Excellent deal if it's legit...
So who's going to be the first to order?

Hopefully their shipping rates are under $130.

An update on experiences with the "fade" subtitles on Star Wars R1 discs. (the subs only show when some space-language is being spoken).

I have 2 dvd players, the all-region JVC xv-500 from HKflix, and a regular R1 JVC xv-s65, about a year old.

As reported in an earlier thread, for Star Wars 1, Phantom Menace, R1, the JVC500 all-region DOES play the fade subtitles.
I used a scene at the beginning of chapter 15, at about 35:00 to check it. To see the subs with the JVCs65, I have to select subtitles from the main menu, and then I can switch them on and off from the remote, but it still doesn't "selectively" only play the fade subs.

For Star Wars 2, Attack of the Clones, R1: Exactly same situation, the JVC500 all-region plays them properly, the JVCs65 doesn't.
I checked a couple of spots at about 5:00 (hologram message), and at about 64:00 (Anakin back in home town).

As I noted earlier, the only thing I don't like about the JVC500 all-region is that there's no "trick" to get rid of the on-screen display while using the "zoom" function, whereas on the older JVC the icon can be switched off from the remote. Not really a big issue for me, because I use the TV's zoom (16x9 Sony) when I want to expand a non-anamorphic letterboxed film.

A last thought --- does anyone know if the older JVC can be updated to play these type of subtitles properly?

Well at least we know what the markup is now. The guy on the other forum bought a couple from them before he posted. Anyways, the QC on the Malatas seem to be pretty piss-poor (more so that the 996). Hopefully, things get worked out... I think I'll get a JVC instead (even though I said I wouldn't). Haven't heard any major complaints about the JVC.

he never had any 520's in stock, the only thing he had was 3600's and he only had 5 of them.

Thanks for the thorough testing. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about the old JVC.

So i'm still experimenting with this problem I'm having with the Malata....since no one knows what i'm talking about or wants to help.

I dunno much about this but the "chroma bug" is coming up in my research a lot. I'm noticing this problem ONLY in the red or brown parts of scenes. I'm REALLY noticing it in Attack of the Clones during the fireplace scene and one of the opening scenes in Palpatine's office. Lots of red/cranberry goin on in the background. It's difficult to explain what's going on but it's like everything is moving and not solid. I hooked up my old player and there's no problem there.

Grrrr...anyone?

Mediamatics doesn't suffer from the chroma bug. This is probably another side effect of the Mediamatics' progressive to interlaced conversion.

You might want to try resetting your zoom control and play the scene(s) again. Any zooming of the image, in or out, can exaggerate artifacts that you wouldn't otherwise notice.

I have recently purchased from HkFix.com both the Toshiba 2805 and the JVC 900.Neither one will play R2 East is East properly. Both players have shimmering through out the movie. The Toshiba player seems to handle the PAL conversion better on other DVD's while the JVC suffers from shimmering on certain discs.

dvd-4-life,
Just wanted to ask if you're using the JVC in the progressive mode, and playing it into an HD tv?
For me, with the JVC500 from HKflix, some shimmering in the R2 PAL version of "They Live" completely disappeared when I switched the player into the progressive mode, feeding into a Sony 16x9 with component cables.

Is the JVC900 a new model from HKflix? Hadn't heard of that one before.

First, if your TV has progressive scan, make sure you use it. The JVC 900 can output progressive, but I believe the Toshiba 2805 is interlaced only.

Second, go to the Mediamatics link in my signature to learn more about these players, the shimmering problem, and what can be done about it.

What makes you say the PAL conversion is better on the Toshiba?

The Toshiba seems to be void of the shimmering except for East is East.Just tried The Shadow-works fine in both players.Having trouble w/Fargo(R2)in the JVC player.I guess both these players are the newer ones that Hkflix have been advertising the last couple of weeks. The JVC player is being played on a 19 in tv and I don't have progressive scan on any tv.The Toshiba player came without the need to switch regions-does it automatically- while the JVC player has to be switched w/the remote even though it seems most region 4 dvds will play in region 2 mode.

What's the aspect ratio for HKL OUATIC?
I was just playing it on my philips and it wasn't stretched like HKL The Killer was.

Does the XV-500 has to be modded to make it region-free or is it region-free out from the factory? Please advise. I am planning to obtain one.

Thanks, Matt.

I was planning to buy one from Crutchfield but I guess that is not happening now. Will stick to my X-box then even though it can only do 480i.

Yes, it does need to be modded. It's a hardware based mod.
