I'm sure pretty much anything would benefit from being in 4K, though as I said, I'm sure that a degree of that grainy, slightly ragged feeling when it was blown up from 16 to 35 was part of its aesthetic when many people saw it. Hopefully Hooper will be able to help them in gauging how to do what. This movie so much a product of a particularly analog era that I wonder how it'll look in HD. As we've seen, with the properly deft hand, it's perfectly possible. Hopefully they'll strike a DCP of this and knock it around a few places too, I bet it'd be cool to see on the big screen.

I bought the original bd release recently, and I was impressed with the quality of the image. It was raw looking, yet beautiful in that gritty way and blew away all past transfers of the film I've seen. I no longer yearn to see the Media VHS release again, which I recall looked extremely raw and freaked me out as a kid. That vhs being from a 35mm blow up print probably was the result of that appearance. Thankfully using the original 16mm negative didn't take away from the raw appearance on the bd release and it gets a huge thumbs up from me!

This and the original Last House on the Left are my favorite bd releases for raw, but beautiful image quality. I'm glad they still look rough and rugged with l, yet far more vibrant/detailed than past transfers I've seen and they pack quite a punch.

I have not seen the Evil Dead bd release yet. But I hear it's in the same league quality wise. The only complaint for me is the lack of the original mono mix on that release, which is why I've taken my time 'upgrading' it. That and all the extras from the Ultimate Edition dvd is another issue that's holding me back.

I agree! Switching between the mixes on the current bd release, I found the original mono mix to be superior(despite being heavily compressed). Just sampling the opening credits of the film is a great aural example. The news reports playing during the credits are pulled to the front in the 5.1 and stereo mixes and you can hear the details of the reports clearly. While that's cool and 'new'. The music/sound used during the credits doesn't pack the same punch in the remixes since they're pushed down a notch in volume level and all.

Meanwhile the mono mix, the music/sound overwhelms the sound stage by rumbling just under the surface and then boom, in your face blaring and the news reports get pushed into the background, where you can make out some words, but not follow fully what is being said. This gives it a surreal feeling, since you're catching some of what's being said and trying to listen closely to figure it out, only to have the experimental music/sound overwhelm everything which creates a disturbing atmosphere. And I think that's closer to how it's supposed to be mixed, and if the remixes are 'what was originally intended'. They still could have mixed the opening credits in mono without the news reports becoming mixed in with the music/sound as they were.

So I think it's more of a case of revisionism on the audio mixers part: "Hey, I can't make out everything in these radio reports. I'll try to juggle things around to get it more balanced and front and center."

I hope the newer release will include the original mix. But this time it better be uncompressed. That's the only reason I'd re-buy the film.

I don't know that one. I know the Video Treasures VHS of Sleepaway Camp and the HBO tape of The Evil Dead, saw both of those at an old mom and pops rental joint, but never heard about this one.

That VHS being from a 35mm blow up print probably was the result of that appearance. Thankfully using the original 16mm negative didn't take away from the raw appearance on the BD release and it gets a huge thumbs up from me!
I suppose we'll see when reviews and images start trickling out.

This and the original Last House on the Left are my favorite BD releases for raw, but beautiful image quality.
Also shot on 16mm, I think good old Super 16. Wasm't the Hills Have Eyes BD just a half-assed upscale that they hoped no one would notice?

Glade I hung onto the UE then. Why the hell do the mono tracks never get included? On Blu-ray, the space they'd probably take up is minimal and it's not like they'd require a lot of effort. Why do companies like Fortune Star and MGM not put them on their releases of Hong Kong or Leone flicks or just use dowmixes and think we won't notice? It's beyond me. How hard can it be? You'd think making a remix would be a lot more work.

Even though having no sound system worth a damn probably makes me biased, I always prefer the original mono. If that's how it sounded when it was originally released, that's how I'd like to hear it now.

So I think it's more of a case of revisionism on the audio mixers part: "Hey, I can't make out everything in these radio reports. I'll try to juggle things around to get it more balanced and front and center."
I think that lots of directors who get a hold of new technology get similar revisionist mindsets too. IMO, digital makes it so much easier that I do think there's a "because they can" factor which has been influencing more and more directors-Cameron, Hill, Mann, etc.-to do it as well. But it probably is one the production end too. Back to the old "projectionist as part of the experience" type argument.

I hope the newer release will include the original mix. But this time it better be uncompressed. That's the only reason I'd re-buy the film.
I wonder why it was compressed on the first BD. Was it only a 25GB?

Promising. Hopefully other comments will likely be promising and this will be what the fans had been hoping for. And hopefully the DCP will do the rounds too!

Not a huge fan of the film but if they are going to put all this work into it; I simply must buy it to support them so other films get the same treatment. I am sure the one blu that I buy will be the tipping point...

I am shocked that it is playing here in Tulsa, OK. When these special showings are announced they usually forget Oklahoma exists.

Yeah, just called my brother to let him know it is playing and he is excited too. The Beatles A Hard Day's Night is playing the week before. Screaming teens one week followed by annoying teens getting murdered the next.

We got the mono last time too. That was good.

It's funny. I am not a particularly grand fan of the film but I do enjoy it. It really does disturb me a bit as it is just cuz the way they made it. Dirty, innovative, and just blunt horror.

Looks great. Wonder how many minutes of new deleted scenes there are. Despite 1080p, I wonder how the quality will end up being (assuming of course they were recently unearthed from a musty barn in Texas).

Weird to release an edition with two DVD's. Usually it's just the film on the included DVD disc and no extras. I'll probably pick this up though if the price is right. Not my favorite horror film but one that belongs in my collection regardless.

I wouldn't mind a mini version of the chainsaw with a disc holder hidden in the side of the handle area.

"Black Maria" is apparently what's on the door of the semi-truck in the movie. So presumably this limited edition has some kind of model of the semi-truck. Kind of odd.

Confusingly, "Black Maria" is also the (famous) name of Thomas Edison's movie studio in New Jersey.

Pictures have been posted of that set. Looks like it's going to be a Gorgon Video exclusive.

Looks to have all the same material in terms of BD/DVD, so I will probably pass.
