The Stand (finally on Blu-ray) (Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe)
Currently available for $29.99 and a late-September release date. I thought the TV series was good and too bad it was made for television, but I am looking forward to seeing how it fairs on Blu-ray as I have it on DVD and the transfer wasn't so great.

Glad to see this will be on Blu Ray. I appreciate the "Brilliantly Restored" tag at the top of the cover. Especially since the DVDs were so bad.
It would be even better with a digital copy.
The real question is which version will be in the set. There were 2 versions released on DVD with different content.

Warning the link contains spoilers for those that haven't seen the mini series.
Here's a difference I remember and that is not on the DVD version we presently own.

It may be coming out to either get people hyped for the remake coming to CBS All Access (which will have additional content not in the book or this series) or maybe to capitalize on the hype about the All Access remake.

I wish the production value would have been higher but I understand it was the mid-90s when tv was still the red-headed stepchild of Hollywood but I love everything else about the miniseries. It had some truly great casting, which based on the announcements from the new version, already beats it.
I remember watching the miniseries live during the four night premiere and then when it originally hit DVD i watched the entire miniseries and then re-watched the entire series again the next day with the director’s commentary on. I don’t think I’ve ever devoted that much time to a single DVD before or since.

From the look of the series, this looks like a typical 80s/90s tv program that was edited on video.
Wonder if they went back to the original film elements and re-edited the whole thing (though the CGI shots will probably be upscaled) they did with Star Trek The Next Generation.
I already have the Triple Feature DVD with The Stand, The Golden Years, and Langoliers, so this will probably be a pass for me unless the price drops down to bargain bin range.

Some of the casting wasn’t all that (Sheridan and Lowe don’t work for me) but I’m currently re-reading the book, and I can’t read anything that Frannie says without hearing Molly Ringwald. She was the only person for that role.

If the transfer is good I will be picking this up. Be great if it turns out to be the slightly longer version too as I haven't seen that. This is something I've watched a number of times over the years.

A couple of the secondary roles didn’t really work for me like Matt Frewer and Corin Nemec but I thought the majority of main characters worked well. Particularly Sinise and Ringwald. I thought Sheridan was pretty good as a the cool, smooth talking Flagg.

The Artisan Special Edition DVD I have of this is 366 min., the BD Amazon is offering up for pre-order claims 359 min. I wonder if that's correct, if so.....why the shorter version for blu-ray?

Re: The Stand (finally on Blu-ray) (Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe)
See my post above #2 in this thread. There were at least 2 different versions of the series available on DVD. I put a link there which shows most of the differences. It is possible they used the master for the shorter version.

The version on Vudu runs 360 minutes, but on quick inspection appears to be the Artisan version. I.e. it has the artisan logo, the T.S. Elliot quote, all four episode title cards, the unedited Flagg sex scene, including the morning after car scene, the cut to black after part 2 (end of DVD 1) without credits, etc.

Re: The Stand (finally on Blu-ray) (Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe)
I read your post, I accept that there were 2 versions of this movie, my question was: I wonder why they chose (if it's true) the shorter version of the movie for this blu-ray release? You'd think they would want a deluxe version of this for blu-ray, which would have been either the longer version, or both versions (so we can choose) like they have with so many other movies. When you get into a movie of this magnitude and length, what's 7 more minutes?

I wonder if it a rights issue. Or maybe the master for one was in better shape to restore. Or maybe one master was available to restore while the other is lost.

Re: The Stand (finally on Blu-ray) (Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe)
I just started watching this on VUDU and am having a hard time enjoying it. I really wanted to see this back in 1994 but never did. So far, I am through the first two parts and have not been impressed. Does it get any better?
On a side note, this was released 2 months before Forrest Gump. It makes me wonder if Gary Sinise ever brought Lieutenant Dan into The Stand.

Re: The Stand (finally on Blu-ray) (Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe)
If casting today, Matthew McConaughey would lock Randall Flagg up IMHO.
Although for anyone who has read the book, it’s impossible to give an unbiased opinion. I think the mini-series sucks, though it gets some parts right. Still, a fun watch worth more than one viewing, regardless.
Also Big Steve is, ironically, unfilmable, unless you go the Kubrick route, I think.

I've always had mixed feeling about the mini-series but overall it's still worth watching. I find it odd that they never even consulted Mick Garris, the director, about the new Blu-Ray as he's sitting on tons of bonus materials. I'll wait for reviews on the transfer but it would be nice to finally retire the ten year old AVI files I've been holding on to.

Did you see the Dark Tower movie? He didn't rock it and the Man in Black is essentially Flagg... Then again one of the coolest actors on earth failed at Roland so hard to say if it was the director (it was) or the script (it was)...

The actor images from when I first read the book are still stuck in my head.
Stu-Eric Fleming
Fran-Paula Prentiss
Flagg-Rod Steiger
Larry-Glen Frey(70s version with long hair and mustache)
Lloyd-Harry Dean Stanton
Nadine-Kingpin's wife Vanessa from Spiderman comics
Harold-I believe his name is Keith Taylor. Overweight kid with glasses in Star Trek episode "Miri" and Lost in Space episode "Promised Planet"

Well I got through it last night and found it to not hold up with time. I would bet that someone is going to redo it eventually. That seems to be the case with most of King's work.

I want to get this and the new BD of V The Miniseries but not enough to pay for them. I am just not sure they would hold up.

That's because outside of a select few movies (Shawshank, Green Mile, Misery & Stand By Me), most movies based on his work are average at best. So the vast catalog of his movies could stand to have a another director & cast take a crack at 'em.

Yet strangely one of the very best film adaptations was already remade, Pet Semetary.
