Well, I think the main problem with this list is in defining exactly what is meant by "inspirational." One person's inspirational is often another's banal.

Looking over the list, I see several great films that I don't find to be especially inspiring, and a lot of mediocre films that are really just calculated crowd pleasers. I guess a big part of the criteria for this list were films that had a sentimental tone to them. Which in my opinion, isn't always inspiring, especially when you're talking about manipulative twaddle (like Forrest Gump, for just one example).

To Kill A Mockingbird at #2... vastly overrated once again. At least they got It's A Wonderful Life right, but after seeing Atticus Finch chosen #1 hero (?!?!?!) a year or so ago, I had my doubts going into the last 10 minutes of the show.

All of these lists have a real hard-on for Rocky, for some reason. Not to belabor the point, but it wasn't even the most inspirational film of its year.

that's funny because they even showed a snippet of it in the intro. (Superman carrying the American flag from II)
along, with "Patton" , "The Natural"...

That's why I thought Superman would definitely make the list. They showed the snippet, so it must have made it.

You know, come to think of it, The Wizard is kind of inspirational. Who doesn't cheer when Jimmy rises above Lucas?

Okay..no one's said it so I guess I will:

Where the h*ll is Jaws on this list? Its not as self-important as Amistad but who the hell didn't go crazy in the theatre when
Spoiler:
Brody pulls the trigger and blows the shark to smithereens?

And it is inspirational...a man overcoming his fears to save his family and community.

Boo, AFI! Boooooo!!

I definately agree that Return of the King should be up there. The part when Sam picks up Frodo is one of the most inspirational scenes in film. Let alone not even in the top 100.

when i saw pinocchio come up, i could only assume that the lion king wasn't far behind. wrong-o.

personally, the muppet movie would have shown up somewhere on that list. perhaps even hook

What exactly is inspirational about 2001?
2001 inspired generations of kids to seek out mind-expanding substances.

I actually was baffeled by that one as well.

What? No Poseidon Adventure ? I know it's kinda hokey but since I first saw it when I was 14, 34 years ago, I still wonder to myself if I would just follow the crowd like a zombie and drown in the ballroom, or have the guts to take a chance and climb that Christmas tree. I hope I'm never in a situation to find out but when I first saw it at 14 I hoped I would turn out to be a person that would have the guts to take chances and get somewhere.

Pretty good list. Normally, after a list like this comes out, I'll read a thread on it and go "oh yeah...that one should have been on." But thus far not many films have been mentioned that I agree should have made it. I would move a few of them around (and maybe pull 2001) but minor tweakings at best.

Nice job AFI!

Rudy should have been number one who doesnt get goosebumps and shed a tear when he sacks the QB.

Remember the Titans should have been in the list two who doesnt feel emotion when Julius and Gary hit each other and say this is right side, this is left side.
