...my 1999 edition only has a French soundtrack and French subs...

Hi blessthemess,

Hendrik is correct about "Pierrot le fou." The newer version is the one I purchased in September. I'm not sure how it compares with the older version in terms of the image quality, but the newer version is an absolute beauty and looks very vibrant, especially compared with the lame Fox Lorber version that looks awfully flat.

Cynthia, while I am here, I'll list 2 more items (French New Wave DVDs) that I just got from France:

Le beau Serge/Les cousins (aka The Cousins) by Claude Chabrol. They are Chabrol's earlier films that basically started the French New Wave movement in Cinema. Both in French without subs, so you'd better be familiar with the films if you don't speak French (these films are rather dialogue driven). Both in full frame (the original aspect ratio), black & white. A must for any French New Wave fans.

Landru (aka Bluebeard)/L'oeil du malin (aka The Third Lover) by Chabrol again. "Landru" is a retelling of the famous Bluebeard story which features loads of French film stars. On the other hand, "L'oeil du malin" is a great thriller-drama, just like his later masterpieces such as "Le boucher." Again, in French with no subs, but they come with theatrical trailers. "Landru" is in color, while "L'oeil du malin" is in black & white. Both in anamorphic widescreen at 1.66:1.

Well, I think this one qualifies:
Stargate Region 2 (UK)

Additional compared to Region 1:
anamorphic enhanced widescreen version
DTS Surround (in addition to DD)
Audio Commentary by Director Roland Emmerich and Producer Dean Devlin
Trailer
Promo Reel and Photo Gallery

exm,

Unless it's cut, edited or pan & scan here in Region 1, it doesn't qualify for this list.

This is only for films that are "more complete" in other regions compared to the US. I guess extras do add more to the film, but by more complete I mean the actual film being in its proper aspect ratio or uncut.

It'd be great if I could include all the films that have more extras or an anamorphic transfer, but I fear those would get in the way of members seeing the DVDs that are out there, but not available here in region 1.

Maybe someone could make some sort of "best version available" list? I know that would be very subjective and a difficult thing to do since no one has access to compare one DVD from all regions first-hand.

I agree... but then not! If it is ONLY the transfer OR the extra's you would have a point but here's a title with a better image (anamorphic), sound (DTS) and extra's thus justifying a purchase IMO! Isn't the purpose of this list to hint which movies are a definite buy in another region? Just my 0.02....

You have a good point, there. But then we get down to the subjectivity of what's a "must buy." Say a DVD is anamorphic with DTS sound but bare-bones in Australia and that same DVD is anamorphic with DD5.1 and a ton of extras somewhere in Europe. It just depends on the buyer's preference.

I think I'd keel over from maintaining such a list.

But anyone else who wants to is welcome to it.

The extended TV version of David Lynch's DUNE is available in Region 2 Japan (NTSC) and England (PAL). Maybe other regions too... but unavailable in R1.

And that's great news about The Last Unicorn. I'm heading over to Amazon.de to pick it up right now!

Abre Los Ojos

Dear Henk,

In the Netherlands I bought ABRE LOS OJOS with a DTS-soundtrack. It's a pity no anamorphic video.

Another Bunuel film on a French dvd with subs is Los Olvidados. Just like The Criminal Life Of Archibaldo De La Cruz it has English and French subs. The disc is also region 0 and NTSC. The Dvd has a short film or documentary called Land Without Bread wich is about 30 mins and as far as I could tell had no subs.

ScreachingWeasel, what is the language of "Land without Bread"? This is a hilarious short and definitely my favorite. The English-dubbed version is more preferable than the subtitled version (the film only contains a narration), but from your post I assume the DVD doesn't contain any English language?

No English subs or language. I think it was Spanish, but I didn't listen to much since there were no subs. I'll check it out latter today maybe.

ER Season 6 is now available in Japan. Rocky 1-5 is available in 16x9. Network (the movie) is also in 16x9. Ally Mcbeal Season 3 is available or is soon to be available.

Also, for old movie fans: Gold Rush (the 1925 version) in 82 minutes is available (albeit with nonremovable Japanese subtitles) and The African Queen is also available.
