Too bad the Chinese market wasn't around when Pluto Nash was released.

China is a worse barometer for mainstream big American stuff than the Americans. China doesn't have what we have here in an industry. They TRY to match it but they can't. It has nothing to do w/ quality. It's what they can be exposed to and have the resources for. We can make shit that the Chinese can't make... and it is shiny as fuck to them to the point where they just go for it cuz it's something they can't do.
Batman v Superman had a $55m opening there and topped out at under $100m.

We'll get a sequel next time out with some Chinese money invested into the sequel. That's the only way I see it happening.

For what it's worth, various Chinese companies actually already have a ton invested in Warcraft. Not including Legendary, that is now owned by a Chinese company.

Warcraft continues to kick butt in China, as it earned another $32.9 million in its third day of release. That’s a 32% drop from the $46m Thursday but still gives the film a new $124.2m three-day cume. It’s probably going to take a hit on Sunday since it’s a workday and thus will count as a “weekday” for the box office, but these are still insane numbers.
To wit, it’s going to top the $125.3 million total of Star Wars: The Force Awakens very early today. And it has already topped the likes of Iron Man 3, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and Pacific Rim. If it doesn’t cross the $150m mark today, it certainly tomorrow.

Earlier this year, Legendary was bought by Wanda, the huge Chinese conglomerate that bills itself as the country’s biggest private property developer. Along with hotels, resorts, and casinos, Wanda owns the the largest collection of movie theaters in the world, including a plurality of screens in China (and AMC theaters in the United States). Then, in May, it was announced that the Huayi Brothers, one of the bigger and more connected private film groups in China, had invested in Warcraft, and stood to take a major share of the profits. That followed an earlier investment in the film by Tencent, the Chinese social media giant, which bought a stake in Warcraft back in September.

This grossed $3.1m last night, lower than The Conjuring 2 ($3.4m), higher than Now You See Me 2 ($1.75m), and for comparables -- made less than World War Z ($3.6m - $66m FSS), and Pacific Rim ($3.6m -- $37.3m FSSS).

This is now looking to land at $31m for the weekend in the US. It was looking like low-$20m leading up to today.
It had a 78% positive, 56% definite recommend. Conjuring 2 had a 74% positive, 53% definite recommend per early polling.

Re: Warcraft (2016, D: Duncan Jones) S: Fimmel, Patton, Cooper, Foster
I enjoyed the action, effects and a few of the actors were having fun, thinking they were in an 80's fantasy throwback....but I barely understood the plot, I had no idea where a bunch of these portals were going, why people were mad at each other and chasing people away or why I should care. I was surprised that all of the sudden everyone was best friends and Paula Patton's character somehow was beloved by the humans and vice versa - literally out of nowhere... a lot of the emotional payoffs in the finale fell flat because the characters had zero depth. I had NO fucking idea what the FEL was and why it was something to be worried about, a lot of the people with that magic seemed like they were easily defeated. The dude who gave out the fel was badass though, loved that character design. Not an atrocity but either you had to know the game to comprehend a lot of the 'why' of this or it was gutted in editing....

The action sequences were great and CGI effects were stellar. That is all I got. Some of the acting was hideous. And that ending. What the fuck? All the build up for that? I get they left it open for potential sequel but sheesh. There was like no resolution.

Saw it tonight. Never played WoW and know next to nothing about the world and game. I actually quite enjoyed it. It definitely has its flaws and plot holes, but overall, it was fun, some pretty good action, and a solid fantasy film. Definitely not nearly as bad as I expected. I was dragged by my wife (who also knows nothing about WoW) and we both had a bit of a "John Carter" feeling afterwards; wondering why it got such bad reviews and what went wrong with the marketing...

Ended up seeing it after all and it's an incoherent mess. I don't know what half the stuff going on was about and certain spots that featured effects looked shitty while other effects looked breathtaking. The best effect was Paula Patton looking fine as a motherfucker. Not even green paint and tusks can make her look ugly. ![Hump](/images/smilies/hump.gif)
I give the film a 2.5 star.

I... actually kind of enjoyed this. I spent a lot of time playing WoW back in the day, and maybe it was just nostalgia, but I got a kick out of seeing some of this stuff.
I know we saw humans, dwarves, dranei, blood elves (?), and orcs. And a murloc. Did I miss any?

Looks like domestic ended up being closer to the original predictions were, which isn't too surprising since this would be front loaded. Disappointed, was hoping domestic would be a little stronger but it's still doing great internationally.
The full five-day China frame on Legendary/Universal’s Warcraft has come in at $156M (1.024B rmb). That sets a new Middle Kingdom opening weekend milestone, topping Avengers: Age Of Ultron and its 996M rmb start last year. Warcraft also set a speed record to 1B rmb — by a matter of hours. It hit the mark in 114 hours, outpacing Universal’s own Furious 7 which got there in 120. Legendary is distributing Warcraft in China via China Film Group and Huaxia. Elsewhere, this is a Universal release. In 51 Uni territories, the fantasy video game adaptation scored $29.8M for an international cume outside the PROC of $105.7M. The full offshore total is now $261.7M including China. Combined with the domestic opening this weekend the worldwide total is $286.1M.

Re: Warcraft (2016, D: Duncan Jones) S: Fimmel, Patton, Cooper, Foster
I saw this yesterday and despite my many issues with the film, ended up really liking it.
The action and effects were top notch - seriously, beyond my expectations. I thought the amount of CG would be distracting, but it wasn't, and aside from a few iffy shots here and there, it was as good as I've seen in a very long time.
And I was so happy to see people using magic on screen like they were in Warcraft. Bright, vibrant spells all over the place. It seems like using magic on film has become so stiff and stuffy and serious, but here it was shown off and used often. That alone made me happier than I would've expected.
Buuut...the story was kind of shit. Lots of stuff didn't make sense, although I didn't find the movie nearly as confusing as a lot of others seemed to. The editing was really weird and off putting to me, which didn't help.
And I thought nearly every human actor was poorly cast.
Finally, I would've given an arm to see a David Bowie cameo in this, somehow somewhere. -1 star for that missed opportunity alone.![Frown](/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Still, I'm hoping for a sequel.

Re: Warcraft (2016, D: Duncan Jones) S: Fimmel, Patton, Cooper, Foster
well...it wasn't terrible but my expectations were reeeealllly low, like, FF Spirits Within low.
i was actually more entertained by this than Xmen Apocalypse.
one thing that was annoying was all the heel/face turns (for lack of a better term) from the orcs. it was like, whoever's giving the next speech, that's who they're going to follow.
and future nominee for scenes that serve no purpose:
oh, and the Orcs looked amazing! the wolves, not so much. maybe just spoiled by the direwolves on Game of Thrones.
i do kinda look forward to a sequel as i wanna see the elves in action. their design looked cool.
