Is Battle Royale available on dvd?

Does anyone know if Battle Royale(preferrably special edition) is available on DVD and if so, where I can get it? DDD doesn't seem to have it.

Never seen this film before believe it or not.

Not on Region 1, but there's several releases in other regions that are widely available.

Thanks for the quick reply. Why do you suppose it's not out on region 1? It's kind of a mainstream popular title isn't it?

Toei either refused rights or was asking too much for them. So nobody in the US/CAD (R1) has rights to distribute the movie.

The old rumor was Toei didn't want to take responsibility for a movie like this being released in the US of A. I call shenanigans on that, and think they're just asking for a ridiculous amount of money. It'll come out eventually, probably when somebody decides to do a remake.

There is already a U.S. remake in the works planned for a 2008 release. Netflix does have the extended edition for rent and if you have a local Hot Topic store they usually have it for sale. I saw it there a few weeks ago. However, most prefer the theatrical cut; it's just paced better.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but which version would you all recommend? I was going to order Battle Royale, but there were a ton of different versions.

A quick glance at ebay....good grief there's a bunch of different versions! I actually prefer extrended uncut versions of all my films, so I don't mind getting that version.

But is The UK Tin Edition really the best one?

Also what's the deal on BRII?

Hmm, how does the UK Tin version compare to this one?

That looks like the one at Hot Topic. I bought the UK tin back in '02 when Amazon.uk mispriced it for $18. Is it still in production? The extras are cool and do have subs but like others say the theatrical cut is better. I guess it's okay to get both versions; I did. The best one to actually get is the Tartan NTSC theatrical cut but I think it's out of production but I could be wrong.

As for BRII; it should not have been made. It's pretty bad and as far as I know their making BRIII.

yes, my understanding is the NTSC Tartan cut is the best but I can't find it anywhere - not even on ebay!

Yes, the Tartan NTSC DVD is out of print and yes...it's supposed to be the best edition out there.

This movie is not available anywhere on DVD, even if it was available, there would be no way it would have countless DVD releases!
I've got the UK NTSC version of this flick. Awesome video and audio quality.

I've spent the most money on different DVD versions of this movie and Kusturica's UNDERGROUND. I've probably spent a total of $80 on each movie looking for the perfect version.

You want the best dvd versions of the movie?

Then choose the Korean Special Edition dvd for the extended version. It has the best video quality. The UK dvd has a bad NTSC->PAL transfer.
There are two versions of this disc which are most likely identical.

If you want the theatrical cut go for the UK NTSC 5.1 dvd released by Tartan.

If you want the whole package look for the German 5 disc perfect collection. There you'll find both versions of the movie, bonus discs and the original music score in a tin packaging. Unfortunately it has no English subtitles.

All three dvds are out of print.

The Korean box set (which also includes BRII) has bad video quality for the first film. It looks like a NTSC->PAL->NTSC conversion. Also the subtitles sometimes are outside the picture.

BRII was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, regardless of genre. And that is from someone who thinks BRI is a 5/5-star film.

Remember these SAT questions?

If Battle Royale is to Battle Royale II, then which are the following true:
1. Superman is to Superman 4
2. Star Wars IV: A New Hope is to Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace
3. Batman Begins is to Batman & Robin
4. Godfather I is to Godfather III
5. All of the Above

As people have said, the Tartan NTSC edition is the best one to own. In terms of video quality, it's the same transfer as the Japanese R2 NTSC release (unlike what another member said -- it's the same transfer the Japanese R2 NTSC disc has as I've seen both) and it's got great player generated subtitles to boot. Something the Korean and Hong Kong discs do not have. I would never part with the two copies I own of it.

I also own a third copy of the flick -- being the Tartan two-disc PAL limited edition tin set of the Special Version, which isn't as good as the original theatrical cut, but the extras are worth it. The added footage in the Special Version sucks, there's no other words to describe it. Whenever the new footage appears in the film, everything comes to a screeching halt and disrupts the hectic flow of the flick.

And as others mentioned, Battle Royale II is a steaming pile of shit. Granted, the film's first 45 minutes are alright -- but the film's last 90 minutes are pain, torture, and an all around trainwreck.

The only scene worth adding was---

Spoiler:
the flashback w/the crazy chick's mom selling her as a prostitute. No wonder she was so fucked up. The rest of the added scenes were distracting.

How could it be the best when Toei released it w/o English subs or subs for other languages? So, unless one can understand Japanese it's completely useless.

No genuine Toho/Toei release of the film has English subs!
The original japanese dvds of the film are region 2 encoded.

It is like I said:

Best dvds for Special Edition:
R3 Korea SE by Cream
R3 Korea SE by Starmax
Identical in terms of video/audio quality but the Cream version has better subtitles.

Best dvd for Theatrical cut:
R0 UK 5.1 NTSC by Tartan.

Best of the best because it has everything you could possibly want - except English subtitles:
German 5 disc collector's set

Trust me. I have had enough dvds of the film to come to the conclusion that these are the best versions out there.

Beware of the many bootleged dvds of the film!
