Not buying as many NEW BR movies this year...
The past 4 or 5 years, I have picked up around 25-30 new BR (From Movies that were made in that year) per year.
Last year (From the 2011 Movie Calendar) I picked up 31 movies that where released in the Movie Theater.
This year I have only picked up 5 movies so far. Looking through the movies that are coming out the rest of the year in the Theater, I count another 7 or 8 I want to buy.
-Hobbit, Taken2, Les Miserables (I hope this is great), SkyFall, Argo (both my wife and I want to see this one), TDKR...
So, my total NEW BR purchases from the movies that are being released this year comes to only 13 (give or take a couple).
Is it just me or is the movie releases (as a total for the year) not as "Collectable" as years past? There are some clear awesome movies that have come out that I had to buy, but as a whole, this year is not great to me.

I almost never buy new releases, but this has been a FANTASTIC year for catalog titles - besides the usual A+ efforts from Criterion, Masters of Cinema and BFI, Kino has really stepped up their game, Olive came out of nowhere to supply me with almost two dozen new discs, Scream Factory has become the go-to label for horror titles, plus we've been the recipients of multiple great releases from Twilight Time, the massive Hammer collection, Flicker Alley and Scorpion Releasing going Blu, and so on. It was a down year for Blue Underground and Synapse has been silent the second half, but other than that 2012 has arguably been the best year I can ever recall for Blu-ray, and that's not even counting the big guns like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the various Universal releases, mixed bags though the latter are.

I bought The Avengers, and will pick up Moonrise Kingdom at some point. And Dredd. Most definitely Dredd.

I agree the new titles weren't as exciting as the catalog titles:
(the highlights of the year to me at least)
Titanic
Indiana Jones
E.T.
Finding Nemo
Lawrence of Arabia
the remaining Bond films
Hitchcock films ('Dial M for Murder' in 3D ... no less)
Little Shop of Horrors (the musical version)
Patton (remastered)
French Connection (remastered)
Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
Jaws
Rashomon
Evita
1900
The Poseidon Adventure
Quadrophenia
Yellow Submarine

I enjoy going to Chick-Flicks with my wife and we will buy a few every year:
-The Help (Loved the movie)
-Bridesmaids (Died laughing)
-Water for Elephants (Just OK)
-Midnight in Paris (Woody's best in a long time)
This year seems to missing really good date night movies:
-This Means War (Saw it in the Theater on a date with my wife, had fun)

I've only bought one blu-ray this year. Bean the movie. There hasn't been anything else, to me, that's been worth watching more than once.

I've slowed down significantly.
With the prices dropping on Blu-rays so fast and essentially being worthless on the second hand market (worthless i.e. spend $20 and maybe get $5 back for resell) I really pick and choose. Halloween 4 and 5 were $20 a month ago, now $8 at Wal-Mart. WTF?
I did buy The Avengers 3D on tuesday and today I grabbed Porky's from Wal-mart. But all in all...2-3 a month. I remember buying handfuls of them.... With the recent flop of Indiana Jones in terms of sales, I expect that one to be cheap pretty soon.

^ True. It's tough to flip movies any more. I used to buy new, watch, then sell for what I paid or maybe less the cost of a rental. These days that's almost impossible to do, even on the most popular titles.
I'm happy I waited on the Indy box too. I just snagged one yesterday, new, from an Amazon seller with 99% feedback for $45. They'll be $30 by Xmas. .....and people were saying in the Indy thread they'd maintain their release day price.

Probably tied for last year in total purchases, but definitely the last great year for new blu-ray catalog titles - the big Spielberg films, Bond, classic Horror and Hitchcock sets, etc. I agree with most here that those releases are far more exciting to me than the new movies. Sure, in following years we'll get better releases and upgrades, but I definitely see myself purchasing far fewer blus... but not because I'm any less a fan of the format.
