Do you HAVE to text during the movie?!?!?!

Re: Do you HAVE to text during the movie?!?!?!
I'm pretty mad about my "Tree of Life" experience yesterday, considering how badly I wanted to see the movie.
Basically, if you're going to see a film like that, don't bring people who you KNOW won't appreciate it. Several people brought significant others who were bored throughout and resorted to texting, making snide "oh my God this is so boring" comments, etc. The person next to my friend kept checking his phone to look at the time.
Worst part of all was the good 4-5 minutes of someone's cellphone repeatedly ringing. When someone finally said "Turn your phone off!" someone decided to say "Who cares? It's not like anything's happening!"
This was at an Arclight, I wasn't just at an AMC or a large theater chain.

b) buy a fucking watch, but if you flip that phone on to check the time, I'll shove it so far up your ass - some bitch did that at least three times during the movie, and the guy next to me did that once - I thankfully restrained myself enacting bodily harm to them.

I wonder if she knows she's gone viral and that she's been made to look like a complete fool?

I haven't ever met her or discussed this with him in much depth yet. If it's the same girl he mentioned at dinner a few weeks ago, she is fresh out of rehab. And she must know she is a star now because, he confirmed it with her yesterday over the phone.
EDIT: ok not the one from rehab. And as far as her caring about the viral video . . . not so much.

These people obviously have no common sense if they think their phones aren't bothering anyone, even if they are looking at the time. Lights glow in the dark.

To me the movie going experience started falling apart about 15 years ago with the laser pointers. The popularity of cell phones completely ruined it.
On a funny side note... I was at St. Peter's Square a few years ago with the Pope celebrating mass, when the jackass in front of me answers his phone and proceeds to have a conversation. If people don't respect a church service of this magnitude, they're not going to respect Po the panda.

Re: Do you HAVE to text during the movie?!?!?!
Alamo Drafthouse is getting a crazy amount of press for this. There's a lot of good things about the Alamo like this policy, the pre-show vintage entertainment and their 4K projectors (as well as the great care they take in projecting an image and changing bulbs), and I do go there about once a month. But I am not always happy with the theater. If you criticize them a mafia of hipsters will shout you down. In fact, they asked for opinions about a screening on their FB page and I was honest with my particular experience. The commenters turned on me for daring to express a negative opinion of the Alamo. One of their employees then wrote a nasty status update about me using my name. I got free tickets and a gift card out of that.
The screens are really small. I got spoiled going to the Cinemarks in Plano I guess. The sound isn't very good when you compare it to larger theaters that have the same nice 4K projectors. The food tastes awful. Orders are consistently lost or wrong. As bad as texting and talking are in a theater, it's just as distracting (or even more so) to have a wait staff running around. You can't see the bill when you need to pay and just sort of blindly throw down a credit card. Sometimes the servers have a too cool for school attitude. And the parking lot on South Lamar sucks major ass. Small spaces and huge speed bumps and it fills up fast.

Re: Do you HAVE to text during the movie?!?!?!
It really is getting worse out there. I went to see X-Men:FC Sunday night, and the girl/woman in front of me did the double whammy. She bought her child who was no more than 4 or 5, who asked questions and yelled quite a bit, and then she was texting as well every couple minutes to her friend.
Why does she even bother going out? Or conversely, how rude is she to think her enjoyment is more important then everyone else's?
I don't know what to do to enjoy a quiet movie anymore other then watch in my own house. But I really like watching the blockbusters on the big screen. I wish there was something like the Drafthouse in NYC.

This is why i for the most part love going to midnight screenings, cause while you get fanboys of the highest order, they actually wanna see the movie, and are quiet and respectful (well except for big heroic moments)

That woman is total airhead. First, she said she didn't know that she wasn't supposed to text during the movie. Um....as best as I can remember, for the last ten years or so ever since cell phones got really popular, theaters always show a little skit or "commercial" before the movie starts saying Silence Is Golden or Turn Off Your Cell Phones or something like that. She's never seen one of the warnings ? Second, she sounds like she has never been to school. "magnited states of america" ?

I had a friend who suggested we go see Bridesmaids at Union Square at like 9PM on a Saturday... I quickly disabused him of that notion.
