Favorite Summer Blockbuster Thread! (All Time)
I know this summer has just begun and while "Spider-Man 2" is still fresh and might get a lot of votes, try to recess the anals of the mind and come up with YOUR favorite summer blockbuster of all time.
I did a search and I don't think this has been done in this way at least since last year, but just have fun and list the movie that during one summer struck that chord that you just thought remained as one of the most memorable summer flicks according to you!
Here's Just a Small List of Summer Movies Since 1975: (there are many others, so come up with yours as well)
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, or The Last Crusdae
2. Star Wars ..........................21. Ghost
3. E.T. ..................................22. Terminator 2 or 3
4. Jaws .................................23. Forrest Gump
5. Lawrence of Arabia...............24. The Lion King
6. Jurassic Park.......................25. Twister
7. Independence Day...............26. Men in Black
8. Top Gun ............................27. Saving Private Ryan
9. The Matrix 1 or 2 ................28. Armageddon
10. Do The Right Thing ............29. Star Wars: Phantom M..
11. X2: X-Men United .............30. Austin Powers:Spy Who Shagg
12. Back to the Future ............31. Shrek 1 or 2
13. Pirates of the Caribbean......32. The Mummy Returns
14. Independence Day.............33. Spider-Man 1 or 2
15. American Pie ....................34. Mission Impossible 2
16. The Empire Strikes Back .....35. Gladiator
17. Grease ............................36. Robin Hood: Price Thiev
18. Return of the Jedi .............37. Animal House
19. Ghostbusters
20. Batman
For me, I would have to say my memorable summer flick would be "Forrest Gump".
Saw it two different times with two different girls that summer and needless to say the movie would last.
With that i give you my 1,000th and wish for a very happy and safe 4th of July to everyone!

Thinking of my most memorable summer movie experiance. First off I was born in 1985 so I only experianced a handful of these movies in the summer they were released.
My most memorable experiance would have to be either MIB or Jurassic Park because I remember going with a lot of members with my family and absolutly loving both films.

It wasn't a blockbuster, but Moulin Rouge! was memorable a few years ago.
Why is Lawrence of Arabia on the list when it says "since 1975"? Was the restored version released in the summer?

For me it would have to be Star Wars. There hasn't been anything quite like that phenomenon before or since, in my experience. I saw SW a week or two after it opened and there were still lines to get in. I had read the Time magazine article about it and was intrigued. Saw it with a friend who was a grad student in astronomy at Caltech and while we had some criticisms of the movie, we thoroughly enjoyed it. She pointed out that the binary stars created by the double exposure of the sun were completely wrong astronomically, we both were puzzled by the famous "parsec" reference, among others, and what about the "sound in space"? (Mad magazine called their version "Star Roars", IIRC.) I had friends that saw the movie more than 20 times (that was in the days before videos; if you wanted to see a movie before it was chopped up with commercials for TV you had to do so in the theater.) Needless to say, they could quote the dialog from memory...and often did! I saw it six times, by far the most I have seen a movie in the theater.
Runners up for me would be the SW sequels and then Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Two blockbusters I never cared to see, then or since, were Jaws and ET. Just not my thing I guess, much as I liked some of Spielberg's other movies.

the summer blockbuster was in many ways what has ruined cinema. Each year people try to top each other or last years grosses and forget to actually make good product.
So my vote goes to the film that started it all: Jaws.
It was quality.

Jaws. The film that started the whole summer film craze, and still one of the greatest films ever made. I can't go through summer without watching this at least once.

Yes, more competition creates less quality. That's mostly due in part because hollywood is comprised mostly of people who really do care about the almighty dollar above everything else.
And to a degree that is fine. It's a business.
One film is a hit. Next week 5 movies like it go into production.
Odds are 4/5 of those films are going to be pretty bad.
I like summer films, but you help but notice the large fall the industry has taken into the quality department. With each passing year summers are getting worse and worse.
With box office "dissapointments" of quality summer released films like "The Terminal" You can't help but think It's only going to get even worse.
On the other hand you do have films like spider-man 2 that are actually good. It's a huge movie making big bucks. Perhaps that will inspire others to stop making bad comic book movies and get actual good directors to make a good film like it.
So, what are the big summer films left for this year?
King arthur -- the true story! ha!
I, robot-- me, no thanks.
The bourne supremacy - the atypical fun summer movie. Slight, yet enjoyable.
Catwoman ::::::yikes:::::
Thunderbirds ?
Collateral -- the return of the buddy movie!
Alien vs. predator-- expectations should be low.
The Manchurian candidate remake![EEK!](/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Anchorman looks very funny and it will most likely be a big hit.
We shall see...

If you ask me, not much has changed in the almost 30 years since Jaws was released, other than bigger budgets and better SFX. Even back then you had 5 or 6 terrible movies for every Jaws or Star Wars, just like you have 5 or 6 terrible movies for every Shrek 2 or Spiderman 2.
My point is that even back then Hollywood was turning out crapola, just like today, and this trend will continue for as long as there are motion pictures.
