In fact the only thing holding it back from the greatness of Superman is the exact same complaint that hurt the first one: the score. Danny Elfman is no John Williams. The milk-toast, lackluster score that he phoned in left me cold. There was no power, there was no "Peter pulls back his shirt to reveal his costume" dramatic sting, there was no "Ok, time to get down to the business of some serious ASS KICKING" movements. It was servicable and functional - but that was about it.
Overall, I loved it. Doc Ock is a great character. Much better than the looney GG. The directon was much better than the first except for the completely out of place surgery scene. WTF was that about? That was borderline R material there. Very unlike the tone of the rest of the movie. I thought that could have been handled a whole lot better.
I thought at one point when Spidey was losing his web-slinging abilities I thought they would introduce the scientist side of Peter making different devices to make different types of webs. But alas, no. Apparently he was just depressed. While it makes sense, I think it was the wrong way to go.
Overall a very entertaining, solid film with great pacing, acting, and first rate action scenes with Doc Ock. Add in the comedic touches like the elevator, and romantic ending and you have yourself a four star film that is welcome on my DVD shelf anytime.
p.s. please no more GG for Spidey 3!

Anyway, I loved SM2. Great film.
However, I do have a bit of complaint towards Danny Elfman's score. There were times during the scene with Doc Ock before he becomes Doc Ock where the score was sounding A LOT like the score from Hellbound: Hellraiser II.
See Spider-Man 2, then watch Hellbound and you'll see what I mean.

Just saw it. Only 2 minor problems .
1) The loss of superpowers, sure its supposed to be pychological, but I didn't buy it (even his eyesight got better when he accepted his powers again)
2) Too much poor Peter stuff. It was good to a point but then it went too far. When he told Mary Jane he can't be with her after she knew (oh poor me), I just wanted to slap him, stop being so pathetic.
I loved absolutely everything else. 9/10
I hope Harry is the Hobgoblin in 3, I know he was Green Goblin 2 but I think it would just work better with a different costume and name. (besides I figured out the scene when he found his dad's lab 2 years ago.)

1. Sorry you didn't buy it but it made perfect sense. Plus, not having to wear glasses was one of the effects of his changed physiology. Once stress emotional stress was getting the best of him it was down hill...or should I say down building hit ground and bang head on car from there. Let us also not forget that Peter is still young so dealing with all this and staying sane must
take a lot out of him.
2. The "poor Peter" part of the moive is one of the reasons this movies is getting RAVE reviews from most people. Plus hasn't "being spider-man sucks because I have no life" ALWAYS been part of the Spider-man Legend? I'm no Marvel Comics fan but one thing they do well is making their heroes very "human" with all the trials and tribulations of real life.

In the comics, it was revealed that MJ always knew Peter was Spidey sometime around issue 243.
Harry found out in the mid 130's (he found the costume in Peter's room)

I'll stick to my guns about the super powers. You could stretch an argument about webshoters not working and maybee (just maybee) the wall crawling, but physical attributes such as strength and vision should not be able to be turned on and off.
As far as poor pathetic Peter, I did think it worked and was necessary for the plot (and yes it did follow the comics) but I just got to the point when I was like "Oh my God, enough is enough.
Still a great movie, and I thought it was a notch below the first movie. When I walked out of Spiderman I was completely blown away. I didn't have the same overwhelming response of 2 though I enjoyed it a lot. (although I did freak out over the Green Goblin stuff escecially the Willam Defoe cameo)

For me, the Christfigure Spiderman being passed backwards on the train, and the last exchange in the apartment with Mary Jane made the movie for me. It honestly took it from the realm of popcorn film into what I think should be a legit Oscar contender for best picture. And you'll never convince me that there is a better directing job than Raimi this year. He IS the franchise and for us long time fans, what a beautiful thing to see him get this ride on the mountain top.

As for the vision - there's been many a night of LONG hours in front of the computer, where late at night my vision just goes and I can't focus on a damn thing anymore. So while I havent been bitten by a spider and gotten my super-powers yet (DAMNIT), I can totaly see this happening to Peter.

We will agree to disagree though. I believe the powers are all connected so it makes sense for him to have the problems the way he did.

Oh yeah and in the scene where Peter saves the little kid from the fire and the two firemen are talking to him, I could have sworn that one of them was Antonio McDyess of the NY Knicks. But he's not listed on imdb. Instead, its some other guy.
Anyway, I liked the movie. I was never impressed with the first one. It was so-so but this one was great because of well . . everything. I agree with some other posters that after a while, it felt like half of NY knew what Spidey looked like. And I would like to see Sandman as the villian in one of the movies at some point.

Just saw the making of Spider-Man 2 on E!. Raimi was talking about Spider-Man 3 and the release date: May 4, 2008. Looks like it's gonna be a long wait.

Saw it today and really liked it... glad they made the identity reveal to MJ (thought for sure she would have been knocked out in the lab and not seen Peter), how many SM movies are left ? 2 ? 3 ? Can't drag this stuff out too much.
Really enjoy the dramatic aspects, some people want a full out action movie but to me that's how you end up with cheesy superhero movies that are all flash and no substance.
Seems others are curious about the landlords daughter too... does she play a role in the future or was she just a red herring for Peter's romantic affection ? She played the sweet infatuated girl pretty well for the short amount of time she had, wonder if there was any resolution to her.
Just a casual SM comic reader but the "Go get 'em tiger !" line was a 'Yeah !' moment

Yeah, aunt may discover peter's secret by accident. I think it was revealed in Amazing Spiderman #39/40 (?). You can buy the paperback in amazon, just look for J.M.Stracynski as the writer.

Anyone else find the close-ups of people screaming into the camera to just be so ridiculous? It felt like I was watching a 1950's horror movie. Maybe that was the point...to make an inside joke or something...but honestly, I don't want any jokes like that. I want the film to feel real, and everytime I saw the camera dolly into a woman's face who's screaming with horror into the camera, it just made me laugh. The Doc Oc scene in the ER could have been so incredible and suspenseful, but instead we see people screaming their heads off and silly stuff like the woman scratching her nails and making imprints on the floor while being dragged away.
It just felt overly dramatic and silly. Anyone else feel the same at all?

But that scene didn't bother me that much. I thought it could've been gorier, but that's it.
