How many of you or times you have been told to stay away from Discarded DVD material bins or bags, found at the rental stores back entrances or garbage bins/bags.?
About 10 times by different employees, looking for Outside Cover Art and/or Inserts. Latest forage 4 "Chicago" inserts, 1 "We Were Soldiers" insert and 1 "Animatrix" insert for DVD of same name.
Nothing I can use today, but there is always the chance some new employee will throw out, all of what my wheelchair ran over and tore to shreads. LOL

Danol, why don't you go into the store and ask the clerks there if you can have any discarded inserts or wrappers. The clerk may think you're a little strange, but it's gotta be more dignified than having them chase you outta the garbage like a raccoon.

The trash bin at my local BBV has a lock on it. I need some empty amaray cases, but I'm too cheap to shell out cash for 'em when they're throwing them away. Punks.

You can simply ask. When I worked at blockbuster we wereglad to give that crap away since the storage space in the back wasn't to big to fill more then a few copies for future PVing.

Can’t say I have ever been told to go away. I’m not a dumpster diver. Although when I was between the ages of 18-20 I was a Security Guard before I joined the PD. It was my job to rid divers from the back and/or arrest them after a fair warning.

I have never been chased away from a dumpster at blockbuster. I only go to one store regularly, and haven't had a problem yet. I find it is easier and quicker to dumpster dive myself than ask an employee for empty cases and inserts. Some of the employees don't know enough or cannot make the judgement call to give out their "trash",plus I'd have to wait. I'm on a schedule dammit!
I just swing by on Tuesday or Wednesday, and there is usually a hundred or so empty cases in there. Some with inserts, some not. The only insert I've used so far was for Narc, which I didn't have. Sometimes, like last week, they will pack the cases back in the boxes they shipped with and throw the whole box in the dumpster. I scored both boxes of Bringing Down The House last week. About 50 dvd cases easy as pie. No inserts from that though, just the cases.

I've never even thought of that... usually they'll keep stuff a while before tossing them out, may be easier to ask them and maybe leave a number they can contact you at so they can give the stuff to you and save a trip to the bin.

I'm curious, what does everyone want/use a dozen copies of Bringing Down the House cases and inserts for?

danol,
You didn't mention you're from DVD Talk did you? Asking gets you a lot farther than someone seeing the crack of your ass showing out of a dumpster.
I like your initiative though.
