anyone know if the Japanese horror movie "Ring" is available on DVD? Thanks for any info.

If you are looking for the Japanese film "Ring" on DVD (or its sequels "Ring 2" or "Ring 0") and you require English subtitles (which is a safe assumption), then your only option currently are the DVDs released by Tartan in the U.K. I believe that they are region 0 in this case (meaning that they are not region coded), however they are in PAL format, so you will require the necessary equipment if you are to view these DVDs in the United States.

I believe there are NTSC releases of "Ring" from other countries such as Japan (obviously) and Korea, but none of those have English subtitles.

I have been holding out buying the imports in hopes that some studio (Anchor Bay, Elite?) might release this stateside, didnt I read that someone in Hollywood is considering giving it an US remake (god forbid).

I've seen the Tartan versions of both Ring and Ring 2 and must say that these flicks are extremely overrated....

The Dreamworks remake is directed by Gore Verbinski, and more importantly (to me anyway), starring the lovely Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive). It is currently slated for an October 18th 2002 theatrical release.
Again, it is Dreamworks, and not, say, Dimension Films, so it should be a fairly wide U.S. release.....

So, one would think that Dreamworks (if the home video distribution rights and the remake rights are held by one and the same) would be wise enough to give at least the first film a Region 1 release - just for those few who actually find out that it is a remake and want to see the original.
Of course that is assuming that Hollywood actually owns up to the fact that it is a remake, and doesn't try to pass it off on the masses as wholly American.

I just can't see THE RING as a Dreamworks title....have they ever even made a horror film before?
The Dreamworks website looks like it hasn't been updated in months, so I doubt anyone there could help answer any questions......

If Takashi Miike's AUDITION can get a U.S. DVD release, why not THE RING?

There has already been a remake of "The Ring" available for quite some time - it is the Korean "Ring Virus" and can be gotten on DVD through HKFlix (I imagine they would still carry this title). Not as good as the original, but good none-the-less.

Ring and Ring 2 are both Region 0 and will play in your Xbox (the Xbox will convert PAL to NTSC) if you don't have a multizone player that does the conversion. Ring 0 is a Region 2 disc and won't play in the Xbox. It's not that good anyway... the first 2 are outstanding though.

Cool, I didn't realize Watts was going to be the star of the remake. I might actually check it out in the theater now. I personally didn't care for Ring or Ring Virus but who knows.

Nope - it's a remake... Ring Virus. You're probably confused by the fact that Korea and Japan split the production costs of Ring Virus.

An additional option if you just want to see the movies is VCD -- I got the R2 Ring DVD (before the sale) and thought it was worth checking out but not worth plunking down that much money. I picked up the Ring 2 VCD for around 3 bucks in Hong Kong, which to me was about what it was worth to see.

On a similar note, I'm glad that the Sundance Channel showed "Audition" this month -- saved me the cost of that one as well.

I finally got around to watching Ring, in pretty much ideal conditions (big screen, uninterrupted, all lights off, good sound). Sadly I didn't think too much of it at all. It will make a tempting choice to watch on TV one night in a couple of years but until then I wouldn't go too far out of your way to see it.

Of course, I seem to be very much in the minority on this one. I'm glad so many people love it, but am a bit disappointed i'm not one of them.

I think I should have taken more notice of this original review by the ever reliable Empire UK. They seem to be a lot more enthusiastic abour Ring 0.

I liked Korea's Ring Virus better than The Ring, as I preferred the path taken to the conclusion by Ring Virus more.

I felt Ring 2 was better than The Ring also, as they explored the mystery behind the curse.

Have not watched Ring 0 or Raisen/Spiral.... but looking forward to them....

They are not scare-fest movies... more like chilling tales of the strange! Quite enjoyable....


The Tartan DVDs of The Ring and Ring 2 are way too dark, but the subtitles are pretty good.

Are we ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY sure that the Tartan DVDs are R0 and not R2? I ask this because I now own three of their titles and all of them are R2 even though they're clearly labeled R0 on the packaging.

Well, I've popped Ring into my Xbox and it played. I can't recall if I've tried Ring 2, but I have tried Ring 0 and it's a R2 title. I'll try again if you like.

I couldn't find anywhere here where the Tartan release is compared to the Region 4 release of The Ring. Does anyone know which is better to buy?

If you mean the region 4 release being the Madman release I heard its identicle to Tarten and taken from the same original print

Get the R4. It is still an OK transfer that is pretty much exactly like the Tartan R4.

The R4 has the inclusion of the full (short) "video".. So you could always dump that on a VHS and give it away to your friends.

That makes the R4 superior in the way of content
