From what I’ve read it’s the same as the director’s edition that released in 2001 with Wise’s supervision. Sounds like the main changes were just enhancements to visual effects and the audio being remixed.

Haven't gotten around to watching it yet personally.

Back in the late 80's one of the local theaters had a one-day-only Star Trek marathon. They showed Star Trek I - II - III - IV. It was awesome! But watching four movies in a row was too much for me. When I left the theater, I was so nauseous I thought I was going to puke.

When I was a teenager in the 80's the local 2nd run theater did a similar thing. It was ST 1, 2, and 3 (then two years later, 2, 3 and 4). My brother and I went there after school and watched all three. I still remember an audio dropout in ST2 (Spock saying, "That is wise") because we watched that marathon 3 times in that week when they did 1, 2, & 3 (they showed that line-up for a full week). I still halfway expect the audio to drop out there when I watch the movie today.

So early Fall in 1984 was the last time I saw Star Trek The Motion Picture on the big screen. And it didn't look anywhere near as good as this will.

Why So Blu?

This is a Fathom event, AFAIK, none will be presented in Dolby Cinema/IMAX, so that kills the buzz for me. I watched it via P+ in 4K DV/Atmos and it was fucking awesome. Can't wait until the 4K disc is released in September.

Nice, I'm going to wait and see it in theaters. Already bought my ticket. I really wish there was an IMAX screen or even LieMAX screen that was showing it. Even if it was at an odd time of day. But oh well. It'll still be great to see in the theaters.

Yeah I know. On the one hand I like the idea of Fathom events to get different things in theaters besides just recent Hollywood releases but hate that they are so limited in terms of the scope of release, size of the screen, and participation of things like A list.

I'm really kicking myself for not catching some of classic movies like Raider and Empire when they were screening them during the early pandemic. But that was before the vaccine and I just didn't feel comfortable going to the theaters. I mean I can't be the only one that wants to experience some of the classics in theaters again can I be?

Just watched it on P+ for the first time, first time watching a classic Trek movie since I was a kid. (I think we watched part 4) This was definitely slow paced, but you get settled into it. (not too different from The Batman imo, it's just that kind of film) Honestly a lot of my enjoyment was comparing everyone to the new Trek movies... Karl Urban's Bones was so good, lol! I did really appreciate the atmosphere of the film, and you could tell they were really going for the grand scale of the big screen, while still keeping it about ideas, exploration, etc. Imagine if the Abrams movies embodied this concept.... I can certainly understand why old school Trek fans didn't appreciate the new films.

When I was in art school we had someone involved with the directors cut give a presentation on the new fx, and they showed the Vulcan footage.(this was before it was released) Not being a Trek fan I didn't have any appreciation for it, but I still recognized the shots 20+yrs later.

A part of me still wishes they had kept the sister planet in the sky from the theatrical cut.
If folks aren't aware, in the theatrical cut, when Spock is on Vulcan at the beginning there's a shot of the sky that shows some huge celestial bodies. The problem was that this contradicted a line from TOS where Spock plainly states "Vulcan has no moon". So, in the 20 some years between the movie's initial release and the 2001 director's version, all the novel authors retconned it to be Vulcan's sister planet T'Khut and it's moon.

Meh, still a really boring and lackluster story. And mostly every actor not in the main cast is absolutely terrible with deliveries like they are a 12 year old reading off of index cards giving a book report.

Although the transporter malfunction scene still sends shivers down my spine, and the scene where we first meet up with Bones again is fantastic.

I think it was Harlan Ellison who pointed out that some extra's line reading at the beginning of the movie (the one reading scanning V'Ger whilst talking to the actor who was originally cast to play Spock's replacement in Star Trek: Phase Two) was so poor, so cringey, so absolutely awful, that she must have been someone's wife or girlfriend or daughter who got thrown a line or two as a gimme.

Turns out, it was a producer's assistant.

I like the shot when Spock jettisons his thruster pack and it spins away as he prepares to contact V'Ger.

Star Trek: TMP is style over substance but the crew of the Enterprise made it to the big screen and we got an epic sequel a few years later.
