No worries Giles,

I usually suggest (some) the Euro titles to Mark every month (well, he is a well-educated man so there is no need for me to insist on this one) but I will personally make sure that he has Haneke's film on his "to-offer" list.

Yes, See Ricordati Di Me.....much better than the Last Kiss.

Pro-B,

unfortunately "L'Ultimo Bacio" is the only title by this director available at my local rental store - is it worth it?

And: do those Nicheflix people need more reviewers?

Thanks,

Seb

Summerwine,

if you're in the U.S like me then " L'Ultimo Bacio" (the last kiss) is the only film you'll find becasue "Ricordati Di Me" hasn't been released here and probably won't be anytime soon. Although you can rent from NicheFlix along with many other great titles not available in the U.S.

I think most of us know how much Pro-b like "Ricordati Di me" and for good reasons, it's definetely more mature of the two and boasts some fine actors but if you are looking for a lightweight but edgy romantic comedy and are sick for watching hollywood grossouts then i do recommend "L'Ultimo Bacio."

Frenchy,

I am pretty sure Summerwine said that he (she??) is from Germany.....

As to L'Ultimo Bacio.....well, it is a good film, though nowhere even close to Ricordati Di Me (at least in my opinion). Again though...I was absolutely blown away when I saw it last year so....

There is another one...quite different film....La Finestra Di Fontre which i bought last year as well. It is currently with my brother in Chicago....a film that I strongly recommend. As strong as Ricordati.

Back to the topic.....I am sure you will have a great time with L'Ultimo Bacio......just dont expect an Oscar material.

Have to go now.....

Cheers,
Pro-B

I've seen this film and all of Haneke's prior films (including The Moor's Head, which he wrote but didn't direct).

Time of the Wolf is a hard film to recommend to people as a blind buy, in my opinion. If you have not seen any Haneke, I recommend Funny Games or Piano Teacher to start out -- though they can be quite tense to watch. I screen films at my home every Thursday and FG got the most vocal reaction of a living room audience I've ever heard.

Though I quite like Time of the Wolf you have to understand that I'm approaching from the pov that, in my opinion, Haneke is the greatest living filmmaker we've got. So, it's "weak Haneke" but even weak Haneke kicks the butt of just about any one else out there.

To me, Haneke has only made one film that disappointed: The Castle, which is his take on the Kafka book.

Time of the Wolf is a film that will probably improve with rewatching (Code Unknown has done this for me though I did quite like it the first time thru). It has one of the most stunning and gripping openings of any film in recent memory and it is definitely not for people who don't like to meet a film half way.

Usually i hear these words in an argument about a comic book hero, but well said!!

I definetly agree with you on CODE INCONNU, i have appreciated this film more on repeat viewings, but to me LA PIANISTE remains his best film.

I just recieved my copy from Amazon.co.uk, the Artificial Eye version. Oh boy, what a cinematic experience, there moments when the film feels very Bergmanesque as mentioned above. The beginning of film brought back memories from Funny Games. Yet, it is a completely new cinematic experience, and possible the best post apocalyptic tale I have ever seen. Must mention that is a very subtle experience that cuts into the soul like a burning knife. This film definitely honors my DVD collection...

Cheers

Yes, shocking start.

I have to say I was equally shocked at Haneke giving such an uplifting ending. Or what I see as an uplifting ending (for Haneke).

I knew very little about the film (including making a point of not reading most of this thread), and this attitude paid off because the film caught me out.

FYI

Anamorphic, trailer, English subtitles, "at Cannes" documentary + a making of.

If you like [old] European cinema or just like to have the director ask you questions you won't be asked elsewhere, this film is a must see.

Nice to read your comments on the film. It is a very subtle but striking vision and like Daniel said, with a strong ending.

Did anyone hear about "Caché", Haneke's latest? With Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil - great cast!

YES, I have been keeping an eye on a few sites that usually tend to post info about future films and this one HAS to be great.
Binoche and Auteuil directed by Haneke....should be spectacular!!!!
