Are any good Vietnamese movies available?
My wife is from Vietnam, came here in early 90's. I want to buy her some movies, maybe with vietnam content.
I know there is a movie called Three Seasons, but I can't find it. She also mentioned something called Cyclo.
Can anyone suggest any other movies? Thanks!

For Three Seasons, there is HK version. It seems that out of print already. You can consider Korean version which has English Subtitle and are All region.
Very cheap - US$5 only. Of course, don't expect for special features. I also plan to get one.
See the link belows:

there's plenty of viet movies in vietnamese. Mostly they are chinese movies translated to vietnamese. You chinatown (if you have one) should have plenty of them.
If you are talking about viet movies made for america, then there's very few and probably your wife would not like them

Cyclo just came out in region 1, but I haven't seen the disc. The movie is amazing though. It's directed by the same guy that made Scent Of Green Papaya and Vertical Ray Of the Sun. All three are great films.

I have heard of "Green Dragon" but I have not had the chance to watch it.
Green Dragon home page
They showed it in the Vietnamese class i am taking but I had to work late that day and missed it.
I don't know about the availability of this film on home video.

I believe the French disc of Cyclo has a better transfer than the one available at DVDAsian. See here: http://207.136.67.23/film/dvdcompare/cyclo.htm
Likewise, the French disc of Scent of Green Papaya is supposed to be better than the R1. See here: http://207.136.67.23/film/dvdcompare/scent-g-p.htm
Best of all, both movies are on the same disc so if you're thinking of getting both, it might make more sense to get the French disc.

Three Seasons DVD is available in Canada, released by Seville.
From my understanding, it is sourced from MGM.
Other good Vietnamese films:
Cyclo (The Hong Kong DVD is pretty good and 16:9)
Scent Of Green Papaya (R1 DVD is fullscreen, French DVD is letterbox widescreen, and includes Cyclo on the flip side)
Verticle Ray Of The Sun (At The Height Of Summer) has a good R1 DVD
In Cyclo, although the lead is played by Hong Kong's Tony Leung, he only speaks in Vietnamese, and is silent most of the time.
regards,
J.T.

Anyway, getting back on topic, you might want track down the documentary of work of Tran Van Thuy. I don't know about DVD availability, but apart from Tran Anh Hung, he seems to be the most widely known Vietnamese director around.
