What is your favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie and why?

Rear Window would probably be my favorite, for the time being at least. Terrific suspense, one of the best movie sets ever constructed, the beautiful Grace Kelly and a fascinating look at the social norms of the period regarding the sexes, as well as an interesting look at the nature of voyeurism.

Notorious Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman in two great but subtle performances. One of the strongest and most believable love stories in a Hitchcock film but still suspenseful and tense until the low key but satisfying ending. Also a sympathetic villain and a some memorable classic shots (the crane zoom to the key in the hand, and the dwindling champagne bottles at the party to name a couple).

Rear Window's a great movie and all, but I'm gonna have to go against the grain and say Vertigo, not only my favourite Hitch, but also my favourite movie of all time.

Psycho is pure style. Entertaining and suspenseful. Overrated? How? Because it's Hitch's most recognizable work, or because it's an excellent B-movie?

Care to expand? I think the shower scene is excellent and still very effective. I can't even imagine how the shower scene played in 1960s, but I imagine even better than today. So...?

I admit it's been copied so many times it's diluted the effect, but it's still a wonderful film.

Without Anthony Perkins playing Norman Bates, I probably wouldn't rate Psycho at the very top. But his performance was so chilling in my opinion. And I'm not just complimenting him b/c I used to have a crush on him. I just think that, although Hitchcock may have cared a lot about which hot blonde he was going to get for each film, getting Tony as Norman Bates was really an excellent bit of casting. He's charming and vulnerable but also tortured and, well, a killer. I like Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant, but none of their roles in Hitchcock films made as lasting of an impression on me. Stewart was great as Scottie Ferguson, but overall Psycho is still my favorite.

I saw it for the first time at such an early age that I had no idea how ingrained in the pop culture it was (the score, the shower scene, the house, etc.) I just knew I loved it, so the fact that it's Hitch's most recognizable work wasn't even something I knew at the time. And I don't think it's overrated at all. It's a great film and I'm happy when it's praised. There are tons of overhyped shitfests that I pay money to see these days (The Village) and then regret it. I don't throw around the term "classic" for every old film, but I think many of Hitchcock's films really do deserve the title.

It's funny how it seems like some actors are perfect to play certain characters, and some are just all wrong and can ruin a movie. Can you imagine either Grant or Stewart in the Bates role? Cary Grant as Norman Bates would have been about as ridiculous as Vince Vaughn in the role. He's just too manly and just didn't seem all that believable to me playing such an awkward mama's boy. I actually gave the remake a chance, even though it was completely unnecessary and a waste of film IMO. But I thought Vince was seriously miscast, even though he lost weight and looked like he hadn't slept in a few years. I still think someone like Jim Caviezel or Jeremy Davies would have worked much better.

I wonder if your opinion of the film would be different if you had seen it for the first time without all the anticipation for the scene. I think people set their expectations way too high when they watch a movie after hearing too much about one specific part, and they judge the whole film on the fact that the hyped scene wasn't as amazing as they had been expecting.

Vertigo and I can't really put into words all the reasons why. The camera work, the story, the acting, the music, and all the Hitch touches.
