I have a region-free Pioneer player and I've never attempted to see if this is really region-free, as I bought the player already modified. I recently had someone lend me a disc to check and see if I can indeed play various regions. The disc sent to me is, The Bloody Judge, starring Christopher Lee and directed by Jess Franco. It has ALL/PAL on the back cover, if that will help with my question. I changed the region setting on the player and played the disc.....it plays fine, sound and picture appear OK, but the cover claims this is a color film and I see it as B&W. Is this a problem with my NTSC TV or with the player and is there something else I need to adjust to see this film in color? As I mentioned, the picture and sound appear fine to me...no lines in the picture and the sound is clear. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may be able to offer.

Your tv is NTSC and the disc is emitting a PAL signal with which your tv isn't comp. I know some Pioneer DVD players let you select the outgoing signal manually. This can usually be done in 2 ways:
1. There's a switch on the back of your player that says PAL/NTSC
2. In the Setup Menu (choose the advanced option) it can be selected.
I suppose your TV is compatible with Y/C signals, since you don't mention to have had problems like this in the past...
Good Luck

Hi Len, my player as far as I can tell doesn't have the switch in the back to choose between NTSC and PAL. I don't see an option for advanced settings, either....I only was supplied with directions to change the region from regions 1-8. Thanks for your reply to my questions!

Hmmm I checked my player
I have a Pioneer 525 (modified). It originally was a rpc2 player.
On the back panel, about 10 cm from the left there is a switch that says:
TVsystem
NTSC PAL AUTO
If it's absent, your only chance is the menu.
About the menu, I was wrong: it's not called advanced.
In the General menu, it says
Setup Menu Mode
- Basic
- Expert
Be sure to have it set to expert, then look at the "video" submenu. Maybe there's an option there. If not, contact your dealer. (Not kidding)
