Bumping this valuable resource and also adding Adventures of Sherlock Holmes UK Granada TV series - all 41 episodes available 2 per disc or in two huge (and hugely expensive) box sets from Japan.

I agree that it is a valuable resource and propose to open up to discussion as to what should be "sticky" later this week: more than three sticky threads tends to create something of a clutter, do it may come down to a vote (or some Darwinian-type discussion!)

Just a quick note that I won't be able to update for a week or so. My computer with my master list on it (which is easier to edit than this one) is in the shop. But if it takes any longer, I'll just go ahead and edit from here.
And on another subject, no one else has any comments on whether or not we should include non-R1 versions of films with proper aspect ratios that are pan & scan only in the US? (Happy Gilmore, Vegas Vacation, Police Academy, etc.)

I sure can't buy and watch everything. But if I'm going to add a DVD to my collection it might as well be the "best" release there is. I haven't been completely successful in that endeavor but I'm trying. For starters, I've been replacing anything that's not 16:9-enhanced (ok, so I still have the original release of a Bug's Life, the kids don't mind).
Anyway, IMHO, first and foremost, uncut, 16:9 and proper aspect ratio. On other specs I'll compromise one disc at a time. For example, the R2-F version of Mulan is 16:9 which I bought but I didn't realize that the video clip was gone!
Let the flames begin!

Last Unicorn in Germany
According to Area DVD "The Last Unicorn" is now out in Germany. It features optional German subtitles and remixed English and German 5.1 sound. The picture is anamorphic.

Pierrot le fou (by Jean-Luc Godard) - a must-have version with a glorious anamorphic widescreen picture (forget about the lame Fox Lorber version). In French, English or German, with removable English or Spanish subs.
Jules and Jim (by Francois Truffaut) - the disc comes loaded with extras, such as the audio commentary by star Jeanne Moreau, 2 lengthy interview bits with director Truffaut about the original novel & the making of the film. Tons of Truffaut trailers. The picture is widescreen, anamorphically enhanced. In French with removable English subs. There are also subs for the commentary and the extras!
Shoot the Piano Player (by Francois Truffaut) - like "Jules and Jim," the disc is filled with extras, such as 2 audio commentaries by star Marie Dubois and DP Raoul Coutard (but no subs for these...), interviews with Truffaut, the screen test by Marie Dubois, and Truffaut trailers. The picture is widescreen, anamorphically enhanced. In French with removable subs (but no subs on extras).

Follow-up to my own post above:
2 Chabrol discs ("Le boucher/La femme infidele" and "Les biches/Juste avant la nuit") are in fact ALL REGION, although the packages claim region 2. They are encoded in PAL, so it might not be that important for most of the US readers, but your computers should play them without a hitch.
Other titles above are region 2.

I found this site while trying to find out more info about 2 R2 German DVDs (US movies not available in the US):
1. "The Scarlet Letter" (the one with Gary Oldman) 2. "Romeo is Bleeding".
I see both on the Amazon.de site but can't tell if they still have the English language track on them or not. Anyone know for sure?
Also, someone mentioned a Japanese "Snoopy Collection" DVD in 9 volumes. Where can I find out more about those? I have almost every version of every Peanuts show issued in the US (the sadly small DVD offerings, a complete collection of the current Paramount VHS, old Kartes, and Hi-Tops releases, plus the really old CED disks). I've also got a handful of Japanese VHS versions of the shows. My username probably explains the obsession with Snoopy.

- Avalon - a Polish made film from a story by Mamoru Oshii (the creator of Ghost in the Shell)... note, this is not an animation

- Himalaya (Eric Valli)
- The Dream with HG Nelson and Roy Slaven - this was a sports show that took place each night of the 2000 Sydney Olympics reviewing the days events and offering (among other things) absolutely hilarious interviews with a number of the athletes
- Best Bits of the Late Show, The - Champagne Edition - another very funny Australian TV variety show, this was the brainchild of the people responsible for the films The Castle and The Dish

@hardtack: Totoro will also be out in November as an official Hong Kong DVD. And I have an RC1-DVD of "The Secret Adventures Of Tom Thumb" by Manga. Or is the Japanese release better in any ways?

I also discovered yet another entry to the list: the *complete* first season tv series "La Femme Nikita" is available in Japan - but not here. There is a rumour that it may be out on DVD here next fall but since they only managed to issue 20 of the 22 episodes of 1st season on VHS, I'm not holding my breath.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I just got my computer back from the repair shop and now I can start updating since I have my master list on my hard drive.
Trigger, the 2-hour Twin Peaks pilot isn't in the box set, unfortunately. I believe Warner Bros. owns the rights to it.
