AOTC cropped on an IMAX screen will be no bigger than seeing it OAR at the Chinese Theater, so I don't really have any desire to see this.

Please.

The reason this is coming out in IMAX is to squeeze more $$$$ out of SW fans.

I STILL don't see why watching an edited down, cropped movie is so exciting just because it is on a big screen. Especially when they want to charge you IMAX prices for it. Imean, you are all going to watch the DVD 1300 times in the next month anyway.
It is Ridiculous to say that watching a movie on an IMAX screen is just "watching it on a bigger screen" this is IMAX we are talking about. if your watching just the regular print on an IMAX screen, then it would just suck beans. So it's pointless to compare IMAX with just being a Big screen

PLEASE.

the reason it's coming out is simply to get some last cash before tape hits and frankly I don't mind. it's my money, I can burn it for all you should care.

You don't see why watching an edited cropped movie is so exciting just because it's on the big screen even though the dvd comes out soon? Well frankly, I, nor does anyone else in the world really Care if you see the point or not. Just like I don't see the point in many things other do. I might not understand it, but hey, it's there life. let them do what they want to do.

and if you compare watching this movie on a standard home television to watching it on a big screen (have it be IMAX or regular) it is a HUGE difference

The Imax cut is more like buying a sculpture and truncating off its head so it fits in the room you want it in.

Come on! What does this have to do with movie editing???
Have you not been reading the post? it will be edited. scenes will be cut out of the movie. that is a movie edit.

When the 35mm prints didn't look all that hot, how will the 70mm/15perf prints look? What they need to invent is a digital projection system that can project at IMAX size and intensity.

I wasn't cutting anyone down for paying to see this edited, cropped version. If you want to go, please do, and enjoy it. I simply said I DIDN'T GET IT. Calm down and go see your movie. I am sure that I see many movies that you wouldn't get or have any interest in. So what? That doesn't mean either of us are stupid, it just means we have different tastes.

Remember, this a discussion forum. We aren't all going to agree all the time. Getting upset when someone doesn't agree with you is childish. Listening to another opinion, even one you don't agree with, can be enlightening and interesting.

I'll pass. I'm not paying my hard earned money to see Episode II in a butchered non-OAR format, with 20 minutes or so cut out. I'll just wait until Nov. 12.

Crap, I just remembered that what used to be an IMAX is now a 'Giant Screen' and instead of driving 10 minutes to Ontario, I am going to have to drive 45 minutes to an hour to Universal City. Crap! I don't know how I feel about it being cut, I guess I'll have to wait to see, but I am excited to be able to see this on the big screen again.

Hey guys...

just came back from the 7:30 screening.

Want the short version??

Rent the full screen version...turn the bass up REAL high...and sit real close to the screen. Plus fast forward a couple of parts that you find boring. Welcome.

You've just experienced AOTC in IMAX.

As someone who is a HUGE star wars fan and saw AOTC 5 times this summer (4 of which were digital, the first being a regular film print...it was a sneak preview), this was kinda a waste to me. I was REALLY excited before the movie started...and then the previews started, and it went downhill from there. I was hoping MAYBE it'd be in it's OAR but nope...full screen.

Some of the scenes cut:

Original meeting with Palpatine right after assassination
Meeting Jar-Jar at the elevator
Small cuts right before Coruscant chase
Anakin levitating the orb and some dialogue in Amidala's chamber
Obi, Mace and Yoda discussing Anakin
Padme saying goodbye to her handmaiden
Library Scene
Padme and Anakin meeting with Queen on Naboo
The Meadow scene (entire thing)
Part of fireplace scene (quick and painless)
Boba turning Slave 1 to fire at Obi
Meeting Owen and Beru and Cliegg (right into story scene)
Part of meeting with Dooku and Obi
Any discussion after Obi's transmission and attack (Bail Organa)
Small cuts in factory scene
Credits are EXTREMELY short

That's all I can remember at the moment. There was a lot of important dialogue missing and Palpatine is barely in the movie now.

As far as the presentation...again...cannot get over watching this movie in Pan&Scan. Horrible. The bass was up WAYYYYY too high and the ending (Imperial March) was barely discernable under the heavy bass. The print was too dark and shadows made everything too dark. There was some pixelization/macroblocking in some scenes.

It was also VERY close to the actors faces. I was close to the back of the theater and it was just too big. You could see all of Hayden's make-up (tanning lotion anyone?) as well as Ian's.

Brings me to the picture quality. Full movies should NOT be in IMAX. There's too much going on. Too much fast motion. It's really made for slow pans and interesting "worlds" but not for a movie that you're supposed to listen to and experience. After a while it just gave me a headache. Alot of the fast scenes just became one big blur.

So that's that. I'm glad I went to say I experienced it...but not thrilled with what I saw.
But one things for sure...i can't WAIT for the DVD...to see it the way it SHOULD be seen.

