If there’s one thing I’ve learned during this pandemic it’s that movie studios had gotten awful presumptuous about the crap they expect the movie going public to pay exorbitant prices for.

I’ll probably go see the Conjuring, but not the Jolie one.
I had every intention of going to see Kong. I made plans with a buddy of mine, but I ended up getting a covid shot that day. We agreed we would watch it at my house then go a week later to the theater. That was all well and good until 1/4 into the movie we both said this movie kinda sucks.
I wonder if this was somewhat calculated on WB’s part to dump these on HBO because they didn’t have much faith in the quality/performance of the films.

I don't think so. One of the earliest titles was Oscar Winner Judas and the Black Messiah.
And I am sure they have tons of faith in the Sopranos prequel

If this plays at my closest Dolby Cinema, I'll go. BR2049 was amazing in that format. (and I was literally the only person in the cinema )
But otherwise... I'll probably just wait for the 4K disc. We'll see...

I really want movie theaters to come back, so I will probably try to see this in the theater.

We would have have seen way less marketing if that was the case. You're projecting your thoughts on the films.

I think my views on the hbomax releases are fairly in line with the majority of people.

I think you not liking GvK is no reason to assume WB felt pessimistic about it.

Yeah, I've been long soured on the theater experience. The addition of liquor to some of them makes it slightly better, but having to sit through 30 minutes of trailers and ads before the movie is just too much. Not to mention the prices (tickets and snacks).

I would definitely have watched on HBOMax plus bought the 4k disc - that would have been my support of the movie.

Wonder Woman 1984 was pretty poorly reviewed and generally disliked. Myself included
Judas and The Black Messiah was very positively received. Unfortunately the true non COVID box office will never be known.
Mortal Kombat was underwhelming to say the least. Not just by me, but by reviewers and viewers in general.
I’ve yet to speak to someone who didn’t think GvK was average at best.
I’ve yet to see Those Who Wish Me Dead.
So it sounds like I’m not the only one who thinks WB didn’t exactly knock it out of the park with these films.

WB hasn't been a good roll in a while, this year is no different. I enjoyed MK and GvK for what they were. GvK did killer at the box office all things considered ($424m worldwide).

That said GvK and Dune are co-productions with Legendary.

I'm kind of torn on this one. I do believe the Dune needs a theatrical viewing and I intend to do so myself. However, as of right now the James Bond movie No Time to Die is scheduled to release exactly a week later and that will greatly cut into people's ability to see it on a large screen as Bond is such a surefire property it will be given every major screen and format by default upon release. I actually kind of wish they would release Dune in early November or just push it back a full year and go with a December release. Perhaps the HBOMax thing is to give people who couldn't see it in theaters a chance. Like it or not, COVID changed everything and theatrical windows for movies are probably going to stay limited for some time.

It’s not about not supporting theaters. It’s about not getting sick or dying. That’s all. Sure, I’m vaccinated, but so was Yankees staff, including Torres, who previously already had COVID pre-vax, who got it, so you never know. And I would never trust a stranger next to me to be vaccinated or not. And no way they revamped air systems so fuck that. I’m not risking. If it costs theaters my $30 or so bucks, so be it. I value life and family’s life more than a movie I’ll forget a week later.

So basically, you're saying that if COVID persists, you're willing to stay away from theaters for the rest of your life ? All signs point to it being something like flu that will stick around and just be something that needs a booster shot every year. I myself enjoy watching a movie at home, but I'm willing to make a trip or three as both me and my parents and close friends are all vaccinated.

Going back to topic, I am curious if this new model of limited theatrical windows will mean less big budget blockbusters being made? I'm curious as to how much this will need to make and be streamed in order for it to be considered enough of a success to get its sequel. Because it's a limited appeal property, it could be very well made and the best adaptation to date and still underperform.

Stay away from the theaters the rest of my life? Is that like, a challenge? One of those “stay a night in a haunted house for a million bucks” kind of challenge?

Cause I’ll fucking do that.

Now: drive-ins? If they can make those work, we might have something.

None of the theaters in my area deserve my support. They can close permanently for all I care.

What’s the attraction of drive-ins? You can’t do sound properly at those.

You've lived a sad lonely life if you've never had a date at a drive-in.

I used to love going to the drive-in theater, it was like an event for me. It was sad to see them disappear. Maybe now they'll make a reappearance. I seem to remember you could get the audio through your vehicles speakers by tuning into a certain FM radio frequency. I'd rather go to a drive-in than be packed like sardines in a theater full of wankers, especially now.

Yeah, modern drive-ins use a low power FM transmitter at the bottom of the FM spectrum. Just tune your car-radio.

If you have a car with a good sound system, it can be pretty cool.

Still just two channels. There’s a Jack in the Box across the street from the local drive in and I always listen to movies while going through it.

Unless the variants get crazy bad again by October then I'll probably be safe enough to go back to the theater at the end of October for this.

I really wish they had filmed the whole thing at once because I'm afraid it's not going to do well enough to justify filming the second half.

I wouldn't be able to take it if this loses out to JackAss 4
