Yi Yi (Starmax), Hana-Bi (Spectrum) - Opinions?
I assume the Starmax version of Yi Yi can't be any worse than the Fox Lorber/Winstar version. How does the Spectrum release of Hana-Bi compare to the R2 versions?

The Starmax version of YiYi is the best DVD available out there...
It is DVD-9, whereas the US and HK DVDS are DVD-5. Since this movie runs almost 3 hours, you can see how that already makes the Starmax DVD the best choice.
I have not watched the whole feature, but opon quick scans, the image is somewhat grainy (which I believe was the way the movie was shown in the theatre), but there is not compression artifacts at all.
The best versions of Hana-Bi are from Region-2/PAL released in UK and France. The French release has more extras. Other than that, the movie itself is the same on both DVDs.

I haven't seen the R2 version but I checked out Spectrum release of Hana-Bi really quickly and it picture looks pretty good. It is only single-layer though. It also comes in a nice looking slipcase with a 56 page booklet .

the R1 of Yi Yi has a commentary by writer/director Edward Chang. i actually prefer it over the Spectrum release for that difference. The R2 French version has the most aesthetically pleasing cover ![Smilie](/images/smilies/smile.gif)

I am far more interested in the movie presentation than any commentary or extras, so the Korean Starmax of YiYi is the best one to me.
Doh! Hana-Bi released in Korea?? Damn.... I prefer NTSC over PAL... oh well....
