The German entry for this year's Oscars (Best Foreign film) will be released on March 17 in...Germany. The film explores the last days of Hitler (Bruno Ganz) and so far has generated some great reviews.
Winner of the Audience Award at the Bavarian Film Awards and a nomination for Best Actor for Bruno Ganz-European Film Awards.

I think the theatrical release wasn't handled well in the USA. If it was released earlier i think it would have won the Foreign Language Oscar, instead of save bet The Sea Inside.
Just look at the reviews it is getting. If Bruno Ganz was an American he would already be the frontrunner for Best Actor, but he probably will be forgotten at the end of the year...
By the way, the movie surpassed Amelie with the most Box Office for a non English/Dutch spoken film here in Holland.
The dvd comes out on April 26th in Holland. It will be 3-disc with an extended cut of the film. Sorry, only Dutch subs.

On a side note this film will do poorly in the States. Just like Non Ti Muovere there is absolutely no buzz that surrounds this production whatsoever. So, your observation is correct!!
Ciao,

ps
I have the German dvd on its way to Chicago. Will report as soon as I get it.

wow - I saw the movie yesterday afternoon and was very very impressed. The story tends to get a tad convoluted at the beginning with the stories multiple characters, but eventually sorts it all out. Ganz portrayel of Hitler is amazing. Technically, the action scenes are impressive with a great Dolby Digital 5.1 soundmix that rumbles with deep bass and effortlessly conveys the intensity of the surrounding war in Berlin.
Highly recommended

Someone at the imdb posted that the German Premium Edition DVD, which was released today, actually does offer English subtitles. This was confirmed in another post also at the imdb.

Question: the film's copyright date at the end of the credits is 2004, right? (I didn't stay to the finale).

Very interesting....and great news!! I ordered without hoping to get the English subs )as no site indicated them prior to the street date). Once I get my disc we'll see.
Thank you for the note Bjackson.

I'm really tempted but the 15.50 Euro shipping charge from Amazon.de is a bit off-putting.
Might "power of the people" work in this case.......I don't know their policies but what if a bunch of us e-mail CD-Wow requesting that they carry this title. Worth a shot?

I am ready to help, no problem. My brother's family already offered to pay me for my copy so an extra one should be just fine (I am still waiting though).
Post the email that we need to use...and let's get it done!

Thank you pro-bassoonist for stepping up to the plate and offering your assistance.
I did send an e-mail to CD-Wow yesterday (after I posted in this discussion). I wrote to "[email protected]" and received an initial response that my request would be forward to their "DVD Dept." since they "are best placed to answer" my inquiry.
I then received a reply from an individual seemingly in that department stating the following:
Hi,
Thank you for your enquiry, we will add this title to our customer wishlist. If we receive further customer requests we may add this title in the near future.
Regards,
I just sent an e-mail to the person who replied with the above. I asked for permission to post his specific e-mail address here in this discussion thereby allowing for our requests to be a more targeted effort. As soon as I hear back I'll post here.
In the meantime, I don't see how it would hurt to direct an e-mail to the general "[email protected]".
The entirety of my initial e-mail need not be re-produced. A short one as shown below should suffice:
E-mail Subject: DVD Query - "Der Untergang" aka "The Downfall"
Dear Sir or Madam:
Will you be making available for sale the DVD for an acclaimed German film entitled "Der Untergang" aka "The Downfall"? It was released for sale in Germany on March 17th and is currently available through your competitor Amazon.de. The DVD is prominently featured on their site. Please note that there are two different versions available - a regular edition, and a 2-disc Premium Edition. I am requesting that you carry the 2-disc Premium Edition as it is the only one confirmed as of this writing to offer English subtitles.
Thank you for your time and cooperation.
Sincerely,
The above should suffice. Perhaps modify it slightly to give it a more personalized look (so it doesn't come off as everyone spamming the same e-mail to them).
