Reese's Pieces is the one I think of the most. I can't stand the movie E.T. due to being forced to watch it when it came out but I sure do love the candy.
It's amazing what a fine live they have to walk for product placement to work in a film. I, Robot was certainly the biggest film in recent memory that fucked it up the worst. If the things rumored for the Transformers movie pans out then it might be the next big placement flop.

Two I remember being very prominent were in Back to the Future with Diet Pepsi and Nike actually being mentioned in parts II and III.
The Nesquik sign on Bacala's train set in this past year's Sopranos premiere was pretty bad.

From what I rememer "Finding Nemo" did two things. It slightly boosted Clown Fish sales but more tragically, there was news story about kids flushing their pet fish down the toilets to "free" them. But what kids don't understand is that those pipes leads to waste processing plants so those fish end up dead.

From what I've observed, the most consistently successful product placement is music. Oh, and I've always wanted one of those dehydrated Pizza Hut pizzas from Back to the Future, Part II.

Reese's Pieces sales were boosted 65% by ET! That was also the first product placement that came to mind.

I don't know about anyone else but I had an insane craving for Big Macs after watching Super Size Me. Seriously.
I always hated McDonalds and considered it the worst of all fast food (in regards to quality and taste), but since seeing Super Size Me last year I think I have stoped there for a Big Mac at least a dozen times.
EDIT TO ADD:
Vans shoes and Fast Times At Ridgemont High. I never saw a pair before in my life until after I watched Sean Penn hit himself in the head and say "That's my head, dude!" Then they were EVERYWHERE.

What about skateboard sales in Back to the Future? I'm not sure if you'd consider it a true "product placement" but I remember all the neighborhood kids trying to do the little kick/flip/grab thing Marty did to pick up the board.

I'm not sure about Pepsi being a product placement, If I recall correctly, the first thing Marty asked for was a Tab which is a CocaCola product. I think that PepsiFree was used because the name fits the gag better than DietCoke would of.
While some movies like Men in Black II are loaded with product placements, I'm not sure how much impact they had on sales of those brands. I do recall hearing that sales of Rayban sunglasses went through the roof after T2 came out.

I am not sure how much it has been affected so far...but judging by box office i would say that Pirates of the Caribbean is a whole movie based on advertising for Disneyland. I can imagine the lines for this ride have only gotten longer.

Toy Story sparked renued interest in nearly every classic toy featured. Unfortunately, toy manufacturers weren't ready for sudden increase in sales; slinky dog wasn't even being made when the film came out. Pixar made fun of the late response by manufacturers in Toy Story 2.
Josie and the Pussycats has probably the highest amount of product placement per screentime. I'm not sure if there's a second that goes by in the film without product placement. Of course, the producers were aiming for a satirical overload of product placement, which they achieved.

What about Ray-Bans and "Men in Black".
I remember my friend wanting a pair of MiB glasses only to be told they were $135.
"We also have payment plans."
Oh boy.

"I believe you have my stapler."
Swingline had to start producing this stapler due to the requests from Office Space viewers.
