I expected a bigger Friday for Cars. At least Saturday should be big.
I think word of mouth will give it legs since many seemed to have initial reservations due to the trailer and subject matter.

Just to compare opening day numbers:
Pixar
The Incredibles - $20,503,078 (Weekend Total: $70,467,623)
Finding Nemo - $20,208,056 (Weekend Total: $70,251,710)
Monsters, Inc. - $17,390,000 (Weekend Total: $62,577,067)
Other Recent Films
Ice Age: The Meltdown - $21,788,862 (Weekend Total: $68,033,544)
Over the Hedge - $10,769,117 (Weekend Total: $38,457,003)
Just a touch behind the last two Pixar releases. Will it follow a mutliplier similar to those, or is Ice Age 2's multiplier more inline with current box office trends? I'll guess $67 million for the weekend.

Be sure to take into effect that a lot of tickets sold for Cars are kids priced tickets which cost a few dollars less. I think that alone is the major limiting factor of a Pixar film breaking any records.

I think I get Clemente's logic. If there is an equal number of persons going to see X3 and Cars, the smart money would be on Cars having a smaller take because the children's tickets would be cheaper.
I'm not sure how this plays out in the long run, but I'm sure Pixar makes up for it w/ licensing b/c I'm sure not too many adults are running around w/ X3 bedsheets like kids will have a "Cars" backpack.
Hollywood should starting stating "tickets sold" b/c that would be a MUCH better indicator over time. (I know others have said that before, but I'm now on the side of absolute numbers instead of ticket sales.)

The lower-priced tickets are probably offset by the kids being accompanied by adults. Granted, a sold-out showing with all adults will take in more money than a sold-out show with some kids, but in the long run, the adults that go to the movie just to accompany their kids will make up for the lower kid-priced tickets.

Shrek 2 made $108,037,878 its first weekend. So it's possible for a movie like this to do really huge numbers. Or perhaps Shrek's overall audience age skews more adult on average than an average Pixar film, I don't know.

Yeah, that X-Men movie won't get anywhere near $200 million.

I doubt CARS will suffer much. It's a friday that really only factors in half of the day. Saturday's take in will be much bigger and it'll have some very nice legs as summer is kicking in gear.

It'll turn a profit. no doubt about that. Even if the advertisement budget was large. Through international and home video, it's a huge profit for fox. I'm just one that thinks it wasn't all that great quality wise. on a business standpoint on the other hand...

Good opening for Cars, but it didn't quite have a strong Saturday boost compared to some of the other Pixar films.
The most impressive thing I see about this weekend is Da Vinci Code's worldwide total now stands at $597 million and should pass over $600 mil once the overseas totals come in.
