Fallen Angels HK DVD???

Fallen Angels HK DVD???
I got the Korean release (Daum Media) of Fallen Angels, and I have to say I really enjoyed the film. The DVD on the other hand, was not so good.
The sound seemed like it was coming from the left side of my speakers, and every once in awhile they would come out of all of them. The picture was real grainy. The subtitles sometimes were just not there for dialog, and at one point a sentence stayed up for like 2 minutes (more than a sentence worth of dialog). There was no menu, but did have chapter stops.
I see that there are 3 releases. (HK, Korean, & Kino). KFCCinema says the Kino is a good DVD, but the subtitles are burned in, and there is "transparent box that goes around the subtitles that can become a small annoyance at times"...
I was wondering if anyone has the HK DVD, and could tell me how it was. Or is there another release I don't know about?

P.S. Now that I've discovered Wong Kar-Wai, what should I see next?

I believe the HK disc of Fallen Angels has been long out of print. The kino may be your only choice right now. It is really depressing the lack of good dvd's for WKW.
Next up I would suggest Chungking Express. It's still my favorite of his films. Fallen Angels was originally a story he was going to do in Chungking Express but left out because of time. The two films are very similiar in tone and style. There is supposed to be an upcoming disc from Miramax for Region 1.
Next I would say Ashes of Time. Try to reserve judgement on it until you have watched it more than once tho. It is very hard to follow and really takes repeated viewings. In my opinion it is well worth it tho. Unfortunately the Mei Ah dvd is pretty horrendous. Got burned in subs with a sub par print. For the moment it's the only way you can get it on dvd tho. Just a quick note of pointless trivia you probably don't care about. WKW got burned out on Ashes of Time, it was taking a really long time to film it. He decided to take a break from Ashes of time and started making Chungking. He wanted to make a quick movie to get him energized on Ashes again. That's what I like about Chungking. The quirky energy of the picture.
If you are wanting a good quality DVD I guess go with In the Mood For Love. The Criterion disc is supposed to be superb but I haven't had a chance to get it yet. I really liked the movie and like all of WKW's films I need to watch it again. I have only seen it once, half asleep at my friend's place. I don't rank it as high as the above three but I did enjoy it.
The Mega Star discs of As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild are supposed to be pretty good as well. That should be plenty for ya.

Kino's DVD of Fallen Angels is pretty good.
The subtitles are player generated, but non-removable.
It does have a gray background, but it's not too annoying....
I like In The Mood For Love the best of his films. The Criterion DVD is excellent, but pricey. If you just want the movie, get the Canadian release by Seville Pictures. Very good quality, at low price point. Stay away from both HK Mei Ah DVDs.

IMHO, the current DVD of Fallen Angels is crap. It's Ocean Shores, so you get their stupid logo in the corner of the screen periodically during the film. The subs are smallish and burned into the print. The aspect ratio seems odd, but I don't know what the correct ratio is. Image quality is not good - barely better than VCD. There's no Dolby Digital 5.1 remix on this disc, but that's not really a bad thing.

I have the Ocean Shores release of this but I've been putting off watching it... I also have Fire Dragon Kid from Ocean Shores and that DVD was allright... I don't remember a logo. Perhaps I'll spin it up and let you know what I think. I'm sure it's sub-par with what's coming out now in HK - probably in line with the older Mei Ah releases.

I got some good information from other people on this forum.
There are now 4 dvds available in the U.S. : In the Mood For Love (Criterion), Happy Together (Kino), Fallen Angels (Kino), and Ashes of Time (CAV).
...5 if you count The Hire BMW series of short films with Wong Kar-Wai's The Follow.
General consensus seemed to me at the time that the Kino versions are slightly better than the HK discs, but the HK version of Ashes of Time was slightly better than the region 1 release, while on the whole none of them were very good releases to begin with.

With that attitude in mind, I ended up thinking that Happy Together had much better picture quality than I was expecting since my expectations were low.
The Megastar (HK) releases of As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild are actually anamorphic.
So, I have the Kino versions of Happy Together and Fallen Angels, the Mei Ah version of Ahses of Time, the Megastar versions of As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild, the Criterion of In the Mood For Love, and have the Miramax version of Chungking Express preordered.
I wisely waited on Chungking Express since the HK Ocean version was P&S.
definitely definitely get Criterion's In the Mood For Love and
Happy Together......not yet having seen Chungking Express, those two are my favorites.
