Tom Yum Goong - any release date yet ??
Like many others I've been patiently waiting for the Tom Yum Goong dvd. There have been alot of rumors but they never seem to pan out. I know the VCD is out, but I'm not really into vcd's. I don't want to pay the $$ knowing full well I'll double dip when the dvd is out. I see ebay has the bootlegs in full force now, so I'm hoping the dvd is just around the corner. Anyone have any inside scoop ??
Cheers,
Jas

www.twitchfilms.net has a link on the front page to some store that's selling a dvd version on DEC 20. I haven't visited the link yet (at work).

I just watched the VCD over the weekend and while the pic quality leaves much to be desired and the fact that it doesn't have english subs I was still totally blown away by the movie. Even thought the plot is exactly like Ong Bak the fight choreography makes up for it. It takes the Ong Bak choreography to an even higher level. Even the nod to Hitchcock's "Rope" is amazing. I've never seen a fight scene filmed this way. Anyways, I know HKL is putting out their uncut R2 version sometime next year; while the Weinsteins are putting out a cut version in R1.

Already geared for the Western market, Tom Yum Goong will be dumbed down even further in re-edits by Prachya Pinkaew. So say some sources who have it from reliable sources.
The new cut of Tom Yum Goong will be for the Western market and will likely snip some of the Thai "in jokes".
But there's worry that some of the percussive bone-crunching sound effects might be deleted as well.
For me, the film was adequate the way it was and needs no further editing to appeal to Western audiences. It should be left alone. Or chucked out entirely. I could go further, but I won't. Not right now.

Tom Yum Goong Uncovered 27/09/05
The Premier Asia film crew spent a wonderful day yesterday as guests of the Baa Ram Ewe production staff in Bangkok, Thailand. For our forthcoming 2-Disc Special Edition DVD release, we filmed interviews with leading-man Tony Jaa, director Prachya Pinkaew, martial arts and stunt choreographer Phanna Rithikrai, co-lead Petchtai Wongkamlao and beautiful co-star, Bongkod Khongmalai. Tony, who kindly donated a day from a holiday visiting his parents, blew us away with a full-on martial arts demonstration which showcased his unmatchable Muay Thai and kick-boxing skills, a series of one-on-one fight demonstrations, and the re-creation of action-sequences from Tom Yum Goong. All coming soon exclusively from Premier Asia...

There is a longer article regarding the Weinsteins buying the rights and hiring the director to do the cuts. I can't remember the site off hand but will post a link when I find it.

Here's a pleasant surprise........after the disappointment of the Hong Kong DVD release not having English subtitles, it looks like the just released Korean DVD of Tom Yum Goong has come to the rescue by including English subtitles. Here's the listing at Yesasia:
"Tom Yum Goong" English-subbed, Korean release at Yesasia

I don't have the disc, but I highly doubt that is has English subtitles. No Korean retailers list it as having English subs, and since evey other release out there doesn't have them, it doesn't make sense that the Korean disc would.
Yesasia has been wrong with their listings before. But then again, I've been wrong too! I'm just saying, don't buy it until it's confirmed.

So did anyone get the Kor R3 yet? I'm so ready to buy this if indeed it does have English subs. Yesasia is only 30 miles from me; I'd get probably see it in my mail in 2 days. Their pretty quick w/ deliveries when it's local.

And that Yesasia listing looks very, very definitive.....see their in bold note at the top of their listing Confirmed: This DVD DOES have English subtitles!. So it looks like Yesasia has already been asked about it a number of times, thus the special note of confirmation. I know places like Twitch had said the Korean release wouldn't have English subs but - as mentioned above - two of the major Korean e-tailers (along with YesAsia) are now listing them. If the DVD was in pre-order status I might be more hesitant but it has actually been released so the listing of English subtitles is likely accurate. I'd bet my Yanks-Sox tickets that this Korean release does indeed have the English subtitles. Glad I had the willpower to hold off on that unsubbed Hong Kong release.
