Maybe my thread title isn't correct: I mean
"International Users: at which webstore do you buy the most Region 1 DVD's" (or something similar)... Can you edit the title perhaps if you catch my drift???

I used to strictly order from Amazon but I switched to CDNOW for the
following reasons:
- Amazon has DVD's 25% off, CDNOW 30%
- With CDNow you can order 3 DVD's for $7.20 and they ship the first
item in stock, while you pay for $10 for the same number of DVD's at
Amazon without partial shipping
- CDNow doesn't ever give custom problems, while Amazon shipments
sometimes do get caught
- CDNow has 15% off coupons everything widely available while Amazon's
coupons start at $10 off $50 (if you're lucky)
- CDNow usually ships around 5 days before the street date (not that
important, but still nice)
On top of that, Amazon's cst. service is definitely worse than the 'old'
days: I've been 'blocked' from STL without any reason and I hardly get
any useful reply from any question I have for them...
So this all makes me wonder: why does anyone prefer Amazon above CDNow?

CDNow (for the same reasons as exm listed) and ABSound are my two regular haunts (although ABSound is less competitive now that it has jacked shipping costs up, and CDNow has been scaling back discounts and its FFwd program).

I used to order from Amazon but now do so exclusively from CDNow as they are considerably cheaper with 30% (versus 25% tops at Amazon) plus another 15% off coupons plus the 20% discount thru GiftCertificates

Their prices are not the cheapest, but they are in the Amazon's range, sometimes even cheaper. What make them better are two things.
1. The shipping charges. They use DHL Express and if you order up to 7 DVDs, you pay less than $10. That's the same service that Amazon provides, only at least $20 less.
2. Their packaging is unbeatable. No matter how big is the order, I never paid tax. Once I ordered Monty Python's Flying Circus, that's 14 DVDs came in their box sealed (an option I prefer, they can send you the DVDs unsealed or using other methods if you like) and I didn't pay a dime.
Apart that they have their good customer service and fast shipping.
The only problem they have is that you can't preorder films.

In reply to the origonal question, I use DVDboxoffice mostly cos you seem to get a better exchange rate with the Canadian doller than the US doller.
Although you do have to wait that bit longer for your DVD's, but you get what you pay for, and being a tightfisted Scot (ahh re-enforcing those racial steriotypes ) I want to make every penny count.

Its in norwegian though.
We have a list of companies that understand the shipping issues to Norway and relative pricing in Kr. for the discs.
Packages from abroad in value over 200kr taxed, but not only are they taxed, you get charge 1 of 2 separate fees that the goverment uses to determine the tax. Yeah, its that messed up.
Some dvd shippers are aware of this and have special shipping to norway. Forinstance. Rather than shipping the Godfather box set in one package, they will open it and ship it in 5 separate packages so that we can avoid the customs charge.
Shipping charages are not included in the 200kr, which is about 22 dollars.
So shipping cost is a big issue when shipping to norway since we can only order 1 dvd at a time.

GC = Gift certificates.
Some etailers used to offer lots of promotional ones with low or no minimum order values. Others used to offer them as rewards. This meant some very cheap Books/CDs/DVDs.
Nowadays few online businesses are quite so profligate....

Oh Gift Certificates! Of course. Yeah, I used to look for those. buy.com would have a $25 orr $100 purchase and things like that. I used to check bigbigsavings.com before buying and do some major compairisons.

I prefer www.play247.com as well -
shipping is included and no hassle with customs within Europe.
Same is true for dvdboxoffice, but shipment takes very long sometimes. Although sometimes cheaper than play247.
