This thread has made me soo angry. I just spent the last 10 mins reading all these ******** thoughts with no reason on Wes Anderson. If you don't like his movies, you should watch them until you do like them; because eventually you will. He is by far my most favorite director, and I find every aspect in everyone of his films brilliant. Come on guys, there is no reason for one to dislike anyone of his movies. You find the Royal Tenenbaums boring? You've got to be kidding me. That movie will always be a classic in my book. I was entertained throughout the entire movie, and there is no reason a real movie fanatic wouldnt be. I can almost read his entire movie after watching it just once. Oh man, WES ANDERSON; if you ever read this....I just want you to know that everyone who doesn't respect your work, really has no reason to; therefore, their views are plain out ignorant and should be ignored. If I offended anyone, I really don't care. If any director out there is overrated, it would have to be Steven Spielberg and his **** films that appeal to everyone until they start to realize how shitty his films really are.

Wes Anderson, he's very loved here, I'd say so is Kevin Smith... and PT Anderson.

Funny, these guys are people who make their films the way they want to. They make them because they like making film, or like telling stories

Film fans like filmmakers who make films like art or stories, instead of just a way to make money.

Doesn't surprise me.

I guess I have a very open taste when it comes to film..... I love all of Wes Anderson's work so far, Royal Tennenbaums is in my opinion a work of pure genius. I also am a huge fan of PT Anderson's films, I loved Boogie Nights & Magnolia and was pretty impressed with Punch Drunk Love though I think it may warrant a few more viewings before I can really draw an educated opinion on it. And I do like Kevin Smith, though not as much as the two former directors, I think Chasing Amy is awesome and his other films are pretty fun to watch if I'm in the mood for a brainless comedy. Not that I'm saying brainless comedy in a bad way, I just mean that the humor is very low brow and sometimes when I'm not in the mood to really think too much I find Mallrats, Clerks, Or Dogma to be just the ticket.

Other directors whose films I usually tend to enjoy are:
Quentin Tarintino
David Fincher
Tim Burton
Stanley Kubrick

I love tons and tons of movies and found Bottle Rocket and Rushmore incredibly tedious. Maybe one snicker per hour of each. They just kept going on and on without anything interesting or funny ever happening. Because of all the rave reviews I kept waiting for the good stuff to come along. Turns out the good stuff was the credits, so I could finally switch off. I can't imagine ever paying money to watch Tenenbaums because I'd be so mad at being sucked in by the hype once again.

Of course this is just my opinion. If you enjoy these films I'm truly happy for you. I love tons of things that other people hate and that's just the way the world works.

What does it take to be mainstream?
At the video store i worked at a lot people rented it but very few liked it. It was funny because i talked to 10 people who did like it and 8/10 were film majors(well one wasn't a film major but taught a class at U of L on history of film). I just thought that it was a funny coincidence.
So it may have got a mainstream buzz but it seems most of the mainstream didn't like it.

The mainstream hated it. They went to see it for the stars, and were disapointed. But I could have told you that before I ever saw the movie. The film doesn't play to comfortable ideas or middle of the road tastes. It is a roller coaster ride of sweetness and sickness. Most audiences like to be lulled, not challenged.

The fact there are a lot of negative reviews on imdb speeks volumes. Imagine what the people who don't know how to use a computer think of it.

I'd rate Wes Anderson's work from Best to Worst

1. Bottle Rocket
2. Royal Tenenbaums
3. Rushmore

I'm kinda surprised how many people I know that have seen the Royal Tenenbaums, we have inside joke at work where we always call this guy Pagoda. I don't think he gets it but we do.

from a purely subjective standpoint, i have really enjoyed all three of wes anderson's films.

in terms of his use of filmic devices, i haven't been overly impressed yet. his films have great writing, excellent and original set design (particularly RT), and are generally cast spot-on. but in terms of editing, use of the camera, etc, he is passable, but not brilliant. his strengths, however, more than make up for his medioctrity in those areas, and have allowed him to deliver engaging and unique films, in my opinion.

p.s. i am a recent college grad, who was a "frat boy" nearly all of my college education. the issue has already been stamped out, but the fratboy comments are unwarranted. even us frat boys have valid opinions and insight every once in awhile.

All 3 of Anderson's movies are in my top five ever (the other 2 being Big Lebowski & Vanilla Sky). I completely understand why some people don't appreciate his work, so I never feel obligated to defend him/myself. I'm just glad I'm in the group that is able to enjoy it, since I think his work is genious.
