-priced Diabolik sold out, and even moreso when prices at various other online retailers proved to be prohibitively more expensive.

Then a couple of days ago I got a completely unrelated email blast from Florida's Grindhouse Video, clicked through on a different title, and noticed that they also still had the Adamson set available for only a couple of dollars more than Severin.

So I bought it. I feel so dirty. So many of his movies are shit, but they're fun shit and this set does seem likely to be the final word on the man's output.

Not the biggest fan of the Lenzi/Baker collaborations, but I have a feeling I won't be able to resist that one eventually.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I’m theoretically on the fence about the Lenzi/Baker set but know I’ll pull the trigger in a couple of weeks anyway.

That does sound like a first rate set at the very least. Kinda nuts that the giallo well dried up at Arrow while Severin has this and Wardh all in the space of a couple of weeks.

Re: The Official Severin Blu-ray Thread

I'm curious about the Lenzi/Baker set because I like Baker and the inclusion of soundtrack CDs is a BIG lure for me.
Not a real big giallo fan, in fact most of the ones I've seen leave me cold, but the time period holds some appeal.

I really wanted the Adamson set too, but it was far too money to roll the dice on something that big, that could be so shot through with QC issues. It's bizarre to me that that kind of proposition could sell out so fast pre-release, let alone in this kind of economic environment. Would still love to see some of that schlock, but I guess I'll need to wait for some smaller sampling sets to be released. I can't imagine a small outfit like would put all that work into the material, just to release it in one configuration.