Thanks for the review! I have one question: During the opening title crawl, are the words cropped off on the left and right, or did they find a way to accomodate them in the frame?

TheForce.Net has a complete (I assume) list of the cuts:

* The first scene with Amidala, Organa, Yoda et al in Palpy's office is gone.

* The portion where Jar Jar greets Obi and Anakin at the elevator up through the "awkward reintroduction" of Anakin to Padme was removed. The scene starts with Obi/Ani talking about how they're going to find the person responsible, etc.

* After Anakin makes kouhoun sushi and Obi leaps out the window, the end of the scene where Dorme' asks Padme if she's alright was trimmed off.

* A minor trim: the part where the assasin droid (to which Obi-Wan is clinging) tries to scrape Obi against the building was removed.

* The rest of the Coruscant chase remains intact, and WOW - it is simply breathtaking (if not a little dizzying on an 8-story screen)! This is a scene almost tailor-made for IMAX.

* In Padme's quarters, a minor trim of Anakin playing with the floating ball and (I think) the part where he says he's ready for the trials.

* The discussion between Obi-Wan, Mace and the floaty Yoda was removed.

* On the train, the tearful goodbye of Dorme was trimmed out of the rest of the scene (since I am a HUGE Dorme fan, I wasn't so happy about this).

* The library scene was completely removed.

* The very end of the arrival on Naboo (where they are walking down the long curved columned pathway was trimmed, as was the entire meeting with Queen Jamilla.

* When Anakin and Padme arrive at the Naboo Spa and Resort Island, there are quite a few minor trims - the part about "here, everything is soft and smooth" to the hand touch and back rub was clipped out.

* As far as the rest of the Naboo scenes go, the only ones that were left in were the dinner table scene (with some beautifully crafted digital pans to account for the reduced aspect ratios - it was 100% smooth and natural. At least we *think* that's what they did!) and a much abbreviated but significantly smoother fireplace scene. The "I'm haunted by the kiss you never should have given me" is one of the exorcised lines. No "sound of music", no picnic and no Shaak-riding.

* On Kamino, the portion of the scene where he heads back out to his ship to have R4 send a message back to Coruscant was trimmed out.

* Boba's firing of the Slave I cannons was trimmed out of the fight, but we didn't realize it after the scene was over!

* The Anakin "a sheet, a dream, a moan" - scene is gone. It goes straight to Anakin in his meditative "Vader-esque" pose on the balcony.

* On Tatooine, 3POs introduction of Anakin/Padme to Owen/Beru was cut (taking with it Beru's one and only line - sorry, Beru fans!)

* In the Confession scene, the beginning part in which Anakin comments about "the shifter broke. Life seems so much simpler when you're fixing things," was cut. NOTE: The ending of the Confession scene is the original ending (ie. without Padme's "...is to be human" line).

* Dooku's entrance into Obi-Wan's floating cell was trimmed off, as was the end portion about "it might be difficult to secure your release".

* The scene in Palpy's ofc where he manipulates Jar Jar to consider making the "emergency powers" motion in the Senate was removed completely.

* Yoda and Mace's conversation where Mace states that their abilities to use the Force are diminished was cut out.

* On Geonosis, there is portion of the scene after Ani/Padme exit the ship, and R2 wants to do the same. The part where C3PO and R2 argue, and 3PO says that he knows all about humans was trimmed off.

* The factory scene was shortened by numerous quick cuts and edits. A couple of the cuts we caught were the shots where C3PO hanging by his fingertips and the 1st "teaser" of molten metal where you see the cannister iris open and drop a load, only to find out that it wasn't Padme's container.

* The final battle, as far as we could tell, is completely intact and completely freakin' amazing now that you can actually see the battle going on in the background!

* A note: not a cut, but a switch: after Padme falls out of the transport and the trooper arrives to help her, it is the version where she grunts and just says "Uh-huh," when he asks her if she's alright.

The site is going to be publishing more reviews/reactions soon.

I'm definitely not going right away. I haven't seen the movie in a couple of months and I want it to be somewhat "fresh" for my DVD marathon on the 12th. But I'll probably check this out sometime in December, just for the novelty of it.

I thought it was pretty damn amazing. My only problem is that the image does not fill the entire IMAX screen. If they had moved the image up a bit it would have looked slightly letterboxed. Only a couple times the image looked a tad fuzzy, and the sonic blasts during the asteroid chase were not as loud as they were at the Uptown theatre earlier this year. As bboisvert pointed out it's great to finally see more of the background battles during the mass Jedi attack and the clone war at the end in spectacular detail. I noticed things for the first time even though I had seen this movie three times prior to this screening (DLP, 35mm, video).

They are definately not cropped and it's possible they reformatted it, but I couldn't tell. With such a large screen the end credits of the film did not roll up but were seen as still shots with hundreds of names credited.
