Opening are releasing 3 M.Haneke (The Piano Teacher) films that were previously unavailable on DVD (well, Benny's Video was available in Greece but I have been unable to track it down). The three films are:
Benny's video
Le 7ème continent
71 fragments d'une chronologie du hasard
Street date is October 5th (France).
English subs are no go at this point

Very nice. I'd like to Der Siebente Kontinent (which features some English incidentally).
Haneke's brilliant Das Schloß (The Castle) is also on DVD in France.
Hopefully since someone (with Haneke's involvement perhaps) has went to the bother of releasing these they'll appear fully subbed outside France.

Nice! A while ago I was asked by someone (someone here I think?) for a copy of Benny's Video because they couldn't find it in America. The quality I achieved with my VHS recording and capture card was pretty sub-par, so it's great to see a DVD version being released.

They are all coming in the UK. I don't have an official announcement yet but it seems like the entire boxset/prints was/were ported for UK releases.

A little off topic, but I noticed Haneke is directing/remaking Funny Games for a 2007 release. He's managed to cast Naomi Watts. While I'm sure some will be happy, this pretty much pissed me off like never before. I'm not against remakes per say, but being a fan of Hanake's for all these years I'm a bit upset that I most likely won't see a new/fresh Haneke film until at least 2009 as a result of his directing this remake.

So is the UK special edition definitely the one to get? Dvdtimes calls the image "a disappointment". I'm assuming this is the same as the french release, right (and thus the same as the R1 Kino improper port)?

I've been wondering the exact same thing, and haven't yet found a comparison. It would seem to stand to reason that if Tartan's is a direct port of the French edition, and Kino's is an improperly converted PAL>NTSC port of the French Edition, then the Tartan must be superior.
But there are a number of assumptions in that formulation.

I would take the comment that this is a "disappointment" with a grain of salt (this revewer has not seen the Kino discs). Haneke's early films are not exactly known for being lavishly-looking pieces quite the opposite in fact: ALL of the films in the Haneke boxset have an intentional dull color scheme as well as a very-grainy look during the indoor scenes. Granted I do not own the new SE released by Tartan to make a final judgement I am farily certain that to expect a crisp and shiny image as the one revealed in Cache is unrealistic (the difference in quality here stems from the fact that Cache was shot with a DV-cam). In the French set all three of the Haneke films reveal softness...something which Noel seems to be addressing in his review as well. I think if there is anything one can rigthfully criticize here it is the manner in which the films were transfered...then again, these appear to be native PALs so in my opinion a definite improvement over the KINO ports.
To sum it all up: I believe that there is a slim chance that Funny Games (I also have in mind the upcoming Haneke titles that Kino released that are now set for UK release) will appear anywhere else in the world with a different and "improved" image quality and added English subtitles.
